The private lesson experience is unique in that it allows for more “customized” instruction that group lessons or rehearsals alone are not able to give. The instructor and student work one on one as a “team” toward the ultimate goal: a better understanding of their instrument, and a higher level of musical development.
In every lesson, we will work to improve technique, tone production, and listening/music reading skills, among other things. I will assign exercises and/or pieces each week that are meant to challenge, not overwhelm! Sometimes I will assign an exercise that is expressly meant for a particular area in which the student may not be the strongest, in an effort to develop that area. Learning an instrument is a skill that takes time to develop, and it is within the journey where most valuable learning takes place!

Amanda is a professional Pittsburgh-area flutist and private teacher. She has served as principal flutist with the Pittsburgh Philharmonic as well as second flute/piccolo with the Undercroft Opera. She has also served as a substitute flutist for the Edgewood, Westmoreland and Johnstown Symphonies. Amanda also performs with the Dolce Appassionato Trio, a chamber ensemble comprised of flute, cello, and piano. She is active as a soloist, performing in a variety of venues throughout the Pittsburgh region.
An ardent advocate of early music and historical performance, Amanda also plays the baroque flute. She has performed in masterclasses for internationally known baroque flutists Kim Pineda, Janet See, and Barthold Kuijken.

The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. I have been taking private flute lessons for over 14 years and have experienced many different teaching styles and philosophies. I began teaching my own private lessons six years ago, and since then I have learned a lot about helping students progress quickly and efficiently.
Each in person lesson will begin with a duet so that I can evaluate the student's progress since their last lesson. Every online lesson will begin with a warm up. We will proceed to discuss their practicing and what the student believes is working for them and what they are struggling with. I have studied flute under Christina Smith and Carl Hall both of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Robert Willoughby. I have performed in numerous master classes as well as been a member of the National Wind Symphony in New York City. I earned merit scholarships from both the Longy School of Music and Kennesaw State University. I am a member of Phi Kappa Phi, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key International Honor Society and Pi Kappa Lambda Honorary Music Society. Hi! I have a Bachelors in Music Education and have taught lessons for many years. I have 3 children and decided to give up regular teaching to be with them. I have taught at over 10 different Marching programs. I marched Drum and Bugle Corp. I have played brass a lot because of it. I can bring an eclectic education to teaching flute my primary instrument, but I can also teach many other instruments. The main problem I have noticed with beginner flute players is the in ability to focus their air in the most efficient way to produce a rich tone. I believe tone is the most important area of study with any instrument. It doesn’t matter what you can play if it doesn’t sound good. I can help with music you are having trouble with and also with fun music! The term is to “play” your instrument, isn’t it!

Hello! I started my love of music at a young age with my family playing and singing at family functions. That turned into a wanting to learn how to play the flute and I went up through high school with that instrument. After high school I branched out more into vocal performance. After that I joined a traveling performance group. No not the circus! I joined Drum and Bugle Corp. They taught be how to play the Baritone and I marched a straight Baritone. I then learned the Mellophone and marched that after. Since I had experience with Drum Corp Marching I taught over 10 different marching programs over many different years. I graduated from College with my Bachelors in Music Education and was a music director until I had my children and decided to give up regular teaching. After all of the years I spent honing my craft I decided t
o continue giving lessons. I have the most experience with Flute, but can teach many other instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone/euphonium, piano.
