I access singing and speaking through movement and resonance. We discover the way your body moves freely, opening up the breath and getting it to flow freely. Then we discover how to access your resonance with that freely flowing breath. Singing and speaking comes easily from there. Lessons with me are a combination of yoga class, anatomy lesson, and actually making sound. I find that if we see our voices as another part of the body that we're training, we see that singing is a movement technique, and looking at it that way actually gives us the freedom to make art with it.

About Gwendolyn

I'm an opera singer with seven years of stage experience in Germany and the US, including top houses like the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Komische Oper Berlin, Konzerthaus Berlin, and, since moving to the Bay Area, I have worked with Opera San Jose and Lamplighter's Theater. I have a MA in singing fr

Gwendolyn is my first vocal coach. She is helping me to access the power and confidence in my speaking and singing voice. Using full body movement and vocal exercises she opened up a world of singing for me that I never knew before. She has helped me to discover my body as an instrument (crazy right?!). Gwendolyn has a tremendous amount of knowledge on the mechanics of the body, the way sound is made in our bodies and of course music! I am more powerful and confident in my voice than I have ever been. Gwendolyn is amazing!!
Monika
Working with Gwendolyn brought forth several break throughs even after just one session. She intuitively guided me into alignment, and with such efficacy & ease, my connection to body and breath continues to deepen now, months later. The work I've done on my own or with other teachers came to a (an aligned, you could say) clarity while working with this gifted teacher - definitely recommend!

Gwendolyn is the best! I loved her yogalign class. She’s so warm and open and made me feel really comfortable just being myself and trying new things.

Hello! I began studying piano when I was 4 through the Suzuki method and started teaching when I moved to San Francisco to start school. I am dedicated to the Suzuki method and believe in it; in case you're unfamiliar with the Suzuki method, it's a way of approaching music that focuses on fundamentals, developing the ear, and learning through emulation rather than solely on reading and theory. As someone who was taught by a more traditional teacher who was a strict adherent to the Suzuki method timeline, I have found myself to be much more flexible teacher who really wants to structure the lessons around the student to maximize an enjoyable relationship with the piano and music. For adults, of course, we start looking at reading pretty much from the beginning whereas for children, we steer clear of reading for a bit. I have a dog and two cats who are super friendly and who love to sit and listen to the piano lessons (I have had a few students who are scared) - just FYI! Looking ...

With my 15 years of experience and a Bachelor's and Master's degree in flute performance, you can expect lessons from me to be the highest quality. I have years of experience teaching dozens of flutists of all ages, and I make sure to adjust my teaching to the needs of each student. Everybody is different, and I want to make sure students get the most out of their experience! Young beginners will begin in methods such as Patricia George's "Flute 101" series or Kathleen Blocki's flute method series, while intermediate and advanced players will have a more comprehensive approach with studies in tone development, technique enhancement, etudes, and solo repertoire.

In the few months that I've had flute lessons with Drew, I've grown so much. As a beginner in flute, I was completely scared and overwhelmed with taking band for the first time. Knowing I needed lessons, I'm so glad that I was paired with Drew. On my first lesson, Drew asked me what my goals were and I told him that it was to just simply read the notes on the page. That's all I expected to learn from him, but he taught me so much more! Drew taught me about musical expression, tone and all the little details behind flute playing. His teachings challenged and motivated me. My peers and band teacher have noticed my improvement and progress. Thanks to Drew, I can now play with confidence and poise. -Emma

For the last few years, I have been teaching at schools in the Boston area, as well managing my own private vocal studio. In my lessons, I place an emphasis on teaching healthy vocal technique through contemporary music. Where as many voice instructors rely heavily on Italian art song (which is in my play book), I find jazz standards and well-curated pop and musical theatre to be a more modern and approachable genre for students to explore their own voices. My curriculums have been based much in my student’s interests and tastes, and I shape each individual student’s experience around them. These include: world music, RnB and musical theatre. For example, one of my past students was very interested in Whitney Houston and the “diva” sound, but was having trouble being that they were a tenor. For their development, we focused mainly on healthy belting placements, as well as working through their “break” and connecting their belt to their falsetto.

My teaching philosophy is very much ...

Interested in opera singing? You may run into the word "coloratura" in your studies. A fancy word for a very fancy vocal device. Coloratura is ornamentation done in classical singing: think trills, big leaps, and intricate melismas (also known as vocal runs).
