I have taught flute lessons for the last twelve years. Whether you are just starting out or looking for a place in your high school wind ensemble, I can help you reach your goals and have a great time doing it!

Music lessons should be fun, encouraging and full of music that you love. They are an opportunity to learn something new, show your improvement, and receive correction, encouragement and praise. Students and instructors should play together frequently throughout and the time should be balanced with theory, technique and exercises, sight-reading, and performance and seasoned with introductions to a variety of music and styles. I like to encourage students to play because they love to play and to find the music that is an integral part of their soul, then to share that with others through performance. Jonathan is Artist-in-Residence at American University in Washington, DC and teaches flute at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA. He performs with the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra and other ensembles in the Washington DC area. Jonathan lives in Arlington with his wife, cellist Amy , and daughter Sarah.

He maintains an active teaching studio at his home. He has been principal flutist of the Mexico City Philharmonic, and has made recordings for NPR and the Discovery Channel. An active chamber musician and soloist, he has been featured at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC; as soloist with the New American Chamber orchestra, and at the Old Isleworth Festival in London, England.

He holds a MM from Juilliard where he was a scholarship student of Samuel Baron. He studied with Thomas Nyfenger on a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, and in Paris with Michel Debost.

I have been playing various woodwind instruments for almost my entire life. I focus on tone, intonation (staying in tune), and the confidence needed to be a strong melodic player.

I have over 14 years of experience in teaching flute and piano to students of all ages and levels. My goal as a flute teacher is to give each student a very well rounded and thorough understanding of the instrument. Lessons will be tailored to each student and will include the following: knowledge of instrument care/maintenance, tone production, technique (scales, etudes, etc), musicality, music theory, and a variety of repertoire from classical to pop.

I've been teaching flute for 20 years and my students have gone on to the State level Band Auditions and won multiple times. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to make a decent sound, play scales, arpeggios and simple tunes, and as time goes on you'll be able to play popular tunes solo and with accompaniment of piano or band. I specialize in classical, jazz and klezmer style, typically use best published books, and have the renovated, quiet and spacious studio, music stands, audio equipment. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!
