John M.

Rochester, NY

About John

John is an Organist, Harpsichordist, and Pianist just completed a Master's degree at the Eastman School of Music in the organ studio of William Porter. He graduated from Eastman with a Bachelor of Music in Organ and Historical Keyboards in 2011 as a student of David Higgs. At Eastman, he has also studied the pedal clavichord and piano technique with Ulrika Davidsson.

As an instructor, John firmly believes that private, one on one music instruction should be tailored to each individual student. His pedagogical approach is different for each student. Everyone learns differently. There is
just not one way to learn to play an instrument. At the first lesson there will be a discussion on the students goals and interests and different methods of teaching will be discussed with the student (and parents) to decide what the best step forward will be.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are different for each student. The way a lesson is conducted depends on many circumstances. Depending on the goals and age of the student, one can expect lessons to guide a student to achieve the goals which will be discussed in the first few lessons.

*** Studio Equipment ***

*** Travel Equipment ***

Music Theory Lessons or Tutoring: Staff Paper and Pencils

Highly recommended

I have known John for the last 7 years. He is an excellent musician, a brilliant organist, and a very thoughtful teacher. We have often played for each other and his comments and suggestions are always insightful. In addition to his musical gifts, John’s wonderful personality and sense of humor make him a great colleague and friend.

Rhonda F.

Rochester, NY

About Rhonda

I started taking piano lessons in the first grade from a teacher who graduated from Eastman School of Music. I later won a scholarship to Eastman School of Music as a classical pianist. I have been teaching for 40 years and have performed in Europe and won First Place Piano Competition in New York with 200 of the best pianists in the nation performing. I wanted to quit in the 5th grade but my mother told me I was to young to make that decision for myself and she would not hear of it!
Music is now like the air that I breathe. I cannot live without it! Thanks mom for being smarter than me. Play
ing the piano should be fun at any cost. I let students play many styles of music until they find the style that calls them.
For young children I recommend the parent sit in with the lesson so the parent can help with the practicing at home. They need the extra support when starting piano lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are and should be a fun experience. I teach bits and pieces of college theory to students so they can play the whole keyboard and not just in the middle. Its nice to get students young before they develops bad habits. Piano keys should be played with the fingers and not moving the wrists. Bad habits are hard to break. My children students play like a pro, even if it is only one piece.
Through me, kids learn to love music.
I start lessons at age 4 years old to 99. Please call today to book lessons!

"Learn a little but learn it well" ~Ben Franklin

*** Specialties ***
Traditional Classical and theory. I also get students ready for competitions and scholarships. I will teach any style that will ignite the flame in your child or an adult to love music!
I specialize in children.

Expect to have great lessons with your head spinning with tons of information after each lesson from this gifted teacher. Very enjoyable and rewarding experience to say the least. I never again found such a great teacher since taking with Rhonda. I was heartbroken when she moved.

*** Lesson Details ***
I always start with warm ups for both piano and voice students. I believe musicians are like delicate athletes, who use their fingers/vocal cords to make beautiful sound out of an instrument or a body. It is important to understand to warm up before practice/lesson for their own benefits to keep techniques fresh and healthy.

(For Piano students, scales, little warm up style finger exercises/for voice students, easy scales and vowel exercises, stretching registers)

Then, we tackle the fun stuff (more traditional practices) and after that, I encourage students to bring me or play/sing for me what they love. I love working something different with student who also has passion for different genres of music like light jazz, gospel, pop..etc. I value my students' opinion and encourage them to explore other things to develop themselves as unique, creative musicians.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Piano or Keyboard

*** Specialties ***
I start with traditional classic music training. Basic theories, ear training, aural skills with all of my students.

I believe Basic understanding of music is important to everyone.
I specialize mainly in classical, however I am open to anything students want to learn.

I just had my first lesson with Brett and he customized it according to my individual needs and circumstance. I am passionate about guitar and folk music but have no musical experience. Bretts plan is to start with the very basics and move forward from there. He was very patient with me and his directions were easy to follow. Though I am a senior I feel like I am 20 years old again and learning a new skill. Thanks Brett
