Fingers or a pick? Why did you you choose electric bass over the guitar? I’ll help you understand the role of a bass guitar and show you basic techniques to those catchy fills that have been remembered for decades.

Beginner level: technique and positioning is paramount. I prefer to use fingers over a pick to begin with but it is purely your choice. I will start from one position (left hand) and work with the right amount of finger strength (both hands), timing of notes, and coordination. A plethora of popular songs can be played in just one spot on the fret!

Next, I will incorporate some simple theory and show you how to move around the fretboard comfortably by shifting or sliding and really emphasize cooperation with the right hand. You want to make those notes shine and “mean it”. You are the band’s “anchor” and you Must listen to your bandmates (even if you are just jamming to your favorite songs).

My goal is to make you feel comfortable in your role and get the ...

Having worked with singers at all levels of development, I will introduce you to vocal technique structured for where you are right now. I coach in multiple genres: Jazz -- determining keys, understanding charts and leadsheets, Broadway -- belt, mix and legit, Blues, and for classical singers, multiple languages. I work extensively with actors on both speaking and singing voice and with voice-over and media voices.

As a stage director, I offer stage and performance etiquette, interpretation and how to prepare for auditions and recording sessions. If you are a community singer and just getting started, I love teaching the basics and will help you build the confidence you need!

It is a pleasure to provide a recommendation for Diane McNaron and her studio. My daughter has been taking private lessons for more than three years and we have been exceptionally pleased with the results. Ms. McNaron’s extensive background and experience in a wide variety of musical genres allows her to customize lessons around the student’s vocal strengths and interests rather than force a cookie cutter approach. Ms. McNaron has nurtured her talent in a positive, professional manner and I highly recommend her for those looking to improve, learn, or simply polish their current vocal skill set. You will not be disappointed.

"My son is the legacy of both a world-famous composer Grandfather and of a Great Uncle widely known as a musical genius.
Unfortunately the opportunity to nurture any of that genetic musical talent passed me by, but it absolutely lives within him.
Janis has been remarkably subtle at freeing the music within my son's heart.
This is not only a gift for me, and our family, but it's a lifetime of unending self-expression for him.
I cannot recommend Janis highly enough."

"Thanks for letting me provide a reference for Alex. I have taken alto sax lessons from him over the years, starting about 4-5 years ago. Alex is a great musician and teacher. Each lesson was consistently structured for: sound quality and listening, technical work and reading, duets, and improvisation. Rather than heavy music theory, he would instead provide routines to reinforce these concepts. He was always patient, and emphasized what I did well, with subtle redirection to correct problems. I definitely improved under his guidance and teaching.

The only reason I stopped seeing him was that my job became very demanding, and I could not devote enough time to practice and justify the time and cost of lessons. But even when I showed up unprepared, he was understanding and flexible to work with me.

If it would have been possible to have Alex come to me, I would have welcomed that."

"Austin Kessler is a great instructor. My son is 5 and is learning guitar. Although I wasn’t sure if he was at a good age to start Austin works with him very well. Zakai is comfortable with him and retains lots of information. He would rather practice with him than at home. He was shy at first but Austin allows him to be a child and ramble for a bit and then always reels him back into practicing and learning. He’s very patient and kind with my son. Constantly provides updates on progress after every lesson and makes himself available throughout the week via phone if needed. If we are unable to make it to practice he is accommodating as best as possible. I don’t live near the center so sometimes situations arise and he is quite understanding. I would definitely recommend Austin as a teach to anyone."

"Chelsea is a wonderful teacher. Playing a plastic recorder for a week in fourth grade music class is the extent of my musical experience and that was a LONG time ago. Chelsea is great at finding the right place for me to start learning and then laying out for me exactly what I need to work on in order to progress to the next stage of my learning process. I had been considering teaching myself how to play the violin via youtube videos but learned more in the span of one hour-long session with Chelsea than I could have learned in a week going that route. Chelsea was able to address the importance of things like posture and breathing to achieve the best possible sound, without that real time one-on-one instruction this would have been a nuance that I would not have ever picked up on. She is punctual, friendly, polite and patient. I highly recommend hiring her to teach you or your kids an instrument."
