The private lesson experience is unique in that it allows for more “customized” instruction that group lessons or rehearsals alone are not able to give. The instructor and student work one on one as a “team” toward the ultimate goal: a better understanding of their instrument, and a higher level of musical development.

In every lesson, we will work to improve technique, tone production, and listening/music reading skills, among other things. I will assign exercises and/or pieces each week that are meant to challenge, not overwhelm! Sometimes I will assign an exercise that is expressly meant for a particular area in which the student may not be the strongest, in an effort to develop that area. Learning an instrument is a skill that takes time to develop, and it is within the journey where most valuable learning takes place!

Beginner to advanced students who are at least 10 years old.

About Diane
My journey in music began when I was around 5 years old and first heard the children's choir sing in church. My mother used to tell me that I would beg her to let me sing in the choir but she would always have to tell me I wasn't old enough. As soon as I was old enough, she enrolled me in church choir and I've been in it ever since.

I have performed with the Rochester symphony orchestra and chorale, Rochester community band, Rochester civic music, church choirs and orchestras, Lake of the Isles community band, and performed Handel's Messiah at Carnegie hall in New York City. I've done some acting and singing in musicals as well.

As I got older, I discovered playing the clarinet was fun but never gave up singing. I just did them both. After becoming proficient on clarinet, I explored flute, oboe, saxophone, piano and last
ly, the celtic harp.

My philosophy on teaching is "you are never too old to experience the joy of making music on whatever instrument you choose and I will strive to help you discover your hidden musical talents".

During my 20+ years of teaching, I've had many students perform with local youth orchestras, receive superior ratings in high school music competitions, win concerto competitions, be excepted to perform with the Rochester Symphony Orchestra in their playing with the pros program and go on to college to major or minor in music.

*** Lesson Details ***
Music should be fun and not a chore so I like to really get to know my students and structure their lessons in a way so the student has fun but also feels like they have learned something new or plays or sings something better than they did when they arrived.

I expect a student to schedule time in his/her week to practice since my most successful students excel in their school bands and go on to perform with local youth orchestras and other ensembles. I will remind students that they will get back what they put into it.

Listed below is my expertise level on the instruments I feel comfortable teaching.

Flute: beginner to advanced (all ages)
Clarinet: beginner to advanced (all ages)
Oboe: beginner to intermediate (all ages)
Saxophone: beginner to advanced (all ages)
Piano: beginner only (children and adults)
Singing: beginner to advanced (all ages)
Celtic harp: beginner to intermediate (all ages)
Music theory: beginner to advanced (all ages)

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have music, piano, CD player, musical instruments and a music stand available at the studio.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I travel with my instruments and some music but not all. If there is a piece of music at my studio which the student is interested in looking at, I will make arrangements to bring it with me to your next lesson.

Students at home should have an instrument, a good music stand and a quiet area set aside for the lesson. Pets should be kept in an area other than where the lesson will be taught.

*** Specialties ***
Broadway, showtunes, pop, classical and jazz

My philosophy is to help the students focus on their mental and physical states while practicing and performing. If both their body and mind are relaxed when playing, they will accomplish more and be happier with their performance!

I have been taking private flute lessons for over 14 years and have experienced many different teaching styles and philosophies. I began teaching my own private lessons six years ago, and since then I have learned a lot about helping students progress quickly and efficiently.

Each in person lesson will begin with a duet so that I can evaluate the student's progress since their last lesson. Every online lesson will begin with a warm up. We will proceed to discuss their practicing and what the student believes is working for them and what they are struggling with. I can then address any issues or concerns that they have throughout the lesson.

Students will be asked to study technical and tonal exercises as well as repertoire. I will help the student ...

I highly recommend Sarah. She has excellent skills for any teacher - she's encouraging, knowledgeable and patient. I'm an adult who played piano years ago and always wanted to play the flute but I was frustrated, squeaky, out of breath, and out of tune. With a few weeks of lessons I'm further along than I was trying to teach myself over years.
I had years of serious music study with critical music teachers who made me embarrassed about mistakes and dread my lessons. With Sarah, the learning is fun and I now look forward to every lesson.
