I have taught all levels of flute.

About Katherine (Kay)

Taught 41 years as a band director
Principal Trumpet with Beloit/Janesville Symphony

I like to teach in a style that is functional and interesting. Students will be doing a variety of activities at each lesson. The focus will be determined by their needs.

As students become more proficient in music their enjoyment of musical activities will increase. The success of completing various levels of musical achievement will carry over to other lifetime skills.

*** Lesson Details ***
I will work with each student depending on their individual needs. We will strive to produce steady improvement in player proficiency.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student should have a music stand and instrument

*** Specialties ***
I like to teach based on the individual. I have taught group and private lessons. The materials I use are varied, with an emphas

is on scales, theory, and also some duet playing. I also like to incorporate some music history into each lesson. I feel that each student needs to work from known to the new areas. I often use supplementary materials (solos or small ensembles) to reinforce my teaching.

Kay is very knowledgeable, kind and accommodating. She is very encouraging and never makes me feel dumb when I hit a sour note. (As a beginning beginner, that happens a lot!) I am amazed at how much I have learned in such a short time!

Luther stays where I’m at and then helps me go the next step. That is useful for consistent gradual progress without the frustrations of moving either too slow or too fast (I am a beginning tenor saxophone player). Nice interpersonal style, patient and easy going, while methodical.

I think Luther is great. He works with my 10-year old son on piano, singing and even trumpet and violin as needed. My son has to work hard to progress, and Luther customizes the lesson plan for him and seems to understand him well. I'm really excited about them working together.

Private Flute Teacher

I love helping students succeed, and to feel a sense of accomplishment as well as having a good time while playing. I try to make every lesson something exciting to look forward to, leaving them wanting to practice before every lesson, whether it be learning a new piece, improvisations, singing, or any new activities. I consider myself as a guide, not someone that pushes or dictates students. It is my interest to create a positive, kind, genuine, fun, and creative atmosphere during a lesson.

About April

I have picked up and loved the flute for 16 years, and I wish to share this passion and creativity with students. I have had the opportunity to study under Emily McKay and Marco Granados, as well as perform in masterclasses with Trevor Wye, William Bennett, and Lorna Mcghee. As a recent Denver citizen, I wish to grow my roots as a teacher who fosters flute playing as a fun and outside-the-box activity.
I have started teaching private lessons since high school, and into my college and graduate school years. I have taken classes on pedagogy and teaching artistry in creative ways, such as teaching students to do improvisations and asking questions in order to get them engaged in the learning process. I have played classical, jazz, pop, and latin music, and can teach an array of different genres. I believe music contributes to a well-ro

unded individual, and will gladly accept students of all experiences and ages. My goal will to always keep the student engaged and having fun! It is important to play from the heart, and think of music as the spirit of sharing and collaboration.

Experienced flute teacher of 10 years. I have taught ages 5-70! All ages and levels are welcome to inquire. I provide customized lessons designed just for you, because there is not just one way to play the flute. I will always be encouraging as you learn, because music lessons should be fun! I am passionate about teaching flute and passing on what I have learned from my mentors over the years. Send me a message to inquire about lessons! I look forward to hearing from you.

About Jennifer

My Philosophy and Teaching Model:
Have you ever had a teacher that only explains things one way, and sometimes their way just doesn’t "click"? Have you sat at a desk and asked yourself, “How is this applicable to MY life?”

As your teacher, I never want you to feel like flute lessons are more about a standardized curriculum than the quality of your music education. I am here to help you in your quest to become a better musician.

So, my teaching method is simple (and all about you!). I will offer you lesson plans, assignments, and performance opportunities designed specifically for you. In other words, I customize everything we do to address your specific goals. After our first lesson together, I will create a curriculum just for you. I will work with you to reach your goals, and guide you toward new ones as you progress in your f

lute studies.

I understand how important private lessons are to your music education, so I am offering you an experience designed just for you, so you can become the musician you want to be.

My experience:
I started playing the flute when I was in fourth grade, and I began private lessons at 10 years old. I began participated in solo festivals and competitions around age 12. I played in my high school's marching band, concert band, pit orchestra, and symphony orchestra. I have played in three different flute choirs and a youth orchestra. I earned two performance degrees from the University of North Texas (Bachelor of Music) and Stony Brook University (Master of Music). I have performed with orchestras in the United States, Canada, and Europe. I have played in pit orchestras for musicals and operas. I have auditioned for professional orchestras, and I have maintained teaching studios in California, Texas, and New York.

I am so grateful to all my mentors who have inspired me throughout my career. My teachers include notable flutists Dr. Mary Karen Clardy, Dr. Elizabeth McNutt, Francine Ross Pancost, Dr. James Scott, Terri Sundberg, Jim Walker, and Carol Wincenc.

I have listened to Jennifer as she gave flute lessons to several young beginning students. I observed that she truly cares about her students and invests herself in their progress. She has a creative teaching style, always coming up with new ways to approach the challenges of each individual student. She spends time to discover the students’ goals and structures their lesson plans accordingly. Jennifer is also a good communicator with the parents of younger students, making sure they are informed and inviting them to observe lessons if they wish. I’m sure you’ll find her a delight to work with.

My daughter took lessons from Whitney for several years, and Whitney was an excellent fit for her as teacher. She provided the right balance of structure and flexibility that allowed my daughter to advance her skills and still have fun with non-Suzuki music as well. She is kind, patient, encouraging, and fun-loving. Highly recommend Whitney as a flute teacher.
