Beginning my studies on clarinet, I understand the challenges which the instrument presents. I continue to perform the clarinet in big band and in the pit orchestra for musicals. Beginner students will learn basic foundation skills (such as embouchure, air, posture, hand position, tonguing techniques, and reed maintenance) in a fun environment where the student's needs come first. Intermediate students can expect to learn more demanding techniques (such as double tonguing, circular breathing, whole tone and octatonic scales) and selections from the clarinet repertoire in an encouraging but challenging environment.

Kareem is a wonderful teacher. He is very present during the lessons and clearly brings a wealth of teaching and playing experience, along with a love of music, to the table. He has an easy manner with students - I really appreciate this as my daughter was hesitant to take private lessons but she is enjoying them very much. Thank you Kareem!

Kareem is superb. Under his tutelage I am certain I will advance quickly from my current skill set. I'm more convinced than ever that I can become a real musician. His assignments require the commitment that I am willing to invest. I hope I will live up to his expectations.

My granddaughter is 6 years old and this is her first professional piano teacher. Kareem is ensuring that she has the basics down before she continues. She enjoys the lessons, and is excited when lesson day comes.

My name is Josh Marcus. I'm a clarinet teacher and also teach flute, saxophone, and piano as well as jazz improvisation and other instruments such as bass and drums. I've been playing for about 25 years now! I'm well versed in any style you can imagine including jazz, classical, funk, blues, or anything else you can think of! I can also teach you how to improvise and play solos over chord changes or quickly come up with parts on the fly if you're playing in a band or are interested in writing. I learned clarinet as a saxophonist, so I feel like I have a great grasp on the experience someone has just starting out learning to play. I have some exercises and routines that can help to get you comfortable on the instrument and enjoying playing pretty quickly. I love playing flute and I would love to help you enjoy playing more too!

You can check out some examples of my playing at joshmarcusmusic.com, or feel free to message me for playing examples or with any questions you have. Even if ...

About Joshua

I have been playing music since I was a kid. I started out in church, then went on to play in school band and started gigging here and there. I just loved playing from the beginning and wanted to learn how to play improvised solos. There was just some magic in being able to make up what you play on

"Ryan Pereira was the first private teacher I had on the clarinet. With his help, I managed to get into my district band for the first time, scoring high in my audition, I have bought three of his products (a ligature and a barrels) which work brilliantly, and his expertise on performance and technical knowledge has helped me grow in a positive way. In addition to all of this, Pereira has become a true mentor and an honest friend."

"Bill is a very talented, professional, reliable and kind teacher. He has been working with my son for almost a year now and we can definitely see the difference. My son is always eager to practice and learn when Bill comes over for the lesson. Since starting working with Bill, my son has surpassed all the kids in his junior high school's band group. This is particularly important and extremely helpful for when he auditions for a scholarship at the catholic high school that we are considering."
