As a private instructor, I genuinely encourage efficient practice, solid technique and good tone quality, as well as an appreciation for music. I also incorporate the study of music theory and the study of music fundamentals in my lessons. I have experience teaching the genres of classical, jazz, modern, folk, and pop music and hope to extend the joy of learning music to my students as well as help them grow and gain confidence in order to bring on-going fulfillment to their musical experience.

It was an honor and a pleasure working with Gwen. Due to personal circumstances, I had to stop working with her, but I highly recommend her as an instructor. She's very knowledgeable, accommodating, and made me feel comfortable. You'll find yourself in good hands with her.

I work with the student to develop a curriculum based on their musical interests and my own teaching pedagogy. I strongly feel that for musicians to own their education, they must have a say in what they play. Assigning method books and mindless etudes to practice doesn't have nearly the same effect asking them "Ok, what kind of music do YOU like? What do you want to PLAY? What do you want to LEARN?".

I believe that students learn best when they are invested in a subject, and the best way to get them invested is to individually get to know each one, speak to them on their level, and get them playing music they're interested in.

About Jon

I'm a professional performer, educator, and recording artist. I received my Masters in Music from New Mexico State University, and my BA and BMA from the College of Wooster in Ohio. Students can expect to improve their technique and performing repertoire within a matter of weeks. We will collabo

Jon is helping me to relearn the clarinet after many (47!) years of not playing. I wish I had half the brain power I did back then. But he's very encouraging. My goal is to play with a concert band just a couple of months from now, so he's customizing my lessons to meet that goal. When I encounter challenges, he's very good at explaining ways to overcome those challenges. I really like working with Jon and feel lucky to have found such a good teacher.

"Kareem is a dedicated and diligent musician and teacher. He is able to share his love of music with students of all ages. Not only is he extremely capable of teaching students the technical aspects of music, but his lessons incorporate a wider perspective as well, such as, listening to different genres of music and asking his students to discuss what they hear. He is always positive and encourages students to do their best. He has style and class and it is a privilege that two of my children can study under his tutelage."

"Skilled in both jazz and classical saxophone, Ian has been a great source of information and encouragement for the whole eight years I've been playing sax. He is very aware of the differences between members of the saxophone family and has helped me feel comfortable switching between alto and tenor. His ability to analyze and critique what I used to consider minor details in my tone/embouchure/etc. has made a significant impact on how I practice. I've even been able to pick up some quick basics on clarinet while my horns were in the repair shop.

Ian also performs quite a bit around town. I don't often get a chance to see him play (outside of lessons. of course), but whenever I do, I have a great time seeing him apply the same skills that he teaches me."

"When my 11 year old son first began saxophone lessons with Michael Weiss, he was a true beginner but within 5 months, he was playing a song at a recital! Michael is patient and kind but firm in his direction and has instilled confidence in my son that he can play whatever songs he wants to play with focus and practice. Michael is flexible and adept at tailoring his lessons to the individual's needs. I highly recommend him."

"My son Nick, who is 11 years old, began his journey on the saxophone with Matt and he has had a great experience. In just a few short months, Nick has improved tremendously. Matt is very patient and has a great style, teaching Nick to read music, play scales, and learn fun tunes. He's also taught Nick the best way to learn a tune, focusing on the hard measures first and repeating them, then moving back to the tune as a whole. Nick has enjoyed the challenge!"

Choosing a Neck Strap | How to Play Saxophone Tips

Learning how to play saxophone starts with the right equipment--namely, a quality neck strap! Read on for some helpful advice from Brookings, SD teacher Carl S...    The saxophone is a unique instrument for many reasons. One example is that the saxophone is the only band instrument that uses a neck strap. Unfortunately, the neck strap is often the most overlooked aspect of playing the instrument. One of the first things that I stress to a new student is the importance of the neck str …
