I love working with brand new beginners all the way seasoned players who might be prepping for music college. I like to keep an fun atmosphere around the lesson and try to find out what drives my students.

We'll work through pieces from school and expand into topics such as improvisation, reading, music theory, and finding inspiration from great players. I have a jazz background, and love working with aspiring jazz musicians as well.

Thanks for letting me provide a reference for Alex. I have taken alto sax lessons from him over the years, starting about 4-5 years ago. Alex is a great musician and teacher. Each lesson was consistently structured for: sound quality and listening, technical work and reading, duets, and improvisation. Rather than heavy music theory, he would instead provide routines to reinforce these concepts. He was always patient, and emphasized what I did well, with subtle redirection to correct problems. I definitely improved under his guidance and teaching.

The only reason I stopped seeing him was that my job became very demanding, and I could not devote enough time to practice and justify the time and cost of lessons. But even when I showed up unprepared, he was understanding and flexible to work with me.

If it would have been possible to have Alex come to me, I would have welcomed that.

I encourage all my students to enjoy exploring the sound of the saxophone and to find their voice on the instrument. Lessons include everything from reading and basic stylistic concepts, to improvisation, playing along with recordings of your favorite players, and transcription. I am a graduate of the University of North Texas Jazz Studies program and have over 15 years of teaching experience.

I am also very diligent in teaching sound production, embouchure, and tone. I specialize in prepping saxophonists for high school and college auditions. Many of my high school students have participated in San Diego Honor Band and San Diego Youth Symphony and received top honors. I also offer full-service recording services and can help guide you through the college audition process.

Ian is a great teacher. Very encouraging, skilled and helpful. I learned a lot in an hour and I think I have already improved. Can’t wait to practice what he taught me. And looking forward to next week.

Ian is kind and supportive. He's making sure I get good habits and technique from the start.

I am a beginning Tenor Sax student and a senior citizen. I have played other instruments years ago, but never a woodwind instrument. Ian has been a marvelous instructor for me. Although I had never picked up a sax until December 2014, he already has taught me how to play several simple tunes and a number of scales. His patience and sensitivity to the appropriate pace is impecable. He also keeps me informed of other activities - concerts, recordings, community events to reinforce my interest. I would recommend Ian as a music teacher to anyone without reservation or hesitation.

Easy-going demeanor, very positive with his feedback yet still gets his point across when my son is not doing something correctly. He is teaching him not just how to play the music but also how to improve his style and structure of play. We picked a good one!"

"I wanted to learn how to play the sax – and here it is, given to me as a present. I started to look for a teacher and was put on to him. I reckon he is a good teacher. He clearly breaks down information, has a creative approach to studies, always puts something new on offer, and takes his students’ wishes on board. Undoubtedly, Nick is a fair musician notwithstanding his teaching spirit. If any acquaintance of mine sets their sights on playing the saxophone, I will certainly recommend him to them."
