My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Once or twice a year we'll also stage a larger event off site for more individual students and bands classes to perform.
Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Music Stands

*A P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console and Yamaha organ

*A MicroKorg Synthesizer

*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, Saxophone, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

I've been playing clarinet for 30 years and teaching for about 20.

For my beginning students I like the Essential Elements series as well as the Klose method.

About Lisa
I have been a music teacher and private lesson instructor for the past 20 years. I have a bachelor of science degree in Music Education and hold a teaching certificate for all-level Music Education. In my private studio I have taught students from 3-70 and have enjoyed them all! In addition to teaching music I also serve as the Music Minister for my church. Students coming to me can expect a tremendous amount of experience as well as a committed, honest and caring teacher.

*** Lesson Details ***
For beginning piano students at the pre-reading level (ages 3-6ish) I like to use the Faber "My First Piano Adventure" series. I love that this series enforces solid technique in a fun, child-friendly way.

For older beginners and players with some piano I like the Alfred series, supplemented, of course, with songs/styles of music that i
nterest the student.

Guitar: I've found that guitar method books are nearly as diverse as the guitarists that play them! That being said, I typically start with the Essential Elements for guitar for a solid introduction to music reading and a touch of theory.

Depending on the style of play the guitarist is interested in I move on from there. Mel Bays Classical method is always a solid choice as is the Christopher Parkening Guitar method. I also have a few tab oriented books and some rock/blues oriented books.

For clarinet and oboe students I like to compliment what their band/orchestra director is using when possible. I also love the Klose method for clarinet. The Rubank is also a tried and true book I use. I've had a lot of success with these books.

Of course the best method books are for naught without adequate practice time! When theory and technique work get too dry it's always fun to throw in some fun selections to compliment the "work."

Voice students are a bit different in that I don't use a specific method to instruct. I have many books that I draw from when teaching voice due to the unique nature of the individual. Depending on the style of music, from classical to jazz/pop, I have music that will teach proper breath support, vowel placement and tone.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio: converted dining room with 3 guitars, young percussion instruments, upright piano and f/w keyboard. Seating available for parents.
Music ministry at First Christian Church in Terrell. Access to choir room with upright piano. Seating available for parents.

*** Specialties ***
Degree in all-level music education with specialty in voice.

Lauren taught my son saxophone for 5 years, beginning with his very first lesson at age 9, and continuing throughout middle school. She was always very patient, reassuring, and encouraging. Lauren really helped to develop my son's love for music and playing the sax! She prepared him for middle school jazz band auditions, and helped with his jazz band music throughout those years. Lauren challenged him with new selections when his school band music became too easy, but always allowed him to work at a pace he found comfortable. Now in HS, he's very busy with all things band, so lesson time is limited for him, but we wouldn't hesitate to call Lauren again.

I'm an experienced music teacher of 9 years and I am available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of musical skills. I can teach all styles, but have a special love for jazz. I typically use the Rose books for etudes and the, Baerman for scales to build technique. I use Aebersold Play Alongs to learn tunes and work on improvisational skills for jazz players. I can help you pick out instruments, and I even have a clarinet a beginner could use to try it out and see if it is the correct instrument for you.

About Laurie
I have 10 years of teaching experience as a private teacher, a classroom music teacher, and a band director. I employ many different styles and methods while teaching, to ensure my students receive a well rounded music education, but also have fun. I love to use backing tracks, and I like to teach technique and important fundamentals through playing pieces of music in the styles my students love, while also introducing them to new styles and new pieces. I love music and what it does for the world, and I pass that love and passion on to my students. I am positive and encouraging, while still providing specific and structured feedback to students. I studied classical clarinet during my Bachelors of Music Education at the University of Illinois, taught as a high school band director, and went on to received a Master's in Music Education with
a jazz emphasis while playing jazz saxophone at Northwestern University. I have spent the last 4 years teaching at a British International School in China, and performing in orchestras, funk bands, and more around Beijing. This has given me the experience and knowledge base to teach students of all ages and backgrounds, as well as to teach many different instruments across a wide range of styles, including: clarinet, flute, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, beginning piano, and rock bands.

I played the sax through high school and then stopped playing until I retired ~ 4 years ago. I highly recommend Julian as a saxophone teacher. My son started playing saxophone and taking lessons with Julian three years ago, when my son was 9 years old. Julian is patient with my son and has built a good rapport with him. Julian has always encouraged him to try his best and to not be discouraged when he makes mistakes, and that has made my son comfortable with Julian and confident enough to push himself. Also, Julian is reliable and punctual, and is good at communicating through text and email.

About Jeremiah
I am excited to begin teaching lessons in music, Bible, and academics. I have the knowledge necessary to teach my students beginning and intermediate levels of music and Bible as well as offer help with academic needs.

I am a graduate of Baptist Bible College in Springfield, MO and have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Church Music and Bible. Whether my students want to develop an interest and love for music, Bible, and/or academics, I want to be an example, mentor, and friend and show them that learning is fun and has value. Within professional standards, I do not intend to convert students, however I would be glad to share my faith and knowledge to those who express interest in learning more.

Though I have limited experience in teaching, I have the knowledge and skills necessary to explain concepts. My future plans include becomin

Please consider me as your instructor so we can begin this learning journey together.

Are you looking to start out on the clarinet as a beginner? Or are you already an aspiring clarinet player looking to grow in your skills and reach that next level as a player? Whether you are just looking to get started or want to get that upper hand in band I can help you get there.

About Ariel
Hello there! My name is Ariel. I graduated from the University of Jamestown with a Bachelors in Music Education and Flute performance. I am primarily a flute family specialist: piccolo, flute, Alto and Bass flute are all in my wheelhouse. Through my years of schooling I have learned many other instruments and also am very skilled in voice, so I am qualified to teach most categories. I taught in the North Dakota Public School system in very small school districts for several years. My greatest strength while teaching was working one on one with each individual to get my students to a much higher level of playing and musicianship. I truly believe meeting each individual where they currently are and going from there is the best policy for growing as musician.

I also believe that in order to be the best teacher I can be I must continue to
grow as a musician as well. So, I too continue to work to improve my skills, and play with great ensembles to keep my skills sharp and ever growing. At the moment I play in 4 different community ensembles around the state of North Dakota and also participate annually in IMC's Adult Community Music Camp. Typically you will find me playing the flute and piccolo, but occasionally I pick up the Tenor Sax to play in Jazz combo, and when the season is right you will find me lugging around my Euphonium to play all of the Regional Tuba Christmas Events in North Dakota annually and from time to time I play in brass choirs. I truly believe the act of making music with an ensemble is a major key to success and fulfillment on your journey as a musician.

I graduated from McKinney Boyd HS in 2016. As such, I have a fresh perspective on what it takes to succeed as a student music- not only from the outside, but also from the inside. I have a formal college education in music performance, and have been very successful in my own musical endeavors. I made the all-state band twice during high school, and was selected as the winner for notable competitions both in McKinney and at SHSU. I have the knowledge and insight necessary to teach clarinet students of any level.

About Reid
Hello! I am a former music performance student of SHSU. I have played clarinet for 10 years, and piano for 8. After receiving a 2-year education at SHSU, I transferred to UTD in Richardson to pursue a pre-medical degree. During my time at SHSU, I earned top musical honors, including a victory in a concerto competition between all of the incoming musicians to the school of music. I additionally made the TMEA 6A all-state band two years in a row while in high school. As someone who has recently gone through studentship and emerged successfully, I believe I have fresh insight as to how your current student may do the same. Not only do I have the knowledge and insight to teach students of any level, but I also know exactly what habits and methods it takes. So much of my heart is rooted in music, and I would love to help your student begin and
enrich their musical journey. As an older brother to three younger sisters, I have always had an affinity for collaborating with the youth, be it as a brother or as a teacher. I hope to be in contact with you soon!
