Kimberly was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. After starting the flute and piano at the age of 8, she knew she had found something she loved and wanted in her life forever. At age 12, she added the saxophone and clarinet to her repertoire of instruments. After completing her Bachelors degree in Flute Performance at the University of Arizona she moved to Los Angeles to work on her Masters degree at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). There was where she fell in love with contemporary music and has devoted her life to sharing her love for it with others. After completing her Masters degree in Flute Performance at CalArts, she went on to pursue a Doctorate in Contemporary Flute Performance at the University of California, San Diego. Kimberly now resides in Los Angeles and plays with many groups throughout the city.

My name is Ruthie and I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in May of 2007 with a Bachelors of Music Education degree with an emphasis in voice. Through my collegiate experiences, I had the privilege of participating in a Concert Choir, Barbershop/A Capella Ensembles, Vocal Jazz Ensembles and Performance in Solo Voice. The jazz program at UNC is one of the finest in the United States, and to be selected as a member of one of the vocal jazz ensembles was an honor in itself. From these experiences I have gained knowledge about the importance of vocal performance and music advocacy. I accepted a position as a general music teacher in Colorado in the fall of 2007 and then worked part time for a school in Laguna Niguel, CA until June of 2012. I recently moved from California to Minnesota and am trying to get my music student cli
entele established. I love to sing all different styles and I'd love to help you find your style and help discover your passions.

My passion for music started for me as a young child. I grew up in a musically inclined family, and was inspired and motivated by family members to use my gifts and talents to educate students about the world of music. My immense love for children, coupled with my educational experiences and my passion for music qualify me as a fun and exciting teacher.

I am huge lover of Barbershop/Sweet Adeline music and I recently competed in the International Young Women in Harmony Quartet Contest in Nashville, TN. My quartet, Vogue, won the competition. The Young Women in Harmony contest is for girls 25 years old and younger. I recently sang with a quartet called, Dolce. We competed in two International Competitions in Denver and Hawaii and placed 10th and 15th in the world. I was also a member of the International Gold Medalist Chorus, Harborlites, which is comprised of 180 female singers.

My lessons will be educational and fun. I want to find your passions and interests and from there I will create lesson plans to enhance your learning experience in your specified concentration. Voice lessons will start with vocal warm ups and exercises and then we will proceed to work on vocal techniques and preferred repertoire. During the lessons we will create goals and work on those goals so you become a successful musician.

I am a very patient and caring teacher and I am able to create the lessons to your style and needs. Music is fun and I want to make it that way for you!

I am interested in teaching you what you need and want to learn so that you achieve your dreams. Please note that I only take serious students who will practice at least 30 minutes every day or 35 a day 6 days a week at home. I would like you to keep a log of how much you practice. This will enable you to make progress through the curriculum as you will be a beginner for the first 3.3 years, an intermediate for the next 3.3 years, and then an advanced student for 3.3 years. I will give you assignments to do over the week, and the next week we will go over them, learn something new and get new assignments. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert!

Dr. Maureen Spranza, is a great music teacher, my son is taking piano classes with her and I'm very grateful with her, because she always take the extra time to make sure my kid is learning, my kid loves Mrs. Maureen because she is a great teacher but also she is a great human being, she really cares about her students. And she not only plays the piano, she plays all the instruments, I hope to see my son become a great musician thanks to the dedication that Maureen puts in his classes, my kid loves his piano classes, every time after clases he came home very exited to practice what he learned and al of this if because Dr. Maureen encourage him to be better in Avery class

Dr. Spranza is one of the best piano teachers in the Bay Area. My two daughters take weekly lessons with her. She encourages them and empowers them to do their best. She teaches them both theory and practicals. They have participated in an informal recital and are now registered to take part in the MTAC Certificate of Merit program.

As parents, we see a big improvement in our daughters' piano playing skills. They even practice on their own, without us telling them to. All thanks to Dr. Spranza.

Dr. Carl S. will be teaching at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical replacement beginning August 2017. While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, assisting with the KU Jazz Festival, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen,Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr.,Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Carl's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Carl directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

​Dr. Carl is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl will be performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale.

Mike taught me everything I know about playing the jazz saxophone. He came to every lesson with great energy and always made me excited about the music with novel ideas for exercises and just the right balance of fun and rudiments. I am not a professional musician, and may never rely on the saxophone for income, but Mike has given me a very deep and permanent appreciation for the music. Thanks to Mike, jazz and the saxophone will always be parts of my life. I cannot recommend him enough as an educator.

I’ve made my living for nearly thirty years specializing in jazz of the 1920s and ’30s - the genres commonly referred to as “traditional jazz” (or “trad”) and swing. I’m the clarinet instructor at the New Orleans Trad Jazz Camp, the San Diego Adult Trad Jazz Camp, and the newly founded New York Hot Jazz Camp.

Super knowledgeable and really fun to practice with. I feel like I really learned the music I wanted to learn and not what "the teacher wanted to teach me"-- yet at the same time I learned way more about music and reading notes, something I always dreaded before, than I ever thought possible. He really has an incredible way of teaching you deeply about music through the songs and styles YOU love!! Thank you for such a memorable experience Matt!!!

Matt is an incredible musician and teacher. Not only have I had the privilege of watching him play live and witness how captivated the audience is by how he commands the saxophone, I've also taken piano lessons from Matt. He is a grounding force. His patience and ability to understand my learning desires makes me feel both safe and excited to continue to learn and play under his guidance. I highly recommend anyone desiring to try out the saxophone, clarinet, or piano for the first time, come back after not taking lessons for 10 years, or been playing for a lifetime but yearning to glean new wisdom, whether it be theory or style, that you take a lesson from Matt. Clarinet is my primary instrument of study at Penn State University. I am a member of the top band and orchestra, several chamber ensembles, and have been a member of the Penn State Marching Blue Band for the past two years. In lessons, students can expect to develop their skills as a musician for success in school or festival bands and orchestras. At the same time, they will grow as solo performers and expand their confidence and skill set.

Hello students and families! My name is Brooke C. and I am currently a sophomore studying Music Education at Penn State University (I am also pursuing a minor in Special Education). I graduated from Emmaus High School and teach and work in the area during the summer. I have been teaching private lessons for 6 years and have worked with students age 5-18. I have nothing but praise for Brooke as an instructor. My son was a 10-yr old novice when he began his piano lessons with Brooke. She was engaging and incredibly patient as he played his way through almost 3 years as her student, from the beginning stages of learning to read music to practicing scales to becoming recital-ready. Although he has since moved on to study viola, the foundation he received through Brooke's instruction set the stage for a life long appreciation of music. Brooke's impressive musical talent, in combination with her ability to share her knowledge and love of music through teaching, puts her in a unique position to address the musical needs of a continuum of students from beginner to expert. She not only instructs, she shares her joy - and she is, indeed, a rare gem!

I was Brooke's piano teacher for 11 years. Brooke rates in the top 5 students I have taught in the last 31 years. From the very start, she showed incredible talent & skill. She was born to do this. Brooke is classically trained & highly knowledgeable in all aspects of music & theory. She also is an excellent performer. I also play professionally & it is my view that the best instructors are those who apply their art. Her outgoing & pleasant upbeat personality make her an enjoyable & patient teacher.

Max Bessesen is a performer, teacher and composer based in Chicago, IL. His skills as a saxophonist and woodwind doubler have taken him across North America, Europe, South America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia and earned him awards from organizations including Downbeat Jazz Magazine, the US Embassy and the Frank Huntington Beebe Fund. The first jazz musician ever to receive a grant from the Beebe Fund, Max spent 2016 in Chennai, India researching the rigorous and systematic South Indian Classical system and applying this knowledge to the music of the African Diaspora.

Max has had the pleasure of preforming with such jazz icons as Ingrid Jensen, Ambrose Akinmusire, Dayna Stephens, Billy Drewes, Abraham Laboriel, and Allison Miller among others. In addition to his jazz work Max has recorded and performed with musicians from the pop and
world music realms including The Fray, Simone Shaheen, and Gonzalo Grau. Max currently holds degrees in Jazz Saxophone Performance and Law & Society from Oberlin where he studied with Gary Bartz, Eddie Henderson, and Billy Hart. He performs regularly with his working band Echoes.

I learned a great deal about playing alto sax from Max. He was serious about helping me grow my skill with the instrument, while making the learning enjoyable. One only needs to hear him play to realize what talent he possesses. He is very encouraging and motivated to help beginners, young and old, master the sax. Trained at the Oberlin Conservatory, with years of performance history, I felt that I was studying with one of best teachers, at such a reasonable rate.

I took lessons with Max in the summer of 2014 and 2015 and learning and hanging from Max has been one of the main reasons I decided to dedicate my life to working on music. He challenged me with life and music concepts that have been a big part of my life. Max was extremely committed to our lessons. For example, I would pick a transcription for both of us to learn and we would play it together and he would help me with certain rough spots, break it down and talk about the history. I've never had a teacher do that for me before. Max gave me essential information in a very open and informative way and was very down to earth and friendly in the way he taught. I flourish when the people I study with are open to work on what interests me and give me essential things to work on that I haven't been thinking about. If I wanted to work on Katy Perry songs, he would take me seriously and do whatever he could to help me play Katy Perry songs. Too often teachers assume I know things, but he was very thorough and made sure I had everything I needed. Max showed up on time to every lesson and was the type of teacher that was so invested in helping me that he wouldn't be looking at the clock every five minutes. My brother was on the ultimate frisbee team at my high school as a freshman when Max was a Senior. My brother told me that Max was a role model and inspired him to be on the ultimate frisbee team at his college. That makes two of us. Max was one of the key people in my high school years who inspired me to pursue my passion. Studying with Max has made me a deeper, more creative, and more down to earth person and musician.
