Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.
A woodwind player since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach intermediate and beginning saxophone lessons.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.
It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Maybe you want to sound like [insert piano player here]. Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.
I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.
Music lasts a lifetime. I know that’s a terrible cliché, but it’s true, and few other skills can claim that. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it, and like a snowball rolling down a hill, the longer you do it, the faster you get… or something like that. There’s a legitimate analogy in there somewhere.
Now get out there and make some music! But start by signing up for lessons. I can’t wait to get started!
“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.
Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. Step by step, we’ll work our way there.
We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!

I like to give students a good solid theoretical foundation first, then build to confirm with the students specific goals. For example, if the student is into a particular type of music (jazz, soul...) I tailor the lessons to meet those goals.

My saxophone chops are wide and varied, just like my clarinet palette. I have played alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones throughout my four years at Elizabethtown College. My experience with them comes from ensembles and pit orchestras. I have played reed books that include saxophone for three pits: Guys and Dolls, 42nd Street, and Company. I have participated in jazz bands for years.
I believe that I have a unique take on saxophone because this is an instrument I am proficient in that I had taken up solely for my own enjoyment. I would love to have the opportunity to share this with you and cultivate a lesson plan tailored just for you.
A majority of my classes have been in Music Therapy, and I plan to continue that journey at Marywood University. That being said, my background in education is different than that of some of my peers with a Bachelor's of Music in Music Education. I make sure to allow students to grow alongside the instrument and discover their passions their way. We will work together, cultivate a plan based on strengths and needs, and work towards a co-created overall goal together.

Jeff has been teaching and performing professionally for close to a decade. He enjoys teaching students of all ages and abilities, and specializes in woodwinds, jazz improvisation, and theory. Some of his past students have gone on to win prestigious soloist awards, achieve top seats in classical and jazz all-state festivals, and attend well respected universities for musical studies.
To address each individual student’s needs and goals by developing a targeted approach that utilizes appropriate resources and practice techniques.
In May of 2015, Jeff released, as a leader, his “auspicious debut” (Midwest Record), Perseverance. The album features all original compositions of a variety of styles and influences. Jeff has taken an approach in composition and arranging that “focuses on melody and sophisticated chord progressions to express himself” (Little Village Magazine).

Originally from northern Illinois, Jeff studied Biology as an undergraduate at the University of Illinois, undertook research at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, and spent several months studying in the Galapagos Islands. After a gap year serving in Americorps, he decided to follow his passion by returning to school to study music. He now works full-time in music as a performer and educator.
Jeff teaches students of all ages and abilities, and specializes in woodwinds, jazz improvisation, and theory. I am a performer, teacher, and woodwind specialist based in New York City. As a woodwind doubler I have been studying woodwind instruments for over 10 years and currently play flutes, oboes, clarinets, saxophones, and world flutes professionally. When I'm not performing in orchestras for musical theatre or giving solo recitals I love teaching.

Hello! I am a Atlanta-based professional saxophonist and have been teaching for 8 years. Lessons with beginners focus on establishing solid fundamentals with air support, embouchure, and saxophone technique. For more seasoned players, I emphasize advanced techniques, developing a personal sound, and exploring the saxophone repertoire. I have been a featured performer as part of SoundNOW, Atlanta’s premiere contemporary music festival. My recent projects include new commissioned works by composers Marc Mellits, Matthew Quayle, Royal Teague, and Coleman Rowlett, as well as recording projects for Kenneth Stewart and Stephen Wood.
I'm also dedicated music educator with a rich profile of educational experience. My passion for music education extended to a residency in Faenza, Italy through the Susquehanna University GO Program, where I observed Italian music instruction and researched ear training pedagogy. I have has appeared in masterclasses, clinics, and performance settings at public school districts throughout Georgia and Pennsylvania.
