In my 17 years playing the saxophone, I've performed in all sorts of places and styles - orchestras, jazz bands, chamber groups, rock concerts, musical pits, you name it! I've taught beginners, college students, and even retirees.

I've studied classical and jazz music at Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne, and Baldwin Wallace Universities with James Houlik, Mike Tomaro, and others. I have studied composition, music theory, and music history, too. After all, there's more to learning an instrument than just knowing which fingers to press down!

I can help you improve your skills and style whether you're just starting out on the sax or fine-tuning your college auditions!

About Daniel

Hi! My name's Dan, and I'm a saxophonist, flutist, clarinetist, teacher, and avid learner of pretty much everything! I just received my Advanced Music Studies Certificate from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, adding to my Master's in Music from Duquesne University (also in Pittsburgh), an

Dan is an incredible saxophone teacher and he helped me a lot. In the quartet, he helped me how to listen to the other group members’ parts and then I can really fit into the group. For my solo piece, he gave me a lot of helpful comments, which helped me make my music sound beautifully. What he does all the time is helping me be aware of everything, and growing to be more professional!

I truly enjoy teaching students of all levels and all ages, from the beginner elementary student, and beginner adult, to the more advanced students. I emphasize a students strengths', and go from there. I truly believe that everyone is capable of learning to play and enjoying an instrument. I believe that everyone that has a desire to learn an instrument is capable of that, and I work with my students individually to unlock that potential. I believe that success breeds success, and I look forward to working with you to be successful.
In my instruction in individual lessons, I focus on teaching practice methods, as well as music literacy, and sight-reading. I feel that this is very important, as it is the basis for developing a strong sense of confidence and musicianship that the student will be able to use in a variety of setting, if they play solo, in a band, or in a small group. My philosophy is student centered, meaning that the needs and goals of the individual student determine ...

I have had the pleasure of knowing Silvia as a professional colleague for 20 years. She is an experienced, educated and passionate music teacher, who has a well-developed ability to accommodate individual students' needs and learning styles. She is especially aware of what the beginning and intermediate woodwind player finds challenging, and I enthusiastically recommend her as a private instructor.

I have shared band duties with Sylvia at Barnum school. She is a caring teacher and a skilled musician. Her skills and knowledge of woodwind instruments are fantastic. As a twacher she inspires her students to work to the best of their abilities. It has been a joy to work together with her to further our Band program.

"I returned to saxophone after not playing for years, and at the recommendation of a local player took lessons with Mike. Mike's a great player, but more importantly, he's a great teacher. He's made a study of teaching wind instruments and can really help identify technical issues. Working with Mike on improvising and jazz phrasing and articulation has been really fun and productive for me, and has improved my musicianship in other areas (I'm mostly and upright bassist). I haven't had a sax lesson for a little while, but I recently got a clarinet and I'm back with Mike. The lessons are, as always, rewarding and enjoyable. Highly recommended."

"I just had a lesson with Sergio, and he seems like a good instructor. I learned some helpful things (I'm a complete beginner and was having trouble even just making a consistent sound with the saxophone). For instance, I learned how far the mouthpiece should be on the cork, and I learned an interesting breathing exercise for saxophone. I also learned the C Major Scale. My only trouble with the lesson was that my internet isn't very good, so the video (and sometimes the audio) cut in and out at times. But as for Sergio himself, I would recommend him for learning the saxophone. He seems like he knows what he's doing, and he is kind in his instruction."

""Now that I'm studying with Mike, the efficiency of my practice time is way, way up."

Mike is the first coach who emphasizes "practice the hard parts". So much so that any time a note comes out either not in rhythm, not in pitch, or not a great sound, I have the confidence to stop and repeat the hard part until it's no longer hard. Even when learning to improvise, if the notes I pick on the sax don't match the ones I first heard in my head, I have the confidence to stop and really find those notes that my mind imagined. Eventually I'll be able to hit the ones I intend the first time. He also advocates to always know the purpose of any practicing you're doing---there's no more aimless noodling. Even when I'm jamming, there's a specific goal in mind.

The second thing I really get from Mike is that he expects me to know what notes I'm playing and what role they fill in the key. Formerly my method of improvising was to hunt and peck, occasionally hitting notes outside the key and finding a way to "work them back in". But now, if I'm riffing on the note F in the key of B-flat, Mike wants me to know that that's the 5 of the key. And to also know where the 3 and 7 are---like a home base where you know it's safe to play."

Choosing a Neck Strap | How to Play Saxophone Tips

Learning how to play saxophone starts with the right equipment--namely, a quality neck strap! Read on for some helpful advice from Brookings, SD teacher Carl S...    The saxophone is a unique instrument for many reasons. One example is that the saxophone is the only band instrument that uses a neck strap. Unfortunately, the neck strap is often the most overlooked aspect of playing the instrument. One of the first things that I stress to a new student is the importance of the neck str …
