David S.

Fairfax, VA 22033

(13)

Online Guitar Teacher

David enjoys teaching students from all different backgrounds and levels of proficiency. Whether you are just starting out or a virtuoso shredder in the making, he is happy to teach you! Over all, he is fairly laid back, as long as you practice. He usually combines work with reading off of the treble clef (what he likens to "eating your vegetables." You may not want to do it, but it will make you a healthier musician!) with learning more popular songs (or songs the student says they would like to learn) through tablature and chord charts, depending on the style of the song.

David is also very pro music theory. He usually incorporates music theory into the curriculum in conjunction with the material already being discussed. He is also very knowledgeable about composition/songwriting, and if the student is interested in learning more about this area, he is happy to share what he knows!

About David

David is a successful singer/songwriter/guitarist out of Fairfax, VA. He has a bachelor's degree in Music with a concentration in composition from Salisbury University, where he also studied jazz and classical guitar . In the 25 years he has been performing (20 of those professionally) and playing guitar, he has released 4 CDs and written over 200 original songs. He has opened for major national acts like Journey, Maroon 5, Toby Keith, My Chemical Romance, The Used, Thrice, Story of the Year, The Bouncing Souls, Eric Hutchinson, Virginia Coalition and Graham Colton. In the process, he has performed at such notable venues as FedEx Field, Nationals Park, Jiffy Lube Live/Nissan Pavilion, the 9:30 Club, The Hamilton and Rams Head Live.

As a teacher, David has taught in numerous locations in the Maryland area for the last 23 years. H

is students generally range anywhere from 4-70+ years old and come from a wide range of backgrounds and levels of proficiency, from basic beginners to advanced. Some of his students have also gone on to pursue careers in music, others have just learned as a hobby, and some have been somewhere in between the two. All are welcome!

I had to switch the lesson to in-home roughly 3 hours before the scheduled lesson. David was great and accommodating. He gave me a crash course on scales, which I didn't know anything about, and explained them so that I actually started to understand.

My first lesson with David was excellent! He is very patient and knowledgeable. I now have extremely high expectations for learning to play the guitar. I highly recommend him. He gave me a thorough explanation about how guitars are made made, the parts, we tuned the guitar and I am ready to groove!

She has help me with the song, gave me vocal and breathing techniques to reach high tones and even fix the guitar tablatures to match my voice to play it at the wedding. I've been teaching guitar for 25 years and my students have gone on to various musical fields of endeavor. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play simple chords and as time goes on you'll be able to play tunes or musical pieces. Every student has different goals ,wants and needs..and it is for this matter that an individual and personal approach is needed to address those musical aspects, which are specifically geared towards their learning the instrument .I use various resources at my disposal: books, cd's, dvd's as well as my many years of experience and knowledge of performing and teaching. I specialize in Jazz and Classical but I'm also knowledgeable in other genres such as pop, rock ,folk etc... For Jazz: I use the Berklee series ,For classical: I use the Matteo Carcassi and Fernando Sor methods .I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Raymund

Raymund de la Pena has been playing music professionally for the past 32 years and was introduced to music at an early age. He started playing the piano at age 8 and shifted to the guitar a year later when he heard "yesterday"by the Beatles, the reason for the move to a different instrument was inevitable as he states "I heard some nuances and sonic ideas that the instrument wasn't giving to me and pretty much i heard that on the guitar from the get go". And so,with his fascination for music he went to get his college degree in music performance. After graduation he played gigs all over the world( jazz bars, hotel gigs, session work etc...). In 2001 ,he was given the oportunity to be the musical director of the broadway musical "RENT" in Singapore where it got rave reviews. In 2003 he went to perform on a cruise ship in europe that traveled

to 20 countries as a musical director for the showband.

In 2011 he released his debut record "The Long Road Taken" independently with his group(composed of session musicians)the "RDP Project" wherein it featured all of his original compositions, describing it as :"The Long Road Taken is an amalgamation of the different facets of jazz, particularly in a quartet setting".

He has performed with Victor Jones( renown drummer) at the Zinc bar in New York and at Skippers in Newark,New Jersey. He has also performed with other Jazz artists such as Eliane Amherd ,Elin Kathleen Melgarejo,Doug Little,Mel Davis and have attended master classes by the great trumpet player Eddie Henderson, jazz great Charlie Byrd, jazz legends Ray Brown and Herb Ellis just to name a few.
Ray's playing and improvisational style is described as modern -which blends the relaxed and ductile articulation which is akin to horn players, but yet deeply grounded in the jazz tradition of swing, melody and the blues.

Degrees/training: Bachelor of Music (Major in Classical Guitar) University of the Philippines.

Online Guitar Teacher

Specializing in a comprehensive approach to music which includes instrumental technique, music theory, rhythm and aural skills, music history and appreciation, music performance and songwriting in order to build a solid foundation in musicianship. Pop, Rock, Country and Folk genres.

About Lena

GUITAR CURRICULUM (VOCAL INSTRUCTION CURRICULUM SEE BELOW):
You like music. I like music. You want to learn how to play guitar. I can teach you how to play guitar, and so much more. It's that simple. I have real-world experience in getting out there and playing guitar in a band, in front of a real crowd, and I can teach you how to do the same. Whether you're interested in performing in front of your relatives, at your local open mic down the street, or if you want to pursue music as a possible profession, you need strong, basic fundamentals to get there. That's where I come in.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons include: guitar technique/knowledge/maintenance:
-Getting to know your instrument, such as the name for parts of the guitar, and what they contribute to the instrument. How to identify notes on each string and in every

fret across the fretboard. First, you need to learn how to speak guitar. This is like learning the basic language so we can communicate with each other.
You: "Why do I have to identify all the parts of the guitar?"
Me: "So when I tell you to strum over the sound hole, you won't mistake it for your ear."

-How to tune and care for your guitar such as changing strings
You: "Why do I need to learn how to tune my guitar and properly change my strings?"
Me: "So when you learn how to play the thing, it sounds good and stays in tune, and your neighbor's dog won't start howling when you pick up your instrument."

-Chords and Strumming: Open chords, Power chords, Barre chords, 7th chords, 9th chords, 1st and 2nd inversion chords. More chords than you can shake a stick at.
You: "Why do I need to learn chords?"
Me: "So you string chords together, and play a song, Silly."

-Scales (Major scales, Natural minor scales, Harmonic minor scales, Melodic minor scales, In every key and in six different positions)
You: "Why do I need to learn scales?"
Me: "Just to torture you. Just kidding! Scales build strength and speed and get your two hands working together. And scales are fundamental for learning licks and writing melodies later on down the road."

-Other fundamentals include chord chart reading, tablature reading, and specific technical skills such as hammer-ons and pull-offs, palm muting, using a pick, and finger picking styles.

MUSIC THEORY:
Strictly for impressing your friends and/or classmates. Ok, not really. Music theory is important, especially if you want to play other instruments down the road, and to give you a the "Big Picture" of music.

Fundamental theory you will learn includes
-Basic music notation (The music alphabet, rhythm, the staff, ledger lines, time signatures, etc)
-Major and Minor Scales and Key Signatures (You've heard about the Circle of Fifths. Now you'll be able to decipher it!)
-How to identify and play intervals (Major, Minor, Perfect)
-Chord theory (What makes a Major chord, well, Major; Minor chord, Minor. Diminished, Augmented, etc)
-Harmonic Analysis
You: "I've heard about this I IV V I progression stuff. What does that mean?"
Me: "In due time, Grasshopper"
-Transposition (Good for changing the keys of your favorite songs so you or your lead singer can sing them in his/her vocal range)

First we learn this stuff through take-home worksheets. Then, we apply what we know to the guitar and make it useful and practical.

Music history and appreciation. Ever wonder about the origins of the guitar and how it came about to be one of the most popular instruments played in modern time? Or who the great Blues guitarists were from the 30's and 40's and how they influenced later day Rockers such as Jimmy Page or Keith Richards? Or how about how modern Western music formed and is what it is today, starting with Ancient Greece, through the Middle Ages, to Beethoven, to Ragtime to popular music today? Yep, we got that covered. It's all about perspective.

Songwriting. So you're tired of playing other people's songs and it's time to get your thoughts on paper. Congratulations. You are officially an Artist as well as a Musician. I can teach you how to develop your lyrics and chord progressions into cohesive, tightly arranged songs sure to make your Mom or Girlfriend/Boyfriend proud. Songwriting expands the limits of learning, that simply copying another artist note-for-note cannot do. Tapping your "Creative Vein" is the ultimate path to learning music. Let's get started.

music performance. Alright, you got knowledge, you got skills, you got songs. You have the tools to get out there and show the world what you can do.

-Intervals (major, minor, perfect)
-Chord theory and harmonic analysis
-Transposition
-Aural and rhythm skills

MUSIC HISTORY AND APPRECIATION:
Have you ever how modern Western music formed and how it became what it is today? We’ll start with Ancient Greece, travel through the Middle Ages, learn about Classical composers such as Beethoven, and study different styles of music from Ragtime to today’s popular music all with listening examples to immerse you into the world of music history.

SONGWRITING
If you've grown tired of playing other people's music, then it’s time for you to get your songs on paper or recorded. I’ll teach you how to develop your lyrics and chord progressions into cohesive, tightly arranged songs. Songwriting expands the limits of learning that merely playing another artist’s music cannot do. Tapping your "creative vein" is the ultimate path to learning music.

MUSIC PERFORMANCE
Alright, you've got knowledge, you've got skills and you've got songs. You have the tools to get out there and show the world what you can do. But before you hit the local area open mic or book a gig, let's talk about music performance. You’ll learn simple, effective techniques such as strong stage presence and audience rapport.

I can't express just how glad I am that I found Lena two years ago when my sons wanted to learn how to play the guitar. Her approach is perfect and makes them love learning and playing. They're also learning how to perform (playing and singing) on-stage, which has so many added benefits, musically and personally. I can't imagine there's a better teacher and experience around.

I love to teach and have taught many hundreds of students over the past twenty years. Many of my students have gone on to professional careers in the music field. I am primarily trained in classical guitar and I also teach rock, folk, finger-style and jazz basics. I strive to help students deepen their love of music and to form a connection through that. Experience has shown me that all development as a musician arises from these factors. I look forward to meeting and having fun together!

About Roger

I love teaching! I love connecting with people to find out what inspires them and I feel that I learn as much from my students as I teach them.

I have almost 30 years of playing experience in a variety of styles and over 20 years of experience teaching the guitar to many hundreds students of all ages and backgrounds. I have taught in many different situations, including through schools, music stores and privately. I am primarily trained as a classical guitarist and I hold a Master of Music Degree in Guitar Performance from The Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University. I have been told by many of my students that I am patient, understanding, very approachable and fun.

Whatever our goals may be in learning to play a musical instrument, the experience and skills we gain in doing so can serve us in every area of our li

ves.

Music is for me a journey of self-discovery. I would love to share in and be a guide on your journey too!

I started taking lessons with Roger almost an year ago. I was completely clueless when I signed up for classes. He convinced me that I can play a musical instrument. He has guided me a lot throughout. From picking up a guitar, to teaching me my first song. He is very passionate about music and that shows from his work as a musician and as a teacher. Roger tries to make sure that his students love music the same way he does. As a teacher he is very patient and flexible. He tailors each class to his student's needs.
He is one of the greatest teacher I have worked with. I really look forward to my lesson every week.

Roger teaches our 8 year-old daughter introduction lessons for guitar. His casual approach and friendly demeanor are a perfect approach. Our daughter anticipates weekly interaction with Roger; she considers him a friend who plays guitar games and patiently listens to her stories while they play.

Roger is both a skilled musician and measured teacher focused on the long-game of loving music rather than immediate gains. We are very please with his work.

Roger was my first guitar teacher, and one of the best teachers that I've had the pleasure to work with. As a professional guitarist, I have had the chance to look back on when I was studying with Roger and compare my opinion now to the opinion I had while I was studying with him. My opinion now is the same as it was back then: Roger is an exceptionally capable and talented educator. He is very easy to work with and is always flexible in each lesson. Flexibility is important; an ideal teacher will have lesson plans with specific skills that he/she feels the student needs to learn, but they will also allow the student's current interests to guide the lessons. Roger was always happy to address any questions or concerns I had, but also made sure to guide my attention to critical skills that helped me grow as a musician. One such skill is proper technique, which is necessary for improving the student's ability to play and for preventing injury. With his background as a classical guitarist, Roger was able to teach me perfect left and right hand technique, which is something I still consider to be one of my strongest assets as a guitarist. His skills and interests extend far beyond classical guitar into genres like rock and jazz. In our lessons we would work on just about anything. We covered topics and styles like Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Wes Montgomery, improvisation, James Taylor's fingerstyle playing, music theory, and sight reading. Overall, I found Roger to be an ideal teacher for students at any skill level, from total beginners to those who are highly experienced.

While teaching bass is my specialty, I've been teaching guitar for 4 years and have amassed quite the collection. The overwhelming majority of my students at the shops I teach at take lessons on guitar, so most of my time is actually spent teaching guitar. In lessons, we'll cover basic chords, scales, and rhythms, as well as some introductory music theory so the student knows why they're playing what they play.

About Tommy

My name is Tommy. I've been playing bass and guitar since I was 11 years old. When I was in high school, I won my school's Duke Ellington Jazz Performance Award my junior year. Around this time I began to work at my neighborhood's local lesson shop Let's Play Music! off of W Broad Street in Falls Church, VA. Following high school, I attended the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City, studying jazz bass performance with players who have played and recorded with John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Bobby McFerrin, among others. I received my degree in Jazz Bass Performance and since returning to the DC area have taught at Let's Play Music, Bach 2 Rock, and Music and Arts. Outside of my academic accomplishments, I play in and record a number of bands. I play out at different venues from Richmond to Baltimore regularly and ha

ve gone on tour twice before. I specialize in electric bass and music theory, but am quite comfortable teaching beginner to intermediate guitar.

I have been taking guitar lessons with Andrew, and he has been an excellent tutor. Though I started without too much experience in music or in guitar playing, Andrew demonstrated a lot of patience to ensure that I master the basics. His patience is definitely a rare trait for a musician who is as accomplished as Andrew, and in my opinion demonstrates not only his commit to music, but also his passion for sharing the joy of guitar to everyone. As a newcomer to learning this amazing instrument, I could not ask for a better instructor.

"Josh is a great teacher!

I'm 47 and could pretty much tell you that I was holding a guitar, but not much more. Josh is very patient, and understanding. H
e doesn't even seem to get bothered by my endless, irrelevant questions. I've been putting off learning for 40 years, after working with Josh, I have no idea why.

The atmosphere is very comfortable and relaxed, and while he is willing to take it slow, it is very evident that Josh has the ability to take you to whatever level of play you are looking for."

"I've had a wonderful experience with Jim, and plan on continuing my weekly lessons with him. His methodology is logical and straightforward, his personali
ty is open-minded, affable, and he's quite the prodigy when it comes to his skill level on guitar. He can fluidly change from a bluesy twang to a warm jazz sound, and switch to a nostalgic riff on the acoustic guitar at a moment's notice. He is everything I could ask for in a teacher, and in the short month that I've been taught by him, my learning curve has steepened with every visit. I'm learning so much from this guy and recommend anyone with an interest in guitar to pursue taking lessons from this guy before everyone else with the right idea books him first!
