I am available for private lessons at my studio in Center City Philadelphia, as well as online lessons. I work with students of all ages and levels, including beginners.

Teaching is a passion of mine and I truly enjoy helping students of all levels achieve their musical goals.

I don’t apply a singular approach for each student, because every student has their own strengths and weaknesses. As lessons continue, I pay close attention to how a student learns and picks up on new information which I use to guide me in choosing the most effective strategies going forward. Depending on the level, lessons can range from reading music, developing and improving technique, and understanding the music to allow for informed musical choices.

While I will always have suggestions regarding the choice of repertoire, I think it’s very important for the student to be playing music that they personally enjoy and will be motivated to practice. With beginners I do encourage a more structured approach,

This 5 star review is long overdue. My daughter has been taking piano lessons from Jonathan for 2+ years, and we couldn’t be happier. Jonathan is an extremely knowledgeable musician, and his approach is a great mix of instruction, patience, and fun. It’s been an overwhelmingly positive experience.

Guitar is among the most intimate performance instruments. Whether strumming it for rock 'n roll or caressing its strings for folk or classical music, it evokes an instantly recognizable emotional response. It's become the ideal instrument for expressing the vulnerability and uncertainty of love, the brief sting of agony, or any existential expression.

It's portable. It's loud enough to be heard in a crowd of voices, but quiet enough to be practiced in your bedroom. Musically its fretboard is based on the piano's chromatic scale. Its six strings accommodate both simple and complex voicing, depending on the player's skill or desired effect.

As a classically trained musician with 25 years of guitar performance experience in pop, folk, and rock music, I offer a range of styles, techniques, and comprehensive approaches to understanding and mastering this historic instrument, depending on your personal preferences. My focus is on exploration, discovery, and learner-directed lessons. My ...

"Steve G: A Superb Instructor

I'm a student of Steve G.'s and am in my 40's. I had previously taken classical piano lessons from the age of 7 until 18, but I wanted to try my hand at guitar. Having come from a long line of teachers in my own family, I am well acquainted with the great (but often under-appreciated) skill it requires to be a quality instructor of any kind. A superb instructor (like Steve G.) should possess the following qualities:

1. Patient: Prodigies or masters of their art often lack the ability to convey their ability on a small scale to their pupils. Steve is an amazing performer and artist, and yet he is humble enough to walk alongside you, particularly when you are establishing the fundamentals of guitar technique. He will find the areas that need work and allow you to see how a small amount of persistence can result in large gains.

2. Encouraging: Steve is always optimistic. You can feel his passion for music in every word he speaks. He has the rare gift of making you see the flashes of your own talent, and he will help you build on those. He will not only help you figure out ways to overcome your obstacles in playing, but he will also deepen your appreciation of the instrument itself. He even went with me to the store to pick out an awesome acoustic guitar!

3. Individualizing: Steve doesn't have a once-size-fits-all method of teaching. He is a very keen and observant instructor who will challenge you based on your progress as well as your natural abilities. He will get to know you as a human being and as a budding artist. He will find ways to allow you to take your own inspirations and use them to drive you forward in your musical exploration.

4. Exemplary: Steve has tremendous integrity, not only as an artist but also as a professional instructor. He is also a tremendous guitarist with a broad repertoire, and watching him play will motivate you to become even better.

I hope this review is helpful to anyone who is considering taking lessons. Sign up with Steve and you won't regret it! Good luck on your journey!"

"Based upon my experience with Bill teaching my son, I would definitely recommend him for guitar lessons. He was always upbeat, pleasant and ready to share his knowledge, not to mention, he could listen to a song and then jot down the sheet music for it. In that regard, he could teach a person any song they would like to learn. I would say, my most convincing recommendation comes from the fact that my son was always ready and happy to attend a session with Bill, which as a mom, made my heart happy. Give Bill a try!"

From Guitar to Mandolin and More: How Easy is it to Switch Instruments?

It's an awesome feeling when you start making music! And after you've mastered a few songs, you might even have the itch to start branching out. Here, Doswell, VA teacher Jesse S. answers the question: Once you learn guitar, how easy is it to switch to bass, mandolin, or other stringed instruments?   This is a question that I hear frequently in guitar lessons.  Most students who start playing guitar will eventually become interested in trying to learn another stringed instrument; but doe …

10 Extremely Influential Guitarists Who Were Not Technically Great

You don't have to be a virtuoso guitarist to touch people's hearts with your music! Guitar teacher Samuel B. shares a few of his favorite great-but-not-that-great famous guitar players... Towards the end of Johnny Cash's autobiography, you'll find the following paragraph: As to my musical future, my prospects look good. I can whack on a guitar as incompetently as I could a year ago, probably more so. I can sing just as well, or as badly, as I ever could. And I've got more songs trying …
