With over 20 years as a professional saxophonist and 15 years teaching experience I know the demands of a performing musician professionally and academically. I teach students how to produce a good tone quality with characteristic vibrato. I can teach students to become good at reading music. Students who are interested in jazz or pop styles of music will be taught improvisation techniques and how to play by ear.
About Carl
As far back as I can remember I have always enjoyed performing music. I can remember during my elementary school years how I would play drums during church service. Some days I would sneak in my dad's closet to play his saxophone. I began learning how to play saxophone in middle school and by the ti

In my 17 years playing the saxophone, I've performed in all sorts of places and styles - orchestras, jazz bands, chamber groups, rock concerts, musical pits, you name it! I've taught beginners, college students, and even retirees.
I've studied classical and jazz music at Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne, and Baldwin Wallace Universities with James Houlik, Mike Tomaro, and others. I have studied composition, music theory, and music history, too. After all, there's more to learning an instrument than just knowing which fingers to press down!
I can help you improve your skills and style whether you're just starting out on the sax or fine-tuning your college auditions!

Dave was able to meet me where I was and move me toward the goals I had. As as an adult learner, I went in with zero experience with the saxophone but a clear picture of what I wanted to play and somewhat how I wanted to sound. Dave has a great set-up where we have privacy to make noise (sax's aren't known for being quiet). He's able to pluck things out on the piano quickly or to pull something up on the computer or just play. I went from starting out, to wanting to play a few songs, to improvising. Dave has been very helpful and ultimately keeps me improving and moving forward. I've taken other lessons on other instruments, but I will say this is one of the better teachers I have had. He listens well and is able to articulate what he wants you to do --- not trying to be a guru, but more of a guide that keeps you on track."

Learning how to play saxophone starts with the right equipment--namely, a quality neck strap! Read on for some helpful advice from Brookings, SD teacher Carl S... The saxophone is a unique instrument for many reasons. One example is that the saxophone is the only band instrument that uses a neck strap. Unfortunately, the neck strap is often the most overlooked aspect of playing the instrument. One of the first things that I stress to a new student is the importance of the neck str …

“Is saxophone hard to learn?” Not exactly. The saxophone, like many instruments, is not difficult to begin playing. It can however, be challenging to master Many people say that it’s easy to make a sound on the saxophone, but harder to make a good sound (at least, at first). But if you’re considering getting started with saxophone lessons - don’t be discouraged! Any self-disciplined student can progress in their saxophone skills by taking the right steps as a beginner.
