Learn about rhythm, melody, harmony, and dynamics, and how they apply to the saxophone. Explore the range of your instrument through various scales. Build solid skills through understanding the mechanics of how your body and instrument work together.
*Disclaimer* I'm currently not taking beginner students on voice/singing, guitar, bass, drums, piano, and ukulele. I highly recommend my studio partners Melissa though. Please check out her profile:
I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.
Philosophy of Learning
Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations. It's really important to know though that everyone makes their own experience. The process of learning music involves you learning as much about your own mind and body as it does any external concepts, so please keep in mind only you can move yourself forward.
I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.
I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!) Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.
Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype. (*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)
*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
My studio is equipped with:

Jesse has given directions on how to successfully become a better musician. His approach and explanation on musical theories was much more understandable than what I was previously reading. Overall, I found the lessons to be very usefull.

alfred shorter jr is a major force to be reckoned with on the bass scene. His clear cut technique for bass comes from years of playing and experimenting with various approach’s to find new ways to open up bass playing to the masses. Book a lessons with him you will not be disappointed. -

She is the best teacher ever!!! I have been looking for an excellent French horn teacher for a long time and ones like her are hard to come by. I have learned so much from her that I couldn't even finish telling through a review.
I have started thirty beginner students on alto and tenor saxophone who have advanced to a high level of performance ability. I teach basic musicianship and music theory as well as saxophone and cover concert and jazz band styles. My students expand their ranges and take on higher difficulty as their lessons progress.
I have taught music (K-8) in a private school in Palo Alto for 16 years and have created a very successful program. I conduct 5 bands, an orchestra and a beginner string ensemble. I have started hundreds of children on instruments and have taught dozens of children privately with great results. I have a BA degree from Luther College and did post-graduate work in music at the University of Iowa.
Great lesson with Stephen, my son was getting excellent sound out of his trumpet in a matter of minutes!

Stephen is a fabulous trumpet teacher. Thoughtful, patient, professional.

Claire and Benjamin F.
The kids' first trumpet lesson was wonderful! Stephen was patient and has a good sense of humor. Neither of the kids have ever played the trumpet before, but by the end of their lesson they'd already made noticeable progress. We also greatly appreciate Stephen's willingness to teach the kids together. One was nervous to take lessons solo, but excited to take lessons with a friend. Stephen is the kind of instructor you always hope to find when you're looking for private lessons - knowledgeable and kind. I'm confident the kids will grow in their music skills through these lessons!
I believe in teaching with honesty and integrity. In the past, I have learned under private teachers who did not care about teaching the saxophone properly and seriously which led to awful habits and horrible embouchure. The lessons will not only provide accurate information about the saxophone and proper playing techniques, but it will be circled around what you need as a musician. Although you not become a professional musician, it is still essential that any students deserve the best!
Hello my name is Yuh-Boh, I recently received my Masters in New England Conservatory. I have been playing the saxophone since elementary school and performed many recitals over the years. I believe that each student have different strengths and weaknesses. As such, I make it a priority to make sure that my lesson plans fit the needs of my students. I' am proud to say that my students have been able to make it into the All State Band or into their schools wind ensemble! It is important to note that I am trained mostly in the classical field and do not play too much jazz, though the basics are very much the same and I would not mind helping out.
I believe in catering lessons to a students individual desires and musical goals. I play Tenor, Alto, Soprano and EWI. Our lessons can cover a broad range of concepts like: Musicality/Performance Jazz Improvisation Composition/Arranging How to practice Tone and Sound production Technique Doubling Reading/Sight Reading Learning Tunes Using petals and electronic musical components And MUCH, MUCH MORE!!!
With over 20 years playing experience Preston began playing professionally very early. He has toured over 6 countries including England, France, Switzerland and Italy. He received his degree in Jazz Studies/ Performance from the prestigious University of North Texas Jazz program, the first Jazz program in the country and still the greatest with alumni like Norah Jones, The Eagles and The Blues Brothers.
My son took lessons in person with him but the school moved.
We are very happy to continue with such a positive teacher!

Preston is incredibly knowledgeable and professional. He is kind and takes time for new students to understand the concepts at their pace. Our son is really looking forward to his next lesson! Thank you!

A very patient person.Listens too what i'm saying has got me doing things i really haven't thought about doing before, such as listening and playing the notes from the bass line.Something new i'm going too have too get used to doing in order too become a better sax player.
When you come into my music studio, we keep things simple, enjoyable and definitely a lot of fun (Isn't that some of the reason you signed up for the lesson anyway, right!?)
I have been in music education for 10 years and a musician for a lot longer. I will teach not only the music notes but how to express your self through "sound exploration".
I get exited just talking about it!
I graduated from Tennessee State University with a Bachelors of Music, concentration music education. I receive my Masters of Education and Education Specialist degree from Lincoln Memorial University. I have spent the past 10 years teaching instrumental and vocal music in middle and elementary public school. Alongside music education, I studied saxophone under professional saxophonist, Jimmy Bowland. I have had the opportunity to travel aboard, performing with the "Nashville Aces" at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Umbria, Italy in 2007 and even meet the great Sonny Rollins.
From 2008 to 2010 I performed saxophone within the stage band of "Alvin Moore Entertainment" stage production company and which produced recorded stage play, "A Mother's Prayer" featuring Johnny Gill, Robin Givens, Shirley Murdock and Jermaine Crawford which h
as aired numerous times on B.E.T. as well as stages in and around the southeast.
Since 2013 I have been performing within the funk band, "Function with a C", playing various weddings, corporate gathering and other social events and have recorded our band album, "F6" in 2016. Currently I am working on my album entitled "Sacred Spaces" and building recording studio.
Currently I am band leader and lead Saxophonist within the instrumental group "Sacred Spaces"...returning to the place that bring you back to life" and building my own recording studio.
Music is Life.. I find music not only something to be played and enjoyed, but a means to open my "hearing" to people and places. I believe everything makes music, however not everyone hears it. It is through this medium, that one "Hears" better. I have also learned that when I learn or study music, I am also learn and study life. As a teacher, I like to share these "life music" nuggets with my students when they pop during lesson. While I do not consider my self a counselor or life coach, I believe that good teachers care not only teach the subject but also tie it in to the bigger picture.
My desire is that all student i teach learn, grow and be inspired by music. Music has the power to inspire creativity, empower confidence, breaking down barriers and building connections. As a musician and music instructor, my hope is that any student I teach would be able to experience all of these qualities.
My name is Jerry. I LOVE music and passing my knowledge on to others. I have played many different instruments in many different kinds of bands. It all one major thing in common, it was FUN! If you are not having fun while learning an instrument you won't want to learn. Lessons can be fun AND educational at the same time. I have had many parents tell me I'm one of the best teachers they have ever seen. (A couple of them were public school teachers themselves). I truly want my students to succeed and I will do everything in my power to help them accomplish that!

Jerry is a wonderful instructor. I wasn’t sure how online lessons would go but they have been seamless and fun and my son is making progress with the bugle. I would highly recommend this format and this teacher. The convenience and quality of instruction are excellent. We are signing up for more lessons and may move on to another instrument once my son feels confident on the bugle.

Jerry is knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I’m looking forward to our series.
"Gleb has only been teaching my son the saxophone for 6 months and he's already playing solos at his school concerts. Gleb plays along with him to show him
any mistakes he makes and shows him what's he's doing wrong. He's very knowledgeable in music theory and doesn't just know music, he feels the notes he plays. I'm very glad I found Gleb to be my son's saxophone teacher."
"Kay is very knowledgeable, kind and accommodating. She is very encouraging and never makes me feel dumb when I hit a sour note. (As a beginning beginner
, that happens a lot!) I am amazed at how much I have learned in such a short time!"
"cool. best teacher"
"Amazing and patient instructor. Wonderful with young musicians! Highly recommend."
"Excellent musician and teacher, nice guy too :)
Sean is an excellent saxophone player and instructor. He is knowledgeable on music theory and has a relax
ed easy going teaching style. He is enthusiastic about teaching and playing music which makes for a fun lesson. I enjoyed meeting Sean and I look forward to taking more lessons with him."
"We have had ongoing lessons with Josh for about a year and we are still very pleased. Easy-going demeanor, very positive with his feedback yet still gets
his point across when my son is not doing something correctly. He is teaching him not just how to play the music but also how to improve his style and structure of play. We picked a good one!"
"Very good first session!"
"Joseph is a wonderful instructor and very patient with kids."
"Excellent teacher. My son (11y old) He enjoyed a lot, and he was so happy with his new teacher."
Learning how to play saxophone starts with the right equipment--namely, a quality neck strap! Read on for some helpful advice from Brookings, SD teacher Carl S...
The saxophone is a unique instrument for many reasons. One example is that the saxophone is the only band instrument that uses a neck strap. Unfortunately, the neck strap is often the most overlooked aspect of playing the instrument. One of the first things that I stress to a new student is the importance of the neck str …
