I love working with brand new beginners all the way seasoned players who might be prepping for music college. I like to keep an fun atmosphere around the lesson and try to find out what drives my students.

We'll work through pieces from school and expand into topics such as improvisation, reading, music theory, and finding inspiration from great players. I have a jazz background, and love working with aspiring jazz musicians as well.

Steve has been great. We had to switch to online due to social distancing, and it has worked out just fine. He even gave us the first online lesson free to see if it we wanted to continue with it. He is a natural at communicating with kids, keeps it very fun, and has been great at getting our 8 year old started with piano.

Thanks for letting me provide a reference for Alex. I have taken alto sax lessons from him over the years, starting about 4-5 years ago. Alex is a great musician and teacher. Each lesson was consistently structured for: sound quality and listening, technical work and reading, duets, and improvisation. Rather than heavy music theory, he would instead provide routines to reinforce these concepts. He was always patient, and emphasized what I did well, with subtle redirection to correct problems. I definitely improved under his guidance and teaching.

The only reason I stopped seeing him was that my job became very demanding, and I could not devote enough time to practice and justify the time and cost of lessons. But even when I showed up unprepared, he was understanding and flexible to work with me.

If it would have been possible to have Alex come to me, I would have welcomed that.

I specialize in Jazz Saxophone, but also am very fluent and familiar with the classical world as well. One huge plus that my saxophone students have is that I can accompany them on piano. This makes lessons in jazz improvisation much more effective. I focus on fundamental skills such as sight reading, technique, jazz and classical theory, improvisation and composition. I also make recordings for my students on request. I have worked with multiple wind ensembles and jazz bands in the past, and can help polish up ensemble music.

Joey is the best kind of teacher--he challenges my son and makes it fun for him. He pushes my son outside of his comfort zone, but in a good way. My son's technique and tone have improved so much. And best of all, he's really enjoying Joey as his teacher!
Suzie
Joey has been teaching piano to my 9 year old son for almost a year now. We are very happy with the relationship our son and Joey have, and with our son’s progress. My husband and I both studied music in college, and we’ve both been music teachers at various points in our careers. We know a solid teacher when we see one. Joey somehow manages to set high expectations for our son while remaining laid back and fun. He lets our son explore different types of music as our son’s interest changes. We find that flexibility refreshing and necessary to keep young kids interested. Out of all his activities, our son loves piano the most, and a lot of that has to do with the quality of teaching he receives from Joey. Speaking of flexibility, Joey has adapted his teaching seamlessly to teaching via zoom (his lessons were previously taught in our home), and even put together a lovely virtual recital for all the kids in his studio during the covid-19 social distancing situation. We heard about Joey from friends, and continue to recommend him to others.
Andrea
Joey is knowledgable and talented in his craft. My energetic five year old son looks forward to his lessons each week. Joey is an experienced teacher, his lesson structure and management skills keep my son on task and learning. He is patient and flexible. We highly recommend Joey as a music teacher. These lessons are an investment in our child’s future and we consider ourselves extremely lucky to have found Joey.

Eric Ferrer teaching style is very clear/simple/ and intuitive. He really shows you there’s simplicity in learning anything. I thought the piano was a stride i always wanted to take on. Yet with Eric the process in learning how to use both hands was so simple that I was very surprised.

I recently bought a drum set to starting how to play but coming from no experience I had no idea what I was doing. I felt sloppy and uncoordinated so I decided to try and find a teacher that can meet my schedule/expectations. That is when I stumbled upon Eric Ferrer’s profile. The lessons were soooooo Simplistic 😌 he really gave me peace of mind. Eric Broke the process into its barebones and revealed how simple it is to learn drums. I love my new teacher, he has the best patience, attitude, and commitment to you the student and the lesson.

"After years of taking saxophone lessons from the so called "great teachers" in Los Angeles I was really frustrated with my progress or lack of progress. Luckily I found Rick. In only a couple of months with Rick I was improvising at a level that I couldn’t even believe was possible. He has a system that is amazing and incredibly simple to learn and to apply to all the songs I love to play.
If you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced player, Rick can elevate your playing faster than you can imagine. I can't recommend him highly enough. Rick's and his system are simply incredible."

""Now that I'm studying with Mike, the efficiency of my practice time is way, way up."

Mike is the first coach who emphasizes "practice the hard parts". So much so that any time a note comes out either not in rhythm, not in pitch, or not a great sound, I have the confidence to stop and repeat the hard part until it's no longer hard. Even when learning to improvise, if the notes I pick on the sax don't match the ones I first heard in my head, I have the confidence to stop and really find those notes that my mind imagined. Eventually I'll be able to hit the ones I intend the first time. He also advocates to always know the purpose of any practicing you're doing---there's no more aimless noodling. Even when I'm jamming, there's a specific goal in mind.

The second thing I really get from Mike is that he expects me to know what notes I'm playing and what role they fill in the key. Formerly my method of improvising was to hunt and peck, occasionally hitting notes outside the key and finding a way to "work them back in". But now, if I'm riffing on the note F in the key of B-flat, Mike wants me to know that that's the 5 of the key. And to also know where the 3 and 7 are---like a home base where you know it's safe to play."
