I'm currently not taking beginner students on voice/singing, guitar, bass, drums, piano, and ukulele. I highly recommend my studio partners Melissa though. Please check out her profile:

My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Once or twice a year we'll also stage a larger event off site for more individual students and bands classes to perform.
Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Music Stands

*A P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console and Yamaha organ

*A MicroKorg Synthesizer

*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, Saxophone, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

Beginner to advanced students who are at least 8 years old.

About Diane
My journey in music began when I was around 5 years old and first heard the children's choir sing in church. My mother used to tell me that I would beg her to let me sing in the choir but she would always have to tell me I wasn't old enough. As soon as I was old enough, she enrolled me in church choir and I've been in it ever since.

I have performed with the Rochester symphony orchestra and chorale, Rochester community band, Rochester civic music, church choirs and orchestras, Lake of the Isles community band, and performed Handel's Messiah at Carnegie hall in New York City. I've done some acting and singing in musicals as well.

As I got older, I discovered playing the clarinet was fun but never gave up singing. I just did them both. After becoming proficient on clarinet, I explored flute, oboe, saxophone, piano and last
ly, the celtic harp.

My philosophy on teaching is "you are never too old to experience the joy of making music on whatever instrument you choose and I will strive to help you discover your hidden musical talents".

During my 20+ years of teaching, I've had many students perform with local youth orchestras, receive superior ratings in high school music competitions, win concerto competitions, be excepted to perform with the Rochester Symphony Orchestra in their playing with the pros program and go on to college to major or minor in music.

*** Lesson Details ***
Music should be fun and not a chore so I like to really get to know my students and structure their lessons in a way so the student has fun but also feels like they have learned something new or plays or sings something better than they did when they arrived.

I expect a student to schedule time in his/her week to practice since my most successful students excel in their school bands and go on to perform with local youth orchestras and other ensembles. I will remind students that they will get back what they put into it.

Listed below is my expertise level on the instruments I feel comfortable teaching.

Flute: beginner to advanced (all ages)
Clarinet: beginner to advanced (all ages)
Oboe: beginner to intermediate (all ages)
Saxophone: beginner to advanced (all ages)
Piano: beginner only (children and adults)
Singing: beginner to advanced (all ages)
Celtic harp: beginner to intermediate (all ages)
Music theory: beginner to advanced (all ages)

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have music, piano, CD player, musical instruments and a music stand available at the studio.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I travel with my instruments and some music but not all. If there is a piece of music at my studio which the student is interested in looking at, I will make arrangements to bring it with me to your next lesson.

Students at home should have an instrument, a good music stand and a quiet area set aside for the lesson. Pets should be kept in an area other than where the lesson will be taught.

*** Specialties ***
Broadway, showtunes, pop, classical and jazz

This is my primary instrument and the one I am the most excited about. I've been teaching saxophone for a year and my students have gone on to perform in area-all-state competitions and concerts in the NY area. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play a few folk songs and as time goes on you'll be able to read treble clef. I specialize in classical, typically use Rubank or Jump Right In books, and have the following tools available for your lessons: metronome, and laptop. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Robin
Hi, there! My name is Robin L. and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2014 and have loved helping my students learn to play their band instrument for solo competitions, or just for fun! I went to Roberts Wesleyan College and earned a degree in music education (K-12) in 2016. I'm an energetic and fun person. I believe that with hard work and dedication, you can accomplish anything; but I also believe that the process should be fun! I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

As a concert saxophonist, Jonathan has performed around the country with repertoire from composers such as J. S. Bach, Handel, Mozart, Ibert and von Koch.

Whether a beginner or a progressing student of the saxophone, Jonathan's students receive personalized instruction based on their needs and goals. Students are encouraged to excel in areas including technical proficiency, articulation, tone imagination, tone color, and music theory. Students who have never played an instrument will learn how to read music, write their own exercises, and effectively practice.

About Jonathan
A newcomer to the Bay Area, Johnny is an active music student and performing concert saxophonist. He holds the chair of Alto Saxophonist in the Zēlos Saxophone Quartet, an actively performing chamber ensemble, as well as first chair Alto Saxophone in the SJSU Wind Ensemble.

Johnny’s beginner students learn the basics of music theory as well as the basics of the saxophone. New students can expect to learn how to properly assemble a saxophone and play a tune in the first lesson. More advance students, such as those in middle/high school, will learn the essentials of musicality and begin learning standard repertoire. All students are expected to practice and prepare a minimum amount for each lesson in order to progress. Johnny will work with students based on their needs, and will help solve any problems they may face.

Johnny has
received several awards, including the grand prize for the 2017 San Jose Music Study Club Competition and first-place for the 2017-18 MTNA State/Regional Chamber Ensemble Competitions with the Zēlos Quartet.

I have been teaching saxophone lessons to students of all abilities for five years, and I have been playing the saxophone for thirteen years. I teach both classical and jazz, and I cater my lesson plans to the specific needs, goals, and learning styles of every student. I have studied with Taimur Sullivan and Timothy McAllister during my undergraduate years at the Bienen School of Music. I recently represented Illinois in the MTNA Young Artist Competition and was one of 25 young saxophonists in North America to be selected for the semifinals of their Collegiate Solo Competition. I am able to teach instrument fundamentals, repertoire, sight reading, music theory, ear training, basics of improvisation, and much more. I look forward to working with you!

About Aidan
Aidan is a classical saxophonist and music educator. He has performed in venues across the United States as a concerto soloist, chamber musician, and ensemble member.

In only his second year of undergraduate study, he was named the Winner of the 2015 Illinois Young Artist Woodwind Performance Competition through the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). He went on to be named the Honorable Mention in the East Central Division round. For two consecutive national conferences (2016, 2018) organized by the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA), he was selected as one of twenty-five young saxophone soloists to perform and compete in the Semifinals.

His primary collegiate instructors are Taimur Sullivan and Timothy McAllister. In addition, he has played in masterclasses for Steven Banks, Jérôme Laran, Clifford Leaman, Brandon Qua
rles, and Nikita Zimin. Finally, he has taken supplementary lessons from Vincent David, Carrie Koffman, Chien-Kwan Lin, Otis Murphy, Zachary Shemon, and Kenneth Tse.

Since 2014, he has maintained a private saxophone studio of his own, helping area students improve their craft. He has been able to quickly pinpoint opportunities for improvement and learning, and effectively communicates those ideas in frameworks suited for the age and ability of each student. His students have been accepted into collegiate music schools across the United States.

He has performed world premieres and is working on the collaborative development of new creative projects. Aidan has been a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) since 2015 and recently participated in the American Saxophone Academy (ASA).

I focus on making sounds from the instrument and getting the basics of wetting the reed, using just the mouth piece, and demonstrating different capabilities and sounds from my own playing. Once the basics are learned I move on to simple pieces together and get them used to hearing melodies through the saxophone.

About Matthew
I am a graduate student pursuing an MFA in Electronic Music and received my dual degree BM from Berklee College of Music in Composition and Electronic Production and Design.

I am an alto/tenor saxophonist and clarinetist, performing in symphonic wind ensembles, orchestras, and musical theatre pit ensembles. I also sing in concert choirs as a baritone/bass, and have played lead and supportive roles on stage in musical theatre shows.

As a composer I write choral, chamber, musical theatre and electroacoustic music. My other works include sonic installation pieces that encompass recording, sampling, mixing, surround sound, and production. I have also written music and created sound effects for several video games and trailers.

I can teach composition, orchestration, and basics in mixing, production, and sound design. In instrumental
studies I teach classical, contemporary, or musical theatre pit orchestra, and musical theatre training for voice and/or acting.

I love passing on what I've learned while I've been at school! While I might be young, I have taken lessons with the great jazz saxophonist and arranger Charles "Chip" McNeill and the world renowned classical saxophone teacher and performer Debra Richtmeyer so I hope to pass down the love of the instrument that they've instilled in me. I'll cover the basics of the saxophone, as well as clarinet and flute if interested, and some great exercises and methods that my teachers have me do in order to improve. But in the end, I'll let the student decide what they want to learn. I'm open to many music styles and will try to lead each student in the right direction.

About Adam
Hello future students!
My name is Adam and I am currently a junior studying jazz saxophone at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. While I might be young, I do have teaching experience with middle school band. I hope to pass on what I've learned from my teachers, Charles McNeill and Debra Richtmeyer, two world-renowned professionals. My main instrument is saxophone, however, I do double on both clarinet and flute and have a background in piano as well! I would love to teach any beginner or intermediate level students over the summer and grow along with you musically!

As a teacher I have 2 main goals; that I get the student to love learning music/the instrument from me and that the student's goals are met no matter what level. I have been playing saxophone for 24 years. I have studied every form of saxophone playing and played all kinds of music on the instrument and bring that experience and awareness into our lesson.

About Mike
My name is Mike F. I am a saxophonist who also makes a living as a pianist and songwriter. I started playing the saxophone at age 10 and learned from the best. I have released 3 albums under my artist-name MikeMRF. My sophomore album, Mob Music, went to #1 on the iTunes Jazz Albums Chart, while my most recent EP went to #11. I have had my music played on U.S. and international radio, and charted on Billboard Most Added and Billboard Heatseekers. I have played with jazz greats and toured both the U.S. as well as Japan.

I love teaching piano, saxophone, clarinet and flute and working with students of all ages and levels. I am equally as happy teaching a beginner from scratch as I am teaching a college student looking to get help with a certain aspect of playing.

Mike made me feel so at ease with this gentle demeanor and patient approach to teaching. To hear him play is inspiring since he has the confidence of someone who has been performing in front of audiences for many years. He has already explained jazz piano in a way that de-mystified a lot of things I never thought I could do myself. Now I understand exactly what techniques I should be practicing to level up as a pianist. This guy can really play anything though, from rock to jazz to R&B to straight pop, which makes him a perfect instructor no matter what style you are interested in. Highly recommend his lessons.
