About Jesse

I'm currently not taking beginner students on voice/singing, guitar, bass, drums, piano, and ukulele. I highly recommend my studio partners Melissa though. Please check out her profile:

My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Once or twice a year we'll also stage a larger event off site for more individual students and bands classes to perform.
Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Music Stands

*A P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console and Yamaha organ

*A MicroKorg Synthesizer

*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, Saxophone, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

Mrs. Krystmas is awesome. My daughter was really intimidated trying to learn to play the flute for 5th grade band. When she started, she could get it to make a sound at all. She talked about "hating band" and how she couldn't wait until the end of the year so she could quit. Mrs. Krystmas turned all of that around in 5 lessons. Now she looks forward to going to both her lessons and band at school. She asked me sign her up for more lessons! Thanks Mrs. Krystmas!

Classic Saxophone instruction taught to improve all aspects of performance from concert band to jazz improvisation. Concentration includes scales, arpeggios, reading, applied theory and playing with others

About Anthony
I was originally trained on Saxophone, Voice and basic piano skills at the Chicago Conservatory of Music. My professional experience has been working as a traveling house band for the Marriott Hotels as well as the Sheraton Hotels and the Ted Allen Agency in Chicago as well as numerous types of classic rock, fusion rock, jazz, jazz standards and fusion jazz and wedding bands. I'm currently studying at Miracosta Community College to complete my music degree to advance to a 4 year University in Music Education. I play saxes in the Miracosta Oceanside Jazz Orchestra (MOJO) and also play with the Collective a smaller jazz ensemble taught by Steve Torok as time permits. I have taught before and after school music classes with children from 8 to 13. Our focus has been elementary training incorporating basic music theory, harmony and rhythm as
well as instruments such as clarinet and flute as well as sax.

Ive had a terrific multi year set of lessons w Tony and he is flexible, patient, experienced and teaches where ‘I’m at’ not where a lesson book would rule or dictate.

Tony often hears things in my tone and technique that he then works into my lessons.

He can prepare a plan or cover what you want: he seems to enjoy the experience of teaching. But if you want to improve, Tony will help you get where you want to go

I am a beginning Tenor Sax student and a senior citizen. I have played other instruments years ago, but never a woodwind instrument. Ian has been a marvelous instructor for me. Although I had never picked up a sax until December 2014, he already has taught me how to play several simple tunes and a number of scales. His patience and sensitivity to the appropriate pace is impecable. He also keeps me informed of other activities - concerts, recordings, community events to reinforce my interest. I would recommend Ian as a music teacher to anyone without reservation or hesitation.

Experienced teacher of 5 years, specializing in beginner/intermediate saxophone student! All ages welcome. Accommodate to the learning styles of each individual. Will provide organized assignments and lesson goals at the end of each lesson for the next week's lesson. I try to provide extensive knowledge in saxophone and match with the music theory to allow for creativity and art to grow with the student. I would love to work with you!

About Patrick
I am a sophomore student at Florida State University. I study saxophone performance and composition and have been involved in the Symphonic band for 3 semesters.

I am extremely flexible to any student's learning style. I will offer positive reinforcement and constructive criticism where necessary, while making sure that it is never a negative environment. I am able to pass down knowledge in classical and jazz music for the saxophone, and will provide repertoire, etudes, worksheets and exercises for any student. The curriculum I offer will be flexible to the speed and nature of the student who is studying, however I always like to leave a foundation with the basics while allowing for students to see the fun in the instrument.

A typical lesson will begin with a review of the previous lessons, questions about practicing habits and time spe
nt in ensembles at school. Then we will spend the first part of the lesson working on fundamentals, typically on sound and technique. Then we will work on music that is fun to play while making the student more proficient.

I teach all types of students, specializing in beginners and intermediate players. I can come to your home or provide a space to work in at FSU's college of music, with help getting free parking for the lesson. I invite parents to stay with their child or go do errands or relax and watch TV! I also can use the TakeLessons online service of lessons at almost any time of day, even if you felt like a 3am jam session was what your weekend needed!

Music is something I believe is incredibly useful for anyone to apply to their lives and would love to do my part in helping you reach your goals. I look forward to hearing from you and learning about everything you want to become as a musician!

I love working with brand new beginners all the way seasoned players who might be prepping for music college. I like to keep an fun atmosphere around the lesson and try to find out what drives my students.

We'll work through pieces from school and expand into topics such as improvisation, reading, music theory, and finding inspiration from great players. I have a jazz background, and love working with aspiring jazz musicians as well.

About Steve
I'm a saxophonist, pianist, arranger & songwriter. I graduated from Berklee College of Music with a Professional Music Degree, and currently run a sheet music startup called NiceChart. I have been a Music Director for Middle School and High School Bands and also have over 15 years experience teaching privately. Private lessons allow a better transfer of knowledge and I love watching students progress!

I have been in touring bands, jazz bands, wedding bands, funk bands, and pop bands. Fun Fact: I was even once in a bossa nova Guns n' Roses jazz trio called Guns n' Nova. You could say I've played a lot of different styles.

I teach my clients in my comfortable home teaching studio in Clairemont, San Diego. I work with beginner and intermediate piano students and all levels for saxophone. I'm open to students of any age and music
al goals.

In my music career I've performed with Steffan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band) and Ed Robertson (Bare Naked Ladies) and played in bands that have opened for Guster, Blues Traveler, and The Wailers.

Some of the musical styles I regularly teach: Pop, Blues, Jazz, Funk, Soul, R&B, and Classical.

I started taking saxophone lessons from Steve in Fall 2017 after not picking up the horn in 10 years. He is very knowledgeable in theory and technique and has been extremely beneficial in helping me get my chops back up par. In these lessons I did not have much direction for Steve on what I'd like to accomplish but that wasn't an issue for him as he was able to make each lesson worth while by shedding light on harmony theory and creating lines as well as different techniques to focus on to improve my playing.

I just bought an additional 10 lessons and had my first lesson of 2018 with Steve this May and am very happy with my decision. He is giving me great feedback on charts I am playing and really giving me a sounding board to ask questions and grow as a musician within this instrument (alto). I personally have a fairly solid foundation in music theory but if you are new to music theory Steve can break that down for you step by step.

I look forward to continuing my lessons with Steve and am already seeing the benefits of having a great teacher.

I work with the student to develop a curriculum based on their musical interests and my own teaching pedagogy. I strongly feel that for musicians to own their education, they must have a say in what they play. Assigning method books and mindless etudes to practice doesn't have nearly the same effect asking them "Ok, what kind of music do YOU like? What do you want to PLAY? What do you want to LEARN?".

I believe that students learn best when they are invested in a subject, and the best way to get them invested is to individually get to know each one, speak to them on their level, and get them playing music they're interested in.

About Jon
I'm a professional performer, educator, and recording artist. I received my Masters in Music from New Mexico State University, and my BA and BMA from the College of Wooster in Ohio.

Students can expect to improve their technique and performing repertoire within a matter of weeks. We will collaborate to find music that he or she is interested in, plus work on exercises that will build technique and sound quality. It doesn’t matter WHAT you’re playing, but HOW you play it.

I’ve been a musician for over 20 years and played in a wide variety of settings. In lessons, I’ll draw from that experience to help students achieve their musical goals.

As a performing artist, I’ve played in classic big bands, small jazz combos, and R&B style horn sections, just to name a few. I’m passionate about classical music, jazz, R&B, and funk, but good
technique is good technique, and a proficient musician should and can jump from one style to another with ease.

I've been teaching private music lessons for nearly 30 years. I taught public school music (beginning band) and then spent 10 years at a university training future music teachers. I run an active studio, direct music at a church and perform regularly. I have a PhD in education with an emphasis in music.

About Phil
I've been a professional musician and music teacher for nearly 30 years. I have a Bachelors and Masters degree in music and PhD in education, with an emphasis in music. I've taught students from the ages of 5 to 72.

I've had a successful performing career and have played twice at Carnegie Hall and in the National Conservatory of Music in Ecuador, just to name a few venues. I have recorded music, won song-writing competitions, and have had music published. While I still actively direct music at a thriving church, my passion is in teaching others the love of music.

I believe in teaching and focussing on the fundamentals of music, as it is often overlooked by many teachers. Once the basic skills are learned, musicians can apply the same skill sets to other literature.

I look forward to helping you develop your talent.
