My first instrument and my first love. Started at age 10 and was teaching by age 15

About Randall
My love of music and musical talent was discovered when I was just five years old. An uncle gave me a plastic recorder and, without lessons or help from anyone, I was playing melodies within days. Soon after I started taking private lessons on Saxophone and Clarinet.
I played my first paying job at age 14.
When I was 15, my private instructor, asked me if I would be interested in teaching. He put me on the County list of private instructors and and soon I had my own thriving studio of Sax and Clarinet students. From that time on, I have almost continuously been involved in music education.
Though I had listened to the rock "guitar gods" of the 60's I never became interested the guitar until, at the age of 15, I first heard Maestro Andres Segovia through his televised master classes. About the same time, I was amazed by the chord
melody genius of jazz artists like George Van Eps, Joe Pass, and Bucky Pizzarelli. It was then I realized that the guitar could be an "orchestra."
In the small town where I grew up, there were no guitar teachers so I studied with outstanding Guitarist Ed McGuire. Later, I studied formally with several renowned professors of guitar, including Bruce Holzman at FSU and Randy Reed, a professor at Duke University in Durham North Carolina.
I have also performed in Master Classes for Classical Guitarists Atigoni Goni and Dimitri Diatchenko.
Before making North Florida my home, I toured and played throughout the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast in a variety of venues and styles from Rock to Jazz to R&B.
Even after settling down I have stayed active in the music business, playing and teaching. I continue to work regularly performing solo, or in ensembles throughout Florida from Tallahassee to Jacksonville.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid back teacher who prefers to motivate my students by instilling my love of, and enthusiasm for, music in them rather than using any kind of "scare" tactics. I had a very few "knuckle rapper" style teachers over the years and found them to be very unmotivating.
A large percentage of the progress a student makes happens between the lessons. The more they practice, the faster they improve.
I also believe in building a solid foundation that my students can build upon. A good teacher teaches a student how to teach themselves.
On guitar, I encourage, but don't insist on, my students learning to read music. Some styles of guitar do not require it, but I do mention the gigs I have gotten over the years because I could read.
On all instruments, I am a big believer in great technique, musicianship and improvisational skills.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio is in back of the house as an addition. It has its own separate entrance and is approx 160 sq feet. Well lit and with heat and air.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide a music stand if needed. Students must have their own instrument. They will need to get their own books, though I do provide much supplemental material.

*** Specialties ***
Jazz, Classical, Blues, Flamenco

I can teach the following members of the saxophone family: alto, tenor, baritone and soprano. While the saxophone is predominately known for its use in jazz & big band it also has it's place in rock n roll as well. I can teach all of these styles. If you're interested in performing or playing professionally, I recommend learning all the saxophone types as it will be a great benefit to your career. Most beginners start out on alto.

About Jason
I provide private music lessons for guitar, bass, saxophone, music theory and songwriting. I have been teaching for over seven years. I combine my passion for teaching and music business expertise to help students achieve their goals. There are many lesson options available including at my studio in Bristol CT, online or at your location. I work with all of my students and parents to create customized teaching plans based on students learning styles, interests and goals. I am available to students outside of lesson time 7 days a week. I provide performance, writing, purchase and music recommendations and take an active interest in each of my students learning. Lesson times are exactly as stated. I allow extra time in between students so as to ensure no overlaps and everyone gets their allotted time.

I try to develop versatility and wel
l rounded musicians no matter the skill or age level. Each student attends lessons for different reasons.Students are encouraged to explore all genres of music and I believe in exposing them to a wide variety of styles and methods. I also encourage students, if interested to write original material. There are no restrictions when it comes to music and I incorporate both old school and contemporary methods into my teaching. Students will learn first hand how what they are learning applies to the real world, including song performance from their favorite artists. I strongly encourage all students to develop an individual personal sense of style when it comes to music performance.

Since I started playing at age 11, I have been fortunate enough to study with some prolific musicians including: UNT sax professor Brad Lelei, Grammy nominated saxophonist Myron Walden, and world renowned bass player Reggie Workman. I currently study saxophone at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in NYC. In my lessons we'll have fun while focusing on your goals. Through practice and the materials I provide, you will notice a dramatic increase in your musical abilities. See you soon!

About Alexander
At my lessons, I use the experience and knowledge that I have acquired from over 10 years of playing and studying music to teach students how to take their playing to the next level and reach their goals.

I attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, TX, and am now one semester shy from graduating from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, a conservatory in New York City.

I find the best way to learn is in a fun, stress-free environment where the instructor pays close attention to the needs of their students. I believe in cultivating an appreciation for jazz and other styles of music, paying close attention to detail, and building a strong foundation through focused practice.

With most of my music students, we focus on several key areas to ensure success of overall technique and knowledge: WARM-UPs, SCALES, MUSIC THEORY, SIGHT-READING, and PREPARED SONGS. I tailor my approach and style to each student. Although I'm very detail-oriented with lessons and followup, I'm constantly in search of finding FUN ways to make sure the student is enjoying the journey. I also prefer to work on a song that the STUDENT wants to learn. It's music, and it should be fun!

Please review the rest of my profile and send me any questions or concerns you may have. If I don't think I can be the best teacher for you, I will gladly refer you to someone else on Takelessons or elsewhere.

I've been a lifel
ong musician, and love finding unique and fun ways to motivate my students. I've worked with most styles of music before, and arranged music for many as well, so I'm very comfortable helping students with a variety of disciplines and interests. My professional experience in both the civilian and military music communities has given me an open-minded yet direct approach to WHAT you should learn, and HOW to develop each student's individual skills. I'm able to teach most students to an advanced level.

All styles; soprano, alto, tenor, baritone

About Darrell
Why these lessons are different:
- Formally trained conductor/composer/producer
- Individual or group session options including full band production
- A long roster of satisfied clients
- Broad base of musical styles (rock, classical, jazz, blues, metal, bluegrass, theater, big band, symphonic, pop, punk, country, march, gospel, avant-garde...)
- Over 20 yrs teaching experience and work with recognized professionals including work in some of the top-rated private schools in the United States

Instrument-specific instruction:
- Voice
- Guitar [Spanish, acoustic, electric]
- Electric Bass
- Piano/Keyboard
- Woodwinds [specializing in saxophones]
- Percussion
- Brass & Bowed Strings [performance preparation only]

My process is based on (but does not adhere strictly to) the Classical approach to Western tonal har
mony, shares the basic tenets of the Suzuki method, and asks that the students develop certain fundamentals of technique and theory. In my experience, this structure creates the strongest foundation for pupils to build the rest of their musical lives on, whether professionally or solely for personal enjoyment. All of my students are on the fast track to studying music theory. Whatever level they are at when I start with them, I guide their efforts into bringing the students up to a certain level of comprehension regarding the mathematical aspects of music and how it relates to their instruments. This understanding of theoretical principles of sound allows the students to play any style of music they wish, no matter how their tastes may change throughout their lives.

yesterday was my first vocal lesson with Darrell. he is definitely one cool dude. My first impression is that he is very thorough. I like that we are starting from the ground up learning fundamentals. it is noteworthy that I am blind. I was amazed at how much Darrell knew and was able to impart in just 45 minutes. I'm really looking forward to next week!

My saxophone chops are wide and varied, just like my clarinet palette. I have played alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones throughout my four years at Elizabethtown College. My experience with them comes from ensembles and pit orchestras. I have played reed books that include saxophone for three pits: Guys and Dolls, 42nd Street, and Company. I have participated in jazz bands for years.

I believe that I have a unique take on saxophone because this is an instrument I am proficient in that I had taken up solely for my own enjoyment. I would love to have the opportunity to share this with you and cultivate a lesson plan tailored just for you.

About Tamantha
I have recently graduated from Elizabethtown College with a Bachelor's of Arts in Music. My primary was clarinet. Alongside clarinet, though, I studied saxophone, guitar, piano, and voice. Genres that I have studied include: classical, jazz, funk, rock, dixie, rag, and klezmer.

A majority of my classes have been in Music Therapy, and I plan to continue that journey at Marywood University. That being said, my background in education is different than that of some of my peers with a Bachelor's of Music in Music Education. I make sure to allow students to grow alongside the instrument and discover their passions their way. We will work together, cultivate a plan based on strengths and needs, and work towards a co-created overall goal together.

I have had two students in the past: one in high school and another in my last semesters of under
grad. The student I had in high school is now entering her senior year as a clarinet primary, double majoring in Performance and Early Education. My other student is still primary age.

I look forward to meeting you! Musicianship is always within reach.

Hello! I am a Atlanta-based professional saxophonist and have been teaching for 8 years. Lessons with beginners focus on establishing solid fundamentals with air support, embouchure, and saxophone technique. For more seasoned players, I emphasize advanced techniques, developing a personal sound, and exploring the saxophone repertoire. All students also develop their core musicianship skills such as sight reading, ear training, and basic theory and interpretation. I am an adaptive teacher and will always strive to incorporate interests of the student with the goals of my personal curriculum. My students have seen great success and have dominated festival band sections, won placements in competitions, and even entered college music programs! Ready to begin the fun? Send me a message!

I have watched all of Joshua's videos and I have to say he has great control over the instrument. He has a fantastic grasp on musicality has a beautiful interpretation on every piece he performs. Joshua would be a fantastic teacher for those who are starting out, or who would like to pursue a professional career as a saxophonist. One who studies with him would learn how to interpret the pieces they will perform as well as how to make musical decisions to interest the listener.
