Experienced guitar teacher of 22 years available for eager beginner and intermediate students of all ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of rhythm, chords, knowledge of the instrument and proper hand skills. I specialize in pop and rock and typically use songs the students choose to help them develop their skills.

About Athena
About Me

If you can recognize your favorite song when you hear it, you already have what it takes to be a great musician!

MY PROMISE TO YOU:
1. Your lesson will always be geared toward what YOU want to learn, and if it seems like we are working on something that doesn't match that, I will always take the time to make clear why what we are doing will have you be able to play what you want.
2. You already have every skill you need to be a great performer, and my job is just to steer the ship in the right direction to have that happen. All I am ever doing in a lesson is making sure that we are moving you in the ultimate direction that you want to be going musically.
3. I will do everything I know how to do to make sure that what I have learned that will benefit you becomes something you have mastered. If I could take th
e "computer chip" in my head and put it in yours, we would do that. Study with me and you will get the next best thing!
4.If I say something that isn't clear, or isn't useful to you, I will ALWAYS re-explain, or say it a different way, until it is useful to you and something you know how to use for your benefit on your instrument.
5. If you have a practice schedule set up with me, and for any reason you do not have time to practice or get an assignment done, I GOT IT! You can always tell me, because I've been there and I know. Music Lessons are NOT school, and I will never act like they are.

OK, now for the credentials:

MY EDUCATION

I learned how to read music at 4 years old, before I had even learned to read English. If I can do that, anyone can do that given the right set of elements.
1. I started singing at three, piano lessons at nine, began teaching myself guitar at twelve and I have never stopped playing and learning since then.
2. I earned a B.A in Music from Towson University and graduated Magna cum Laude with a Major in Jazz/Commercial Piano Performance and a Minor in Opera.
3. I made my stage performing debut in a solo role at six, and I have never stopped performing since then. I wrote my first song, all by myself, at eleven and have composed over 1000 pieces since then.
4. I have studied brain science and practical neurology for fifteen years as part of my continuing education.

MY EXPERIENCE

In addition to my extensive study of the piano, I have had many other valuable experiences as a musician and teacher, including but not limited to the following:

1. I have been a choral singer for twenty three years, and during that time toured Italy, sang at St. Martin of Tours Church in Los Angeles for fifteen of those years, and worked on mastering just about every form of sacred choral and gospel music.

2. As a soloist, began performing professionally in 1988 and have done numerous performances of my own compositions around Southern California. I also have had songs of mine pitched to major artists in Nashville and currently compose both contemporary music and feature songs for film and television.

3. I developed a method of curing tone deafness, and authored a course that teaches this to anyone whether they are a trained singer or beginner. I also authored a second course specifically for karaoke singers to learn stage presence and better performance skills.

4. I have been teaching for twenty years, working with students from 3 to 78 years old at every level of musical experience. I have taught not only music performing and instrumental technique, but song-writing, arranging, and the tricky task of singing while playing an instrument to accompany one's self. Believe me, this is a skill that DOES take a separate set of lessons to master, but every student who studies it with me does!

In short, if it's music, or even music-related, I've done it and I can teach it and I can figure out the best method to have your brain master it!

My Specialties:
Working with kids and young people in a SAFE environment to learn their instrument
Rhythm, and understanding why it is your ticket to musical mastery
How to use your own brain to be your own best teacher (when I'm not there in a lesson with you!)
Pop, Classical, Gospel, Rock, Musical Theater,

Your BRAIN is your greatest musical asset, and I have spent the past twenty-five years learning how to make the musical brain easy for everyone.

I've been a musician since I was in the cradle, and I
learned to read music before I could read English! Over the past twenty years of teaching piano, voice and guitar I have learned how to use your brain, and the basic musical skills you ALREADY have to help you turn yourself into a great musician and performer.

If you can tap your foot along with a song, and you can recognize Mary Had a Little Lamb, you've got what it takes. My specialty is taking these simple skills you already have and using them to teach you EVERYTHING you want to know how to do on your instrument. I also teach combined
lessons so that you can learn more than one instrument in your course of study if that is what you choose.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student provides piano in their home for piano lessons. Voice students provide a recording device to record their lesson for their practice. Guitar students provide their guitar, any amps, cables, anything else they need for their rig. All students provide any CD's or mp3's they are working with during study. They pay for all books needed.

*** Specialties ***
Beginner level through advanced in kid songs, pop, rock, gospel, contemporary Christian, Broadway and classical. Emphasis on rhythm and technique. Lessons specialize in using knowledge of brain neuroscience practical applications in hearing, learning, reading, practicing and performing music.

About Randal
Love of music inspired to learn bass and guitar over 15 years ago. When I began teaching my young daughter guitar I realized how much I also love to teach. For the past 3 years I have been blessed to be able to combine these two passions into one.
Originally self taught, I have recently studied
bass, guitar, and theory at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music. Coming from a self taught background, I fully understand the importance of a solid foundation. In the beginning of my playing, after being uninspired by formal lessons, I chose to branch out on my own. This decision definitely slowed my musical growth. Having to fend for yourself is always more difficult than having a guiding hand helping you along. I enjoy passing on the knowledge it took me years to accumulate.
My musical influences range from Rock to Reggae, Blues to Folk.
Some of my favorite players include Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, David Gilmour, Bob Marley, Family Man, Glen Phillips, and Bradley Nowell. Although the bass guitar was my first instrument, and learning reggae bass is the reason I began, the acoustic guitar is my instrument of choice. I am constantly amazed at the musical range it can provide. From beautiful finger picked melodies, to it's raw percussive qualities.
However, I find equal enjoyment sharing my love of both instruments.

*** Lesson Details ***
My mission is to provide the foundation, through a relaxed and patient approach, for each individual student to reach their own maximum potential. We will cover basic techniques and theory, but we will learn how these are relative to actually playing music that the student is interested in. Let's face it, students want to play music. They are not taking lessons to learn what a pentatonic scale is, even though they will probably use it to play their favorite solo. Many beginners stop playing because they get caught up in the journey, and lose focus on the destination. If these techniques and exercises are shown to be relative to actually playing music, most students can't stop practicing, instead of viewing practice as work, or boring.
Each students' lesson is designed specifically for the individual. Handouts will be provided to offer support and reference, but the students desire and willingness to practice on their own will dictate how fast we move along.
The ultimate goal for me is to provide a relaxed atmosphere where students are having fun doing what they love. There will be plenty of time to learn complex chord shapes and theories. I simply want to create players who once they have started, will never stop playing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I am available for lessons given in your home or mine. I provide small recording equipment, and drum machine. Each student will be able to record a cd of their playing to help in the learning process.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Recording equipment, drum machine, amps, and lesson plans. Student provides own instrument. Although I have provided instruments in certain situations.

*** Specialties ***
Rock, Reggae,Blues, and Fingerstyle.

About Nathaniel
Hello my name is Nate. I have been playing guitar since my early teenage years, and I have always had a great passion for music. I have played guitar for two different bands and have also done solo and independent work on the guitar. I took guitar lessons for four years and I am currently at McHenry Country College working towards my associate's degree in fine arts and music. I have taught guitar for almost three years now and I am looking to expand my horizons! I am only twenty-one years old and I still remember what it feels like to be someone first starting out on guitar. I have worked with many different age groups and musical genre's when teaching, and I know that I can help you get to the skill level you hope to achieve on guitar.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are generally plan-based around the pre-existing skill level of e
ach individual student. I will give the student exercises and assign practice "homework" so the student can achieve what they want to learn, as fast as they want to learn it. I am laid back and willing to teach at any pace desired by any student. After six months a beginner on guitar will have learned all the basic chords, a few cover songs of their choice, exercises to help improve speed and stamina while playing, and the knowledge of how to use the chords they have learned to create their own songs.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Basement studio, guitars, amps, mics, pa system, bass guitars, street parking.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching the playing of acoustic guitar, punk-rock guitar, alternative rock guitar, classic rock guitar, metal guitar, and pop rock guitar. I also specialize in teaching song-writing and soloing. I teach the classical modes and key signatures on the guitar and show how to implement them with tempo and time signatures into songwriting. I know many cover songs and am willing to learn more and show others how to play them.

Two thumbs up!

Nate’s knowledge and interest in guitar is evident. He explains key signatures, basic music theory, and chord progression in a way that is easy to understand. Nate is very patient and understanding and he is willing to teach just about anything you wish to learn. I’ve already learned so much in the short time I have taken lessons with him. I’d recommend taking lessons with Nate to anyone and everyone!

Nate knows music, and knows how to teach it.

I have been in a band with Nate for almost three years now. He knows the guitar like it's a part of him. When I first picked up the guitar I was amazed at how quickly he was able to teach me, and at how quickly I learned. I drum for Nate's band, but I wanted to learn guitar so I could help with the writing of new songs. Nate showed me all I needed to know and more. I no longer take lessons with him because I gained all the knowledge of guitar I needed to. Nate was very good at relating the instrument to me in a way that I understood, and showing me not only how to play certain things, but why they were played that way. I would recommend him to anyone first starting out on the guitar.

I have been playing guitar since the age of 11. I have basic music theory training and years of experience as a guitar teacher. I develop a lot of my own materials based on my student's needs/preferences.

About Jack
Hello students and parents, music has been a big part of my life since before I could walk. Starting in third grade, and continuing through college, I have had 15 years of experience with singing. I was always eager to make music and to grow as a musician, which is why I decided to study music education at Eastern Illinois University. Due to the limited number of teaching jobs available I decided to change programs and study counseling. However I made it a priority to find ways to keep music as a big part of my life.

Performing has been a big part of my life for years. Starting in Elementary school I have been in several musicals and plays. I know what it is like to sing in front of large crowds both as a group and as a soloist. One of my favorite groups was an acapella/vocal jazz group during my high school years. My hope is to pass o
n both my passion for performance and the practical skills needed by every performer.

I have been teaching private guitar and singing lessons for the past 9 years. I have had approximately 10 students during that time, ranging in age from 11 to 60 years old. I have a fun and laid back approach to teaching. Music is meant to be enjoyed and I want my students to have fun as they learn and grow as musicians. While I have some basic skills for all my students to learn, the primary focus of lessons is for students to set and attain their own goals.

I know what it is like to be a student. I took private voice lessons for 7 years, including 3 years of classical training at Eastern Illinois University. I took four years of private guitar lessons, and one year of electrical bass lessons. As a teacher I use my experience as a student to enhance the learning environment for my students.

One of my favorite things is writing and recording my own songs. I will offer the opportunity for any of my students to develop songwriting skills and even record their creations.

There is no greater joy than that of creating music. Come create music with me and you'll be a better musician for it. I look forward to meeting you and helping you reach your goals.

*In Song*
-Jack G.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am highly adaptive as an instructor. I will allow my students to bring their own materials or I will create custom materials designed to develop their skills and help them reach their goals. A lot of my custom exercises are designed to build the flexibility, strength, and agility of my students as musicians.

After several months of lessons I aim for my students to master the basic skills, and to be focused on personal goals in their development as a musician. I use audio recording to mark and measure student progress so you can hear how you have improved and find new ways to get better.

Lessons can be as laid back or intense as you want. Practice is key to improvement. The more you practice the more you improve. I realize that life can be busy, so if you can't get the practice in I will still work with you and help you get as much as possible out of our lesson time. However, I will always encourage my students to practice regularly.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Keyboard, Acoustic Guitars, Electric Bass, Electric Guitar, Recording software.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Keyboard, Guitars, Bass, and Mandolin.

*** Specialties ***
For singing and guitar I design a lot of my own materials. I have strength and coordination exercises for the guitar, and I have vocal exercises designed to increase vocal strength and confidence.

I messed up the time for the lesson and we showed up two hours early - Jack was available and took us when we arrived! He took the time to ask questions about history, experience and interests and tailored the first lesson to those answers. He is engaging and very encouraging. He provides support material and precise instruction on items to practice between lessons. My daughter (Marissa) left the lesson excited to continue. Her comment was "Best birthday present ever! I can't wait to go back!" We will definitely continue working with Jack!

I have been playing guitar for 15 years. I make lesson plans based on each individual, so I don't teach every one the same boring songs or use the same regiment with everyone. I want to teach you what YOU want to learn.

About Jeremie
I'm a self taught guitarist who has been playing for nearly 20 years. I have played professionally in numerous bands and ensembles ranging from jazz to folk to rock, and I've been writing music for the same length of time. I currently perform with one of my students from TakeLessons named Mackenzie O'Brien.

I graduated from Columbia College Chicago in May 2014 with a BA in Music Composition. I studied under composers: Drew Baker, Kenn Kumpf, Ilya Levinson, and Marcos Balter. I've performed and worked with members from the groups, Del Niente and Chicago's Composer's Collective.

I build my lesson plans around each of my students based on their interests. I'll try to incorporate music they enjoy into their music regime. I keep lessons pretty relaxed, but will challenge a student who is looking for something m
ore difficult. I go at the pace you learn best at!

Bass guitar, ukulele, song-writing, counterpoint, orchestrating, arranging, music theory, and composing are subjects I'm well versed in and love to teach to other people.

I'm experienced with all kinds of music software, such as: Pro Tools, Logic, Garage Band, Cubase, FL Studio, Finale, Sibelius. If you want to learn how to write, record, mix, and master your own music, there's never been a better time to learn.

I've been teaching Guitar Full-Time for 5 years and my students have gone from absolute beginner to live performances at our huge annual events. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play songs from my curriculum 8 cycle guitar/guitar90 method. As time goes on you be eased into chords, strumming, melodies, Rhythm, scales, and you'll be able to play your favorite songs on the guitar. You will develop the skills to join a band if you desire to do so. I specialize in Teaching beginners to intermediate players, Rock, Blues, Lead Guitar, Music Theory, and Christian worship/contemporary. I typically use my own curriculum for beginners, and have the following tools available for your lessons: Music Stands, foot pedals, Roland Cube amps, comfortable Heated/Ac studio, PA system, mixer, Imac, Macbook Pro, Comcast Business Level High Speed Internet, Microphones, Pedal Board, Guitar Stands, Lesson Materials, and more. I love working with students of all ages, experience levels, and ...

About Jon
My life long passions have been for guitar, music, and business. I received my very first guitar at the age of 12 years old and have been studying, playing, and improvising ever since with over 28 years of experience. I have had the honor to train under some of the finest Guitarists in the Chicagoland area: Dave Uhrich, Eric Mantel, Toshi Iseda, and Tom Hess.

I have performed as lead guitarist on worship teams for over 15 years, currently at Kenosha Bible Church. As the lead guitarist of Aural Groove, I recorded under industry pro Michael Charles of Moonlight Studios. As lead singer and guitarist of Manna (an acoustic duo) I recorded under Rex Carroll of Whitecross.

I teach and train in a method I have coined "8 Cycle Guitar". This approach alternates areas of focus each week; like a fitness program. By routinely rotating through t
he 8 cycles of guitar training, the student gains the skill needed to master the instrument quickly and effectively.

My Promise to you, simply put, "You Will Learn to Play the Guitar, period." I will be your own personal Guitar Coach. Look through the pics in my profile. 90% or more of those students started out as absolute beginners. I will help to keep things moving along, keep you motivated, keep you inspired, and keep the lessons fun.

What do I want in return: committed students, students who show up to their lessons, students who will practice a half hour per day or more, 5 to 7 days per week. Students who do not use the words "I can't," but instead use the words "How can I? Please show me."

I am here to teach, train, coach, and mentor you to the best of my ability. If you do the things I request you to do in and outside of your lessons...I personally guarantee you will learn to play the guitar and impress all your friends and family.

Let's start this journey together. You won't regret your decision.

Guitar lessons with me are unique because I focus on the students' needs and interests, whether he/she is looking for a fun approach to music, learning songs they love or more in-depth knowledge of the instrument technique and music theory. I love to teach kids and adults of all ages; I have a seven years experience in the field, I'm a performer and classically trained musician and will love to share music with you.

About Irisley
I'm a professional Guitar and Bass player, and I will be teaching all levels of expertise on Guitar and Piano, I Graduated from the Music Conservatory in Cuba in Classical Guitar. I've been teaching for seven years now to kids and adult looking to learn an instrument or get better as a performer.

Guitar students can expect to improve week to week on their technique, their music theory knowledge and performance abilities. I can teach students to read music and pursue classical excellence, to learn how to play contemporary music using chord sheets, or both depending on the goals and preference of the student.

I look forward to meeting you and helping you to become a better musician!
