My primary goal as a teacher is to present musical material in a way that keeps students excited about what they are learning. Even with absolute beginners, I will have a student playing actual songs that they are interested in as quickly as possible. Along with way I include fundamentals such as scales, strength-building exercises, rudiments of theory, and ear training.
I also use interactive music websites to introduce students to concepts of music theory.

About Chuck

Chuck moved to Portland, Oregon from Gainesville, Florida, where he was a prominent member of the music teaching and performing community for more than 25 years. Originally from Chicago, Chuck completed his BA in Music History and Masters of Music (MM) at the University of Florida. Chuck became ob

I've really enjoyed working with Joel! He has a lot of in-depth knowledge of complex playing and writing techniques, but he's also been great at teaching me (a beginner) the basics. He always has great tips and exercises to work on in between lessons which motivates me to keep practicing. Really nice guy.

Really great guy to work with and learn from! He explains everything well and has come up with great exercises/lessons for us to do. I’m picking guitar up pretty well learning from him. I feel like he’s really helping to set me up to now learn more independently at home

I've been teaching acoustic guitar for 7 years (since I was a teen myself!). Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to read and play from basic tabs, and as time goes on we can work on songs you pick yourself. I generally don't teach guitar students to read sheet music unless they ask; this is because in the "real world" of playing musicians, guitarists rarely use actual sheet music except in a classical setting. I specialize in beginner and intermediate acoustic, pop, country and fingerpicking style. Students should have and bring their own guitar. I will work with students ages 6+, but I recommend waiting until close to age 10 for guitar, as it requires some hand size/strength to reach many chord shapes. Ukulele is a fun option for smaller kids 6+ and I teach that too!

About Maya

- I am classically trained in piano and music theory (attended college for both from the age of 15) and have a strong emphasis on music theory and good technique in my lessons, but I also understand the importance of ear training. I practice with and encourage each student in developing relative pi

"Ben is a great partner in pushing you on your journey toward better guitar playing. He knows theory and proper technique for those looking to improve their skills, and yet he also loves the classics that will get new players strumming and hearing sounds they recognize faster than they would learning from a youtube video. His knowledge, patience and kind disposition (not to mention his punctuality) make him a guitar teacher you want to stay with for years!"

"Dave is both a musician and professional educator, which made him a great guitar teacher for 2 of my daughters, between the ages of 6 and 12. He provided each of them with a binder organized by tabs to hold the songs, theory and notes he brought to each week's lesson. Dave asked the girls about their musical tastes so he could develop lesson plans that held their interest. He is reliable and arrived on time each week. I was so impressed with Dave as a guitar teacher that I recommended him to our local school's after school enrichment program, and I would recommend him for in-home lessons as well."

5 Guitar Songs Mom Will Love

Mother’s Day is a day to show appreciation to the special woman who raised you. But flowers and traditional gifts aren't the only way to show your mom you love her. Here, guitar instructor Matt. K has put together five guitar songs that are perfect to sing for your mom... When it comes to Mother's Day and certain holidays, sometimes us musicians can’t afford the traditional gifts, like a bouquet of flowers, but that doesn't mean we can't give our mothers something special. What be …
