I am very laid back and friendly, and I want you or your child to be as comfortable as possible during our lessons. You or your child will develop confidence and musical intelligence. I will make your lessons fun, enjoyable, and effective. Boredom is not an option! Music is fun... let's keep it that way.

The teaching methods I use will be custom-tailored to your individual needs, personality and specific musical goals. If it's guitar or piano you want to learn, I want to get you playing exactly what you want to be playing as soon as possible. That's what you're here for, and that's what I'm here for. I will make it happen. If it's songwriting that you want to learn, I will help you access that place inside of you that is dying to express itself creatively, and will teach you techniques to harness that energy and translate it successfully into musical expression.

You can expect to learn all the basics of music theory, proper playing techniques, improvisation and spontaneous musical expression, and I will help you develop your "ear" so you can figure out songs you like just by listening to them. This is all about you and your goals, and I want you to achieve them in a fun and engaging way.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room: Upright piano, guitars, amps, keyboard, percussion

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in pop, rock, classical, jazz, blues, folk, fingerstyle (guitar), etc. I also teach improvisation and songwriting, and try to develop the student's ear for figuring out songs they like on their own.

I have extensive experience teaching and playing across many styles including jazz, classical, R&B, funk, rock, folk, improvised music, and more. I approach each student as an individual with their own goals, needs, experience level, and learning style to create a specialized curriculum that helps propel the student towards their best self and enjoy the process at the same time.

About Drew
Aside from an extensive amount of personal and teaching experience in all of these subjects, I genuinely love connecting with students through music to help them reach their personal goals. I believe that my approach towards learning music is deeply rewarding, engaging, and aids brain development. Below is my bio which details my approach and teaching experience.

Drew received his Bachelors of Music in Jazz and Improvisational Music from the University of Nevada Reno and his Masters of Music in Contemporary Improvisation from New England Conservatory. He teaches guitar, piano, songwriting, and composition with an emphasis on intuitive learning, ear training, and music theory. His background includes jazz, classical, rock, blues, reggae, R&B, hip-hop, electronic music, and improvised music. As an educator he has eight years of experien
ce in private studio and has given workshops at the middle school, high school, and college level including his recent outreach work with the Boston Philharmonic to underfunded schools. Was strictly interested in playing classical, nylon string guitar, and was a little nervous because Drew is very proficient and accomplished in Jazz and Improvisational guitar, which is a little outside of my interests.

Drew does a fantastic job at teaching classical guitar, and at the same time introduced me to the more modern world of improvisation guitar, which I now enjoy a lot more than before.

TAKE CONTROL of your guitar. You absolutely have the potential to learn your favorite songs, make music and most importantly have fun!! I can get you there the comfortable way.

I have taught guitar since I was fifteen years old. Teaching is much more than just imparting knowledge, it's also about connecting with people. We will not just play guitar together. I will help you develop your artistic voice and channel your creativity.

Since starting, it has been a joy to work with many different players. I've had young kids playing country music, teenagers learning jazz, adults rediscovering classic rock solos, and retired bluegrass performers just to name a few. I prefer to build lessons around your style and influences.

Beginners:
I will take you from the very beginning concepts, to learning your first chords, strumming rhythms, basic music understanding into playing your favorite songs.

About Jimmy
I have enjoyed music from a very young age and been teaching since the age of fifteen. I have performed as a guitarist and vocalist in solo and duo shows in addition to jazz combo and wedding bands. I love many different kinds of music and I especially connect with classics from the 50's, 60's and 70's. What do you connect with? When I learn about your influences, we will use them to tailor your lessons to YOU.

When I was young I remember teachers who I really enjoyed, and also those I didn't. I try to teach in a way that makes you as the student feel good about your progress and potential. You will always look forward to our lessons together. Prior to relocating to NY, I worked as a private guitar teacher in SC.

In addition to recording, performing, and teaching music. I have also worked in the IT industry and done technical training.
I have held roles where teaching and communication skills were essential. This translates really well to music education.

With over two decades of private teaching experience and 15 years teaching music theory, history and sight singing/ear training at Hunter College, I know how to tailor my approach to each individual’s unique needs and learning style. My goal as a teacher is to take the mystery out of making great, expressive music.

In addition to embracing traditional methods of guitar teaching, I also incorporate powerful muscular and energetic awareness techniques that help beginning students quickly build a solid technique, and enable more advanced players to solve thorny technical problems and play with greater freedom and ease.

"Why is this part so hard? It should be easy!" I often hear students say. My years of experience in observing and helping students allows me to spot the sometimes hidden technical obstacles that are holding them back from smoothly executing a transition. About JONATHAN
I didn’t begin playing seriously until later in life, so I remember what it’s like to be just starting out. And I found my struggles as an adult student to be an advantage as a teacher because they helped me understand how to break down each advancing step into its component parts and present them to my students in a logical and methodical way that they can actually absorb. Some teachers prefer to work with “advanced” students with whom they can work at a faster pace; I get satisfaction from helping students break down the process and seeing them progress at their own pace, whether they are beginners or more experienced players.

"Why is this part so hard? It should be easy!" My years of experience in observing and helping students allows me to spot the sometimes hidden technical problems that are holding you back from smoothly execu
ting a transition. By identifying those specific moments, you will know exactly what to focus on so as to make the most efficient use of your practice time. In this way, even a few minutes of focused practice can yield tangible benefits.

My education and teaching experience

Although I began college as an English major, I found that the music courses I was taking “on the side” were my favorites by far. The courses I took piqued my natural curiosity about how music works and provided my largely self-taught guitar playing with a solid foundation in music theory. I eventually transferred to the jazz program headed by John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet at the City College of New York, where I gained valuable ensemble experience as well as a well-rounded musical education.

After graduating with my B.F.A. in Guitar Performance, I studied privately with guitarist Dan Carillo, who has played and recorded with Harry Belafonte, Dianne Reeves and Tania Maria among many others. Through studying with Dan, who holds a Master’s degree in music, I observed that his deep knowledge of the structures of music was critical to his proficiency as a player, and I was inspired to continue my formal studies as well. I ended up with a M.A. in Music Composition from Hunter College, where for many years I also taught Music Theory, Sight Singing, and Ear Training courses. The depth and range of my experiences over a lifetime of learning and teaching has given me the ability to meet each student at their own level and to find what works best for them in helping them to meet their goals most efficiently.

My students also have access to seasonal performance opportunities, so they can share their talent with family and friends!

During his time there he won Georgia Music Educators Association Guitar competition three years in a row. He also received the Director's Excellence Award 3 years in a row and graduated with honors. In addition to performing in master classes for international competition winners and Grammy winning artists, he also appeared as a soloist with the University of Georgia Symphony Orchestra.

After graduating, Andrew was part of the inaugural Guitar Program at the Eastern Music Festival. He won the college division of the EMF Guitar Competition.

In May 2018, Andrew completed his Masters degree on scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music with David Leisner, and
has also received academic honors.

While still a student, he performed on guitar and drums in the Off-Broadway musical Lonesome Traveller, performing alongside Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul, and Mary.
