For the beginner we start learning immediately, by choosing what guitar and why. The different methods of sitting with the guitar, as well as standing. We then go over tuning your instrument, these things make us more familiar with the instrument. We then learn new songs by playing either chords (harmony) or melodic lines, (melodies or scales). The beginner will also learn to use "proper technique" which includes playing on fingertips, thumb placement for the fretting hand and other approaches. The picking hand techniques include and are not limited to finger picking, or the use of the plectrum.

For intermediate player it's all about theory and practice. This level of student will learn scale and chordal theory, and apply them to existing songs as well as learning the new songs with the theory in mind. More advanced picking techniques and the ability to know when to use what picking approach when reading the the rhythm figures on the staff. Knowledge of song composition is ...

- Mr Mandel is the most patient instructor, which is good since he's dealing with an 8 year old girl who's not sure she even wants to play an instrument. Somehow, he manages to instruct and motivate her even when she'd rather be playing computer games.
- I also take lessons from him- I've got a music background but had no previous experience with the guitar before and Mr Mandel was able to adapt his teaching style to accommodate that nicely.
-I highly recommend him!
Claire
I am an adult who began guitar as an adult and I have taken lessons with Mandel for nearly a year. He is the single best music instructor I have ever had. He is incredibly knowledgeable and versatile, welcomes questions, and will take time to explain anything even if it interferes with his planned lesson. He is encouraging and incredibly professional. I leave every lesson ready to try again and encouraged to keep practicing. I highly recommend him as a guitar and music theory instructor.

"For those players serious about music, who are willing to devote the time and attention required to improve, and who appreciate not only learning to play guitar but the theory and history behind the music, David is your man. I have taken lessons in the past, usually consisting of a teacher asking what riffs I wanted to work on that day. Sound familiar? Not David. Within the first two weeks, he has me focused on plucking the strings with more feel, using a pick and fingers simultaneously with my right hand, practicing scales to the tempo of a metronome while using the forwards and backwards technique, etc. He has convinced me that I can become as accomplished a player as I put my mind and heart to. His mantra is to work towards playing at the speed of thought, which, for the first time in my life, looks to be a possibility with time. Thank you, David."
