Come one, come all! Time to learn the guitar! If you have been playing for many years and want to break out of a rut, or if you just got your first guitar and suspect that there is a better way to learn than trying to sort through the haphazard offerings on youtube, I welcome you. Sign up for a lesson and come on over. I think we will have fun and you be happy to find yourself learning to play this great instrument. Stick around and you will be surprised at how far you can take it.

About Luke
I majored in music at Berea College, then went on to The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where I completed a Masters degree in guitar performance and served as the graduate assistant to the guitar department.

For the past ten years I have earned a living performing and teaching guitar. I am a certified Suzuki instructor, and I've held teaching positions at Winston Salem State University and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, along with at least half a dozen other schools and institutions. I've been featured on other artists' records, and received a grant to release an album of my own songs. I regularly perform in a wide variety of bands and ensembles.

I love to teach, and over the years I have taught hundreds, maybe even thousands of lessons. Having learned something from each and every one
of my students, I am now at a point where I excel at honing in on the individual interests and learning styles of whoever comes to me for help. There are many ways to learn guitar. The best one is the one that engages and inspires you the most. That said, there are also music fundamentals that we all need to know. My joy as a teacher lies in finding a way for you to master the fundamentals while at the same time following your personal bliss and intuition. We plot the course together, combining your curiosity and enthusiasm with my years of experience.

I also love working with kids. While they are having fun jamming, I discretely provide them with the technique and musicianship they'll need to excel in any musical environment, whether it's conservatory study or playing in a great band.

*** Lesson Details ***
Your enthusiasm is the key to your success, so my lessons are tailored to the interests and abilities of each student. That said, my classical background and dedication to effective teaching inform everything I do.

All of my students learn Music Fundamentals:
-Technique (habits of movement)
-Theory (how music works)
-Aural skills (hearing pitches, chords and rhythms clearly)

Many of my students use books. There are hundreds of great books these days, and I will work with students from any book they choose. Listed here are the books I regularly use. They all deliver great results:

-Aaron Shearer "Leaning The Classic Guitar"
-Will Schmidt and Greg Koch "The Hal Leonard Method"
-Joe Pecoraro "Read This First"
-David Oaks "Music Reading For Guitar"
-William Leavitt "A Modern Method For Guitar"
-Mateo Carcassi "Melodic and Progressive Studies, Opus 60"
-Leo Brouwer "Simple Studies"

Many of my students prefer to work without a book, and that is a great option too. These students learn scales, chords and theory and develop a repertoire of songs. I will show you how to play any song you'd like to learn. You can also work on writing your own songs or compositions, or improvising in any context, be it jazz, blues, Indian raga or flamenco.

Singing is also encouraged!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio: music stands, extensive library of all kinds of music, great sound system and ability to stream any song, several guitars, recording equipment, footstools, keyboard and percussion instruments.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I'll bring my guitar and books, accessories as needed.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in versatility. I regularly play gigs doing classical, jazz, blues, rock, pop, and world music. All of these genres have a place in my heart, and I've devoted years to learning to play and teach them well.

I am equally polyamorous when it comes to the various things musicians do. I love to sing pop songs, dissect jazz lines, delve into expressive groupings with classical pieces, drill scales and arpeggios, you name it. Reading, improvising, composing and notating, transcribing and playing by ear, memorization, classical technique, blues technique, bluegrass technique, theoretical analysis... hit me up for any of that, or whatever else interests you.

Some of my guitar influences are Van Halen, Steve Vai, ACDC, Guns ‘n Roses, Led Zeppelin and James Brown just to name a few. I have a passion for music and love to share this with others willing to learn the instrument.

Some example lessons would be as follows:

I target each student uniquely. No cookie-cutter lesson plans! I learn your short and long-terms goals and set the lesson material appropriately to help the student achieve their goals. Lessons absolutely have to be fun, so if you like to laugh and have a good time while learning guitar, this is right up your alley!

I use both written and media formats for my lessons. For example, the written material may include chords, modes or scales while the MP3 files (which I send via email) will cover the application of this material and can be used by the student for reference at home. Often the MP3 files include the material performed at a very slow speed and then again at normal speed to help the student understand the lesson and material.

I've been teaching guitar for over 10 years and my students have gone on to be musicians, some even worship leaders and some just play for fun. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play a few chords and as time goes on you'll be able to develop the intricacies of finger picking and rhythmic changes. I specialize in blues music and especially open tunings, typically use Hal Leonard and Mel Bay books, and have the following tools available for your lessons: amplifiers, recording equipment, effects pedals and acoustic and electric guitars. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!

About Willy
Willy has been teaching music for more than a decade, carrying on the tradition he learned when his father taught him piano as a youth. He is a multi-instrumentalist with a degree in music from Earlham College in historic Richmond, IN (the birthplace of recorded jazz, and home of 30s era Genette Records).

As a sound technician Willy gained valuable experience working at the world famous Tarry Town Music Hall near Sleepy Hollow, NY, where he worked with top notch touring bands like Blues Traveler, the Indigo Girls, Paul Shaffer, the Marshall Tucker Band, and the late, great Levon Helm. He also worked with A-list actors such as Stanley Tucci, James Cahn, Kevin Bacon and Keanu Reeves.

While living in Austin, TX, Willy was a member of the American Federation of Musicians alongside greats like Los Lonely Boys, George Straight, Lyle Lovet
t and Willie Nelson.

As a father of four young children, Willy teaches in a family friendly environment. At the SIW events, he has taught elementary students as well as adults all the way up to 86 years old! Willy is a background checked teacher and would love to pass on his knowledge of music to you and your family!

Emphasis on chords, strumming patterns, scales, improvisation, and basic songwriting. Students pick their own songs to learn. Electric and acoustic guitar are both options.

**NOT a classical guitar course. Picks and capos are required.**

About Kierstyn
Kierstyn E. St. John is a pianist, composer, arranger and improviser who possesses an impressive repertoire of more than 500 memorized songs in every genre from classical to jazz to contemporary/pop. Kierstyn is also a talented improviser-- which she can do for hours on end in both classical and jazz styles. Because she has studied piano for over eighteen years, she has developed extremely impressive technicality from studying everything from Rachmaninoff to Bill Evans to Dream Theater. Furthermore, her performance experience has given her an innate talent of programming. She knows exactly which songs to choose for a certain gig; if you give her a genre, she can make a setlist that exactly suits the needs of your arrangement.

She has performed extensively in venues such as the Wigwam Resort, and the Ground Controls in Goodyear and in V
errado. She has played hundreds of events including weddings, memorials, private parties, festivals, and church fairs; Kierstyn was also the accompanist for all three choirs at her high school. She was the principal pianist for Northminster Presbyterian Church for four years and rocked the house as the pianist in the ASU Latin Jazz Combo for two.

Kierstyn just graduated summa cum laude with Bachelor's of Music in Composition at Arizona State University. She has studied with James DeMars, Rodney Rogers, and Kotoka Suzuki. Since attending college, she has been commissioned by Ironwood and Imagine Prep high schools, The ASU Barrett Choir, The Phoenix Art Museum, The ASU Art Museum, and Voices for the Voiceless. In 2014, she won the Four Seasons Women's Composers Competition, and her string quintet "The Monarch" was performed in September by their professional orchestra and her score for the play “Poseidon's Regret” received a nomination for a 2016 ariZoni Award!

Brooklyn-based private music teacher operating in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Over a decade of experience teaching a broad range of styles to students of all ages and backgrounds. Strong focus on the individual student's personal interests and goals. Master's degree in music with years of experience touring globally and recording for both major and indie labels.
Whether you're looking to begin your or your child's guitar learning experience, or take your playing to the next level, it's my passion to get students playing the music they want to play, right from the beginning!

About Ken
A recent transplant to the Park Slope area, I'm a composer and multi-instrumentalist originally from Raleigh, North Carolina. Prior to receiving my master's degree in composition from Mannes (The New School), I was the lead guitarist in the indie rock band Annuals. As part of this group I signed with two major record labels, appeared on national television programs such as Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and performed globally both on tour and at prominent festivals such as Bonnaroo, Coachella, Glastonbury (England), and Roskilde (Denmark).

I have been teaching private music lessons for twelve years, both freelance and as part of various organizations. My approach to teaching is highly dynamic—I don't use the same method with every student and I have no stylistic prejudices or an agenda to push. I approach each student as an individual
, tailoring lesson plans to suit their personal goals and interests. I have experience playing and teaching an extensive range of styles including pop, rock, jazz, country, metal, and classical. One of my main goals is to foster a sense of musical understanding with every student so that they may learn to combine technical, theoretical, and aural skills into a unified whole.

Most students want to learn to play songs they know and love. To that end, I get students playing the music they want to play right from the beginning, often through personally crafted arrangements of songs/pieces of the student's choosing, specifically tailored to their current skill level. This way, technical and theoretical skills are learned through direct experience with actual music, and only very rarely through rote exercise.

For more advanced players, I offer an array of strategies designed to take your playing to the next level. I find that the most common shortcomings of advanced players are conceptual. The technical skills are there but the level of conceptual and theoretical understanding has hit a wall. Many players find themselves playing the same chord shapes, melodic patterns, and harmonic progressions over and over again. I've had much success over the years in getting advanced students out of this rut and helping open up new pathways for exploration in both improvisation and composition.

I've been playing off and on for 15 years and am mostly self taught. I knew what I wanted to learn but was having trouble figuring it out on my own. In the first lesson Ken was able to zero in on what I want to learn and the best way to go about it. In three lessons I feel that I understand the guitar so much more than I have in the past 15 years of playing. Not only from a technical standpoint, but also in a "feel" sense. On my own I could learn all the scales, chords, and songs I wanted, but Ken has helped me to make sense of everything and use these skills to become a better player all around.

Ken is an incredibly talented musician and teacher and I would recommend him to anyone. He tailors his lessons to meet the individual goals of his students. If I wasn't understanding something, he knew how to explain it in a different way until I understood. He also taught me some techniques for figuring out songs on my own which I really appreciate since I am about move out of NYC. However, if I wasn't leaving I would still be taking lessons with him!

If you're looking to quickly learn the basics of guitar, I can help you with that. We begin by learning open chords, then move on to bar chords, and strumming patterns. Again, my lessons cater to each individual student's goals and taste in music.

About Jennifer
Hi, there! My name is Jennifer and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2014 and have loved helping my students play by ear, learn to read music, and improvise pop songs. I went to Temple University in Philadelphia and earned a degree in music production. I'm a stress free and easy going person and my teaching style is catered to the student's interests, long term goals, and personality. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

My teaching experience began while working as the music teacher at a day program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities called SpArc Services in Philadelphia. I taught private piano, voice and guitar students through a studio called Philly Music Lessons for 2+ years. I also was the music teacher for the Lansdowne Presbyterian Pre-School in Pennsylvania.

I teach my students out of my comfortable home/studio in Van Nuys, but can teach online and travel to you. The regular styles I teach are: Pop, rock, RnB, improvisational piano, classical voice/piano.

I am passionate about music and teaching guitar. I am a self-taught guitar player so I know what it is like to be a beginner, knowing nothing. I put a lot of thought into teaching myself so I can easily teach others. Beginner students will learn the basic chords, finger picking and artificial harmonics. Intermediate students will learn how to tap, pick harmonics and artificial harmonics. Pull offs and bending notes, usually found in Rock & Roll and Country, can easily be learned and included. Students need to have a good guitar, be eager to learn and complete homework/practice.

After a combined 4 years of musical experience, my goal is simple: to genuinely teach you everything I know! I value every minute spent with every student. I believe guitar lessons shouldn't only be fun, but have the potential to be LIFE changing. Taking lessons with me will not only leave you a better guitar player, but my goal is to help my students fall in love with guitar the way I have! From playing simple chords to impressive riffs, I look forward to nothing else than helping you grow as a guitarist! I promise you won't be disappointed, and I'm excited to get started!

About Nick
I am currently a lead guitar and piano player for a collective artist band that plays for events, camps, and churches across the country (@risingworship). I am also completing online courses through Michigan State University to receive my certificate in Music Theory and Guitar Scales/Chord Progressions to teach to the best of my ability.

I don't teach how to read sheet music (this isn't to be confused with chord charts and guitar tabs, I often use them to teach). What I do know how to do is hear a song, and by listening to it know exactly what to do in order to find out how to play it without the help of technology. Learning to play by ear isn't as hard as it may sound! When you learn how to read music, you cannot play anything unless you have sheet music in front of you. I firmly believe the true joy in becoming a musician happens whe
n you really begin to understand the instrument, and can express yourself through it. My life has been changed by music in the best way, and I find it incredible that I get the opportunity to help you learn what has made me who I am!

My interest in music styles is endless. Whether its jazz, blues, rock, country, etc., I respect all genres! And whichever genre you would be interested in learning, whether its one or all, I look forward to meeting you and growing along side you!
