After graduating from Salford University, England with a Bachelors degree (Honors) in Music and Composing I worked for a short time as a commercial "jingle" writer, before moving to San Diego, marrying my dream girl, and opening my own music recording, teaching and production studio. From there I have been teaching lessons, recording bands and writing music for independent film ad video games for the last 6 years. Throughout this time I've been continually performing live in venues all over California.
*** Lesson Details *** I teach both from a privately rented studio in Santee and from my home studio in La Mesa. Both are fully equipped for guitar, bass and drum lessons and even have recording facilities! In my lesson plans I try to combine theory and technique with practical application (that is, playing music and rocking out!).
A typical lesson begins with a warm up and review of last weeks' lesson, and then moves to a new concept or technique. Once this new idea is understood, we give it a practical application by using it a song the student is familiar with. We finish up by setting some homework and answering any questions the student my have.
My lessons are structured and goal orientated (I want my students playing songs they love as soon as possible to keep the inspiration and excitement going!) but I adapt each lesson plan to suit the student, accommodating different musical tastes and learning styles. Most important I keep the lessons fun and engaging - it's the best way to learn!
*** Studio Equipment *** Fulling equipped, professional teaching studio. Guitars, drums, amps, PAs, Pianos, Mandolins and much more!
*** Specialties *** Very versatile both in preferred styles and my ability to adapt to students requests. Can cover anything from jazz to metal, or pop to blues, on guitar, bass or drums.
David is awesome!! He tailors lessons to fit your musical preference but also takes you out of your comfort zone to challenge you and help one build confidence...in three short lessons I've learned so much! Not just technically, but personally as well. Great teacher, fun sessions, highly recommend

I've had 4 lessons so far with David and have learned so much about music theory and mandolin playing. He is an absolutely amazing teacher. I highly recommend him.
March 23, 2019
Really fun and listened very well. I’m excited to start this musical journey.
Beginner I'm not currently taking beginner students. Please refer to my studio partner Melissa: https://takelessons.com/profile/melissa-m62
Intermediate Learn about common variations of the tonalities you already know and start to venture into more complex rhythm ideas like polyrhythms. Also start to build the chops to learn parts more accurately when learning songs.
Advanced Expand into more complex polyrhythms as well as asymmetrical meters. Also expand harmony and melody to include modes and chromaticism. Push your skills through original creations or original arrangements of existing material.
*Disclaimer* I'm currently not taking beginner students on voice/singing, guitar, bass, drums, piano, and ukulele. I highly recommend my studio partners Melissa though. Please check out her profile:
I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.
Philosophy of Learning
Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations. It's really important to know though that everyone makes their own experience. The process of learning music involves you learning as much about your own mind and body as it does any external concepts, so please keep in mind only you can move yourself forward.
I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.
I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!) Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.
Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype. (*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)
*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
My studio is equipped with:
*A P.A. System
*Vocal and instrument microphones
*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc

Jesse has given directions on how to successfully become a better musician. His approach and explanation on musical theories was much more understandable than what I was previously reading. Overall, I found the lessons to be very usefull.

Jesse is very friendly and a fun teacher to be around.

David discovered his love for music early on at the age of seven with the musical/movie: The Sound of Music. He and his siblings would entertain their babysitter by acting out the entire musical - singing and dancing along with the soundtrack. To make it even more fun, they would sometimes speed up the vinyl record and perform in extra-fast mode!
He vividly remembers his first real musical instruction back in elementary school: “Everyone in 4th Grade was given a Recorder to learn how to play 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star'. When the music teacher had the class play together, she noticed that I wasn't looking down at my music booklet as I played, since I was 'playing by ear'. Not only was my booklet turned to the wrong page; it was upside down as well! To admonish me, she had me stand up in front of the whole class and play
solo - as she held the booklet in front of me. Enthusiastically, I rendered the complete song correctly, only pretending to read from the page as she held it, but actually 'playing by ear'. Upon getting to the end of the tune, I suddenly broke out in a jazzed-up, improvised version of 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star', arousing the whole class to spontaneously tap their feet in rhythm and clap with delight . . . my first solo performance!”
David eventually took up guitar in his teens, becoming involved with playing for musicals such as "Godspell" and "Jesus Christ Superstar". During high school, he also played in the Bluegrass band 'Odell & Zeke', and in the Rock band 'Ring Wraith', performing for local dances and proms.
Extremely versatile within classical and popular guitar styles, David played in the Top-40-Hit music video, Shine Shine, by The Bee Gees' Barry Gibb – alongside pop-star legend - Michael Jackson. David is also mentioned in Just Jazz Guitar Magazine for his jazz endeavors; and he has years of experience as a church music director.
As a Classical concert guitarist, David has performed throughout the USA and Europe. His live performances have been broadcast on television and radio: NPR’s Performance Today (USA); CBC’s Arts National (Canada); RAI Television’s In Concerto (Italy), and the Hungarian National Television. Successful in competitions, David won First Prize in the 20th International Guitar Competition in Milan, Italy and First Prize in the National Wurlitzer Artist Competition, USA. He has received other awards and grants as well, including a Solo Recitalist Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Governor's Award from Department of State, Florida. Moreover, he was chosen for the rosters of both the California State Touring Program and the North Carolina Visiting Artists Program.
David’s 35 years of teaching and performing experience, coupled with intensive years of formal studies with many of the world's greatest guitarists, including Andres Segovia, Eliot Fisk, David Russell, Christopher Parkening, Holzman, Ghiglia, Morgen, Tomas, Isbin - have afforded him a rich and in-depth understanding of music and the guitar. He shares all of this with his students in an insightful and uniquely original manner.

David is the rare combination of a true artist who wants to help others discover their own musical voice. He is always able to find a solution to my technical problems, with the goal of helping me play more musically. He takes me seriously as a student, challenging and encouraging me with understanding, patience and kindness.
December 17, 2016
David was very knowledgeable about music and made it easy to understand. This was especially important to me since I am starting new, not having any musical background other than a love for music and a passion to play. This instructor helped me realize I have potential which is also important. After just one lesson I was able to take what he taught me and put some of his advice together musically and it is starting to make sense. I am looking forward to my future lessons!
The Uke is growing in popularity because of it's ease of playing and how much fun it is to play. A great starter instrument to branch onto guitar later on or a unique instrument to master. I can help you master the Uke and have a lot of fun doing it.
I have been a professional performing musician and producer for over 10 years and have had hundreds of students during that time. I grew up playing classic rock and classical. By the time I graduated high school I had visited 26 states playing music. I have studied music at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma and have performed in various groups. I have a unique passion for teaching music and making it fun. I have the classical training and performance experience to help take your musicianship to the next level while having a blast.
Great first lesson, I've got another scheduled today and am very much looking forward to it. And yes, Jeremy, I did my muscle memory homework.
January 7, 2019
Really solid first lesson. Jeremy was warm and engaging. I look forward to working more with him in the future.
September 18, 2018
Jeremy is very calm, supportive, and knowledgeable. His lessons have a clear direction and are focused on my goals. I enjoy the lesson and am willing to work hard in between each lesson. I highly recommend him.
I have been making music for over 15 years. I have a diverse background. I started out sampling, and sequencing all types of music back in the 90's. I made dance music, hiphop, RnB, rock, etc. I was more of a producer than performer then. Then I decided to go to school and get a degree in music. I went to Cal State San Marcos and obtained my bachelors in music. I developed into a fingerstyle guitarist while I was there. I also learned how to play the piano while I was there. But I concentrated on the acoustic guitar.
*** Specialties *** Blues, Folk, Rock, Country, Hip Hop, Soul, Indie, Electronic
Lets rock the uke! Lets learn all your favorite songs to jam along too, or delve deep into what this amazing little instrument can really do, it's all up you.
My passion is sharing music with people.
I love to answer questions and learn things I don't know, I know a good amount about guitar repair, improvised instrument building, how to buy a good instrument and not spend to much, and I have a vast knowledge of obscure instruments, and audio production as well. Feel free to ask me questions, and expect informative non-judgmental answers.
I have spent a lot of time developing as a vocalist, songwriter, composer and producer, which helps me in all aspects of my music and teaching, I'm always looking to learn more. I have played in heavy metal bands, but have also done solo acoustic singer/songwriting stuff, I have produced raw hip-hop but also love old soul and ska tunes. Being well rounded musically and drawing from lots of influences is what makes me a good teacher and shapes me as a m
As an artist I have been featured on MTV, Rollingstone, BBC, NBC, VOA, ARY, Alt Press, LA times, documentaries and more. I have been playing guitar and recording music since childhood and am a classically trained sitar player and Indian classical vocalist.
I am a great teacher for someone who wants to write songs, or is into Indie, rock, pop, reggae, metal, hip-hop, and electronica.
*** Lesson Details/ What to Expect ***
You can expect a custom, fun and attentive one on one lesson. I am thorough and patient. I expect you to love music and put forth effort. I'm laid back, I will work as fast or as slow as you need. I prefer a total immersion technique and get my students playing right away. This boosts confidence and fosters interest because once a student enjoys playing you don't have to convince them to practice.
By the first lesson you will be familiar with the instrument and it's parts, and playing your first chord.
In 3-6 months you will be playing guitar with a greater knowledge of chords, basic harmony and be able to play scales and songs.
Once you have a foundation of chords we can explore more specific music subjects and lessons will become more personalized: songwriting, guitar tones, musicology, making a DIY record, shredding like a metalhead, I can guide you to help you achieve your goals.
I receive a very large number of student requests everyday, So to keep things organized please keep the following in mind:

Please make sure you have your own instrument, and a note book or device to take notes with.
I loved my lessons with Omar! He's very knowledgable, and not just about the instrument but music in general. He worked with me for about 7 months to help achieve my goal of learning to improvise on the bass guitar. Omar is very easy to talk to and very funny. He knew how to take complicated music theory and really break it down so that I could understand it better. I left each lesson with an assignment, a technique or a song to practice what we learned in that week's lesson.
I feel very comfortable with being able to be at a jam session and play along with the rest of the group. He taught me how to come up with licks using factorials, how to create a solo using modes and adding some flavor to the solos with techniques such as pop and slap or changing the tempo.
Thank you, Omar, for being such a great teacher! I feel much more confident in myself as a bass player because of the time you spent with me and all of the knowledge you departed onto me. I am very appreciative of you for that - thanks again!
August 16, 2019
Omar is just the best. Even when I've not practiced as much as I should between lessons I always make sure to go, because he always has so much to teach and I always leave feeling uplifted and excited about music. Omar never makes you feel stupid for asking "stupid" questions, and incorporates a range of methods to make the lessons meaningful. I never thought I'd be able to improvise a blues riff after just a few lessons with him playing backup drums! Omar thinks outside the box and is so adaptable to your needs. He showed me a "bass" he made out of a cast-off guitar with weed-whacker filament as strings for a client with very limited hand motion. Book a lesson with Omar; you won't regret it!

Great start. Ryann learned a lot already. She can’t wait to return.
As is the goal for every student I teach, I want the student to have a good time while playing an instrument. You will learn, you will play, you will have FUN!
TESTIMONIALS "Jonathan's experience as a musician and teacher helped me advance tremendously in my ability to play guitar and understand music on a more advanced level. He's great at relating to his students and takes a genuine interest in their progress. " -Victoria L.
"Gio was really encouraging and I look forward to continuing lessons with him!"
"Jess is dedicated, patient, and confident teacher!!!
I am so happy that I have found Jesse as the ukulele teacher of my 7 years old son. You can tell t
hat he lives for music and it's not just a job for him teaching students. He is determined but patient with the kid and really has educational skills."
"Jeff is an amazing instructor. He makes you feel so comfortable and tunes into your abilities to ensure he tailors your lessons to help you achieve the mo
st out of your lessons. Would definately recommend him."
"My sister bought 5 months of ukulele lessons for my 7-old-daughter as a gift and it has been a wonderful experience! At first, I was a little unsure of ho
w online lessons would work out, especially for a 7-year-old, but Glenn kept my daughter engaged and fielded all technical challenges with grace and skill. He introduced things clearly and systematically, but I was most impressed with his sensitivity to appeal to my daughter's particular interests. Rather than giving her canned kiddy beginner pieces to start with (which certainly would have been easier for him), he asked what songs she liked and then transposed them himself to her level. That takes effort and dedication and really sets Glenn apart. Furthermore, Glenn met Jackie's brother one day and learned that he plays guitar and asked if they wanted something to play together. He evaluated my son's level and again, transposed a wonderful little arrangement for them to play together. It was wonderful that they had such an opportunity and everyone in the family loved getting to hear their duet. Glenn has truly succeeded in establishing a genuine interest in this instrument for my daughter, and I am grateful and touched by the way he tailored a program just for her. She has enjoyed the lessons very much and says she wants to go to California and meet Glenn face-to-face one day."
"Subtle evaluation of my skill level and gave me some great tips. I'm coming back for more."
"Don was very patient with my son. He not only taught my son to play the Ukulele but also answered his numerous questions about video production."
"Landon was professional polite and friendly. My daughter felt like she learned a lot and has a lot to practice. Great first lesson."
Are you ready to pick up a ukulele and start strumming? Ukulele teacher Willy M. shares three things you should know before you strum that first chord...
Hey budding ukulele players! I wanted to take a moment to tell you about three important things you should probably know before you decide to learn to play ukulele.
1. Make sure you have a ukulele and not a toy
When I first decided I wanted to learn to play ukulele, it was after a trip to visit relatives in Florida. I walked into a g …
