Since the ukulele is related to a European instrument and the guitar from Spain, the relative tuning is the same. It should be tuned a perfect fourth up from a guitar, so the first string is tuned to an A, second string should be tuned to an E, third string will be a C, & the fourth string should be tuned to a G an octave up. Most ukuleles have a fourth string that is an octave above what the normal progression would be of most stringed instruments. If your G string is not tuned an octave up it’s a larger size than the average ukulele G string and would be considered a “drop G” tuning. I use a drop G tuning on my instrument because I prefer that configuration.
The scale and chord patterns on the ukulele are similar to guitar, so if you know how to play some guitar you will have a big head start on the ukulele. You can think of it as a guitar that has a capo placed on the fifth fret. You can play a C chord on this guitar with the fifth fret capped, but it’s not really a C chord, right? It’s now an F chord because it must be transposed up a perfect fourth. Now play a D chord on the ukulele. It’s really a G chord because it must be transposed up just like if you were playing a guitar with a capo on the fifth fret. Simple, right?
I have been a professional working musician for over thirty years and while my main instrument is guitar, I do use the ukulele in my work from time to time. I also have been teaching this instrument since 2009 because so many people are interested in it now. It has really seen a huge resurgence in the last couple of years. Previously it was very popular back in the 1920’s.
I sincerely hope that we have a chance to get together and work on developing your talent. I am certain that you will consider this to be one of your most interesting and rewarding experiences.

Jesse H. plays guitar with The Mar Dels, one of San Diego’s best-known dance and party bands. But he’s more than just a rock-and-roller — he’s studied jazz and classical guitar with other master musicians.
His lessons focus on developing:
- Right and left hand technique
- Finger picking and flat picking
- Tonal and sound quality
- Playing and singing
- The ability to play a solo
- Chords, scales, and arpeggios
Jesse’s broad skill set allows him to teach a variety of styles, though he’s happy to focus on one particular style if that’s what the student prefers.
Don’t miss this opportunity to take guitar or ukulele lessons from one of the top musicians in San Diego.
*** Overview ***
I studied jazz guitar with Peter Sprague and classical guitar with Celin Romero. While at UCSD, I studied with Pepe Romero in master classes. In 1982, I became interested in classic rock and founded my band, The Mar Dels. During my time with the band, I’ve learned and performed many classic rock hits. One of the best-known dance/party bands in San Diego, the Mar Dels continue to play at private and public events locally, nationally, and globally.
*** Lesson Details ***
I give my guitar students a solid background in right and left hand technique. This includes finger picking technique for the right hand as well as flat picking. It’s important for students develop a correct left hand position, if they wish to continue to play for many years without injury to the left hand. It’s also very important to young students who may wish to move into classical music. Most classical guitar music can’t be played well with a standard rock left hand technique, but all rock music can be played very well with a good classical left hand technique.
Most of the studies I use with my students are songs, scales and arpeggios from my personal library, so it won’t be necessary for my students to buy any books right away. However, if students want some additional materials to review, I can suggest some titles.
I emphasize the quality of sound that the student produces with the instrument. Many musicians feel that playing a piece of music is like running a 100-yard dash. I prefer that my students play at a comfortable tempo and create beautiful sounds, rather than rushing through a song simply to show an ability to play fast. I feel that it’s very important to practice any new piece or exercise at a slow tempo till it can be played well with relaxed hands. When the tempo is gradually increased, one acquires beauty with speed.
Within the first three months, the average student should be able to play some open position chords, bar chords, and arpeggios, and be able to improvise over a chord progression using four or more notes from at least one pentatonic scale. I like my students to learn at least one guitar solo (a piece that features guitar either solo or with accompaniment) within six months that they could play for their friends or parents. If the student’s goal is to use the guitar to accompany their voice, they can learn to sing and play at the same time. This is a special skill that takes time to master, and is something that I have done for years. I’m happy to share my ideas on how to develop this skill with my students.
Ultimately, the progress of the student depends on their talent level and their desire to acquire skills. If a student is interested in only one style of playing, I am happy to focus on it; however, I have a very broad skill set on the guitar and I like my students to develop as many techniques as possible.
*** Equipment ***
Depending on the student’s interest, I bring either a steel string or a classical guitar, and I prefer that the student also have an appropriate instrument. If it’s an introductory lesson for a beginning student, I can bring an instrument for them to use for the lesson.
*** Specialties ***
Since 1982 I have played guitar in The Mar Dels, a popular dance and party band so I am familiar with most pop, blues & rock styles of playing.
I have always loved the classical guitar and I am especially interested in good technique and tonal quality.
Teaching beginning through advanced guitar and ukulele.
I have held my position with The Mar Dels, Inc. for over thirty years which is an unusually long time be a top performer in the music business.
In addition to playing guitar and singing during Mar Dels performances my responsibilities include, contracting events, holding deposits, banking, keeping calendars up to date, paying the performers and keeping books and financial records, filing all quarterly payroll tax returns and end of the year corporate tax returns and filing our annual statement of domestic stock. I am also involved in producing all of the promotional recordings, videos, website information and e-mail blasts about public events. Somewhere in this big mess I need to find time to practice my own music and increase my own skill level. I also need to practice to learn my parts as the band adds new songs.
Jesse is a great teacher! Very passionate about guitar, kind, and interested in his students.
Jesse is great. He is patient and kind. We are taking it slowly and methodically and that works great for me. He is also very encouraging.

Jesse is going to be a great teacher for me. He obviously knows what he is teaching and I can already tell, that he will be able to judge how far to push me, or to back off a bit if I get stumped. His enthusiasm is contagious.I am already looking forward to future lessons.
I am a visual person so his method makes perfect sense to me, just have to get the
fingers to keep up with my brain. I was afraid it might be the other way around, so am pleasantly surprised. Now, practice begins.
Jesse is our first music teacher and my 9 year old son is really enjoying his Ukulele lessons. My favorite thing about Jesse is how often he compliments my son during his 30 minute lesson. Practicing has yet to be a struggle and my son looks forward to his lesson. Jesse is able to keep my son's attention and make his lesson fun for him. In 5 lessons my son has learned to read music and several basic songs. It is easy to welcome Jesse in our home for the lesson. We highly recomend him as a teacher. My son wants me to add that when Jesse rides his motorcycle to our house for the lesson it is also super cool!+ Read More

Plus, you can't help but smile when there's a Ukulele being played in the house! Thank you Jesse for sharing your gift and passion of music to others.+ Read More

Pretty cool! As impatient as I am, Jesse is pretty good at letting me know about improvements and how to play and still makes it a relaxed environment. SO much better than learning when i was a kid in public schools with instructors on a "lesson plan".+ Read More

Jesse has been a great guitar/ukulele teacher for our daughter. He keeps the lessons interesting by introducing new and hip music. He is patient and always punctual. Da Best! :)
Jessie has taught my daughter classical and regular guitar for a couple of years. There are many, many thing I like about Jesse's teaching. One of the things that I like most is that he asks my daughter what she wants to learn and then teaches it to her. He mixes up the theory and it's application with what she wants to learn keeping interest and motivation at a high. Another thing that I like is the breadth of material he brings. His students end up well versed in all types of music and are able to play well known pieces in many different genres. Yet another thing that I like is his creditability. He walks the walk. His group plays regularly. Any doubts that your teenager may have about him can be quickly and easily put to rest just by going to hear him perform. Jesse is a good teacher and I highly recommend him.+ Read More

Jesse has been a great teacher for the last two years for our 12 year old son who with just one lesson a week has progressed to an advanced level on the guitar and is consistently energized and enthusiastic after each lesson. Jesse is a professional and a fabulous musician and we feel fortunate to have him come to our home to teach our son. Jesse arrives on time, is dedicated and inspirational, and makes sure to schedule make up lessons when needed.+ Read More
Jessee was great! Was amazing with our 6 year old as well as her dad! Would definitely recommend.
Jesse is patient and kind. He pushes my 9 year old granddaughter a bit and she responds! She's already playing a few songs (recognizable, even) after only about 3-4 lessons. She practices many days (not all) and seems, in her unassuming way, to look forward to showing Jesse how she is doing.+ Read More
Jesse is gentle and patient with my 5 year old grandson. Simon sits and waits for him, holding his Ukulele. One time we missed the cancellation and Simon was so sad!
Jesse has been teaching me ukelele and my husband guitar for the past few months. I had never picked up a ukelele before I started, and at the end of my first lesson he had me playing a song! He works great with absolute beginners (like me) and with those who have been playing but want to hone their skills (like my husband). He comes to our house, is always on time, and is a great teacher. I would recommend Jesse to anyone.+ Read More

Jesse is a wonderful guitar instructor. He is very encouraging and has a gentle but effective way of communicating. He keeps the lessons moving well too. I strongly recommend him.
Jesse is very patient and encouraging. I especially appreciate Jesse's ability to simplify what I find complex.
We moved to the area from aboard 6 months ago and didn't no how to find a guitar teacher for our daughter.
Take lessons pointed us in the direction of Jesse, and we haven't looked back!
Our daughter thoroughly enjoys her lessons with Jesse, who makes it a lot more appealing by introducing modern music to the lessons. I have and would continue to recommend him.
My main regret is that I did not start with him when I was much younger!
I have had the pleasure of lessons from Jesse Horner for two years. I started when I was 73 years old and never had any music training before, so I started from scratch. Jesse has been great in guiding me in the direction I seemed to want to go. With almost 40 years experience, I think Jesse has experience and knowledge of every aspect of music theory, guitars and guitar playing(also Ukuleles). He makes the lessons enjoyable and is very flexible and understanding in his teaching process. My main regret is that I did not start with him when I was much younger!
If you have high standards, you'll be pleased
Having moved from Barcelona Spain we were interested in continuing our daughter's classical guitar lessons. He is able to connect to our daughter (age 10) and encourage her while giving her good feedback. She practices on her own (without reminders) and looks forward to Jesse's visits. You won't be disappointed.
Great with Kids
Jesse has been very patient and understanding with our shy child. He brings out the best in her and is very encouraging and patient while she slowly builds her new skills. He has found great ways to keep her interested in learning this difficult instrument. He is easy to get a hold of and always on time.
You can't go wrong with Jesse
Our daughter who just turned 9 started taking guitar lessons with Jesse a few months ago as a beginner with no experience. We have been very satisfied with her progress and her enthusiasm has grown the more she learns. Jesse has a very kind, patient, and flexible style of teaching. He took the time to get to know our daughter and allows her to have input on the songs and music that they work on. My son once took guitar lessons and never really progressed and eventually quit. I see a huge difference with my daughter's guitar lessons experience and I attribute that all to the excellence in teaching that Jesse provides.
My daughter had very little previous guitar experience, but within 5 short lessons, he instilled in her a love for playing the guitar and gave her a level of confidence, despite her normally shy demeanor, that allowed her to join him on stage in a jam session to play a couple of songs with him. It's an experience that she will never forget and his friendly and easy going personality is a bonus to his teaching skills.
Jesse is excellent...patient, encouraging and very sensitive/skilled re:how and when to offer constructive suggestions about things you are doing incorrectly. He is a really really good teacher and a very nice guy.
Jesse H. ROCKS!
Jesse is teaching my 11 year old son and he is doing the best job. My son is learning at a fast pace and enjoys practicing on his own. Jesse is doing a fantastic job!
