I was very much a beginner when I started taking lessons with Andrew. He was extremely helpful, and catered the lessons to wha
I'll turn 45 this year, people younger than I have said they feel they are too old to learn to play the guitar, BS, the truth is you're never too old but you'll likely need two things. First you'll need to have the passion to learn and second, you need to have a great teacher and a few helpful tools. I've been a huge U2 fan since high school in the mid-eighties. There's a famous quote from Bob Dylan about The Edge's playing: "Everybody's going to remember your songs, it's just that nobody's gonna be able to play them." I never had any passion to learn the guitar because what I wanted to play was U2 and it seemed out of my reach.
The tools available to a beginner today are amazing; websites with lessons and tips, and learning apps for the iPad really reduce the amount of time it takes to learn. Hardware and software can accurately emulate the tone of vintage guitars and racks of effects. I started with a guitar and an amp but didn't know how to get started learning; with so many resources available where do you start. I decided that I should take lessons to build a solid foundation of not just playing but understanding the guitar and music otherwise just learning to play U2 songs would take a long time and I'd be cornered into one style of playing. I found Drew and arranged to have once weekly lessons.
In our first lesson Drew determined that I really had no experience and so we dove in. We went over some basic chords, reading sheet music, chose a first song to learn and some strumming patterns. Drew makes sure that any questions you have are covered and leaves you with things to focus on during practice the following week. Each subsequent lesson starts with a review of progress; Drew provides constructive feedback and shows you where you are missing or adding something. If you are really stuck on a part you spend a few minutes focused on that to get past it. Drew is sharp and can quickly determine if the issue is mental (the brain is over thinking) or physical (the fingers or muscles aren't trained) and explains how to overcome the issue based on that. Within a couple of months I gained enough confidence to start learning short riffs of songs (The Police, U2 and others) that I like on my own. The first time I decided to share something I was working on with Drew I wasn't totally sure if he would encourage it or advise me to stay focused on what we were learning. He was pleased to see that I was taking my own initiative to learn new things and we spent a few minutes reviewing and discussing how to improve what I was learning, awesome!
As I stated before, my biggest challenge is finding time to practice, but with Drew's instruction and as much practice as I can fit in my progress has been noticeable. I have a long term goal of being a good guitar player; Drew has been an amazing force behind helping me see that I can achieve my goal."
I have been with 2 teachers before him, and I have faced the same problem, they do not listen.
I told them, the same thing I told Dyce, I want to learn to play Blues/Rock Lead and Rhythm guitar asap, not by doing (mostly) exercises, but by doing exercise that will quickly lead me to start playing simple Blues/Rock songs, this way I don't get board, and give up playing (which I do not want to do).
From the first day I started with Dyce he listened and has continued to do so, he has given me simple scales and songs to help me start playing lead guitar rite away, and I know that Dyce will keep me going steady towards my goal, of being a proficient Blues/Rock guitar player as soon as possible.
Dyce knows what it takes to get one playing quickly, and is not afraid of (loosing) a student too quickly do to him giving the student some short cuts, that shows that he truly cares and listens, and that he is confident about him self as a teacher."
I highly recommend Eric

I'm willing to bet that "playing like a girl" will stop being an insult within this little lady's lifetime! At just 8 years old, Lisa-X is able to play rapid fire metal solos that will melt your face off and blow your mind. She's smaller than her guitar, but she sure knows how to make it sound big and mighty. Plus, the sweet grin she gives the camera as she's bending a note around 1:46? Priceless! Child prodigies like Lisa are absolutely amazing, but there's really no wrong age to star … Read More
