The ukulele is a creative adaptation and redesign of the machete de braga, a small stringed instrument that was introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants in August of 1879. The Hawaiian people fell in love with the sound of the instrument and named it “ukulele" because the fingers of the performer dancing around on the neck and strings as a song was played resembled jumping fleas. Ukulele means jumping fleas in the Hawaiian language.
Since the ukulele is related to a European instrument and the guitar from Spain, the relative tuning is the same. It should be tuned a perfect fourth up from a guitar, so the first string is tuned to an A, second string should be tuned to an E, third string will be a C, & the fourth string should be tuned to a G an octave up. Most ukuleles have a fourth string that is an octave above what the normal progression would be of most stringed instruments. If your G string is not tuned an octave up it’s a larger size than the average ukulele G string ...

Over the past 12 years, we've given over 3,000,000 lessons to happy customers around the world.

I wasn't sure how taking lessons via Skype would work, not having that in person interaction, but it's been really great. Phil is a really good teacher and has an immense amount of patience and encouragement. Even when I haven't had any time to practice and I'm struggling with the lesson, he insists that I'm doing great and boosts my confidence. This is the first instrument I've ever played and I've appreciated the bits of music history he's thrown in to help me connect things and the lessons are always so much fun too."

Aaron did an amazing job teaching the core fundamentals I needed to grow as a beginner. He is a talented musician that is also well educated and knowledgeable in music theory. When it comes to teaching, he is second to none! He worked with me to understand what my goals were and developed a plan to accomplish them. During this time Aaron went out of his way to quickly respond to any questions I had and provide me with videos he made "on the fly" so I could refer to them later while practicing at home. I will definitely be taking more lessons from Aaron in the future."
