To me, learning any instrument is about balancing the exercises with the fun material that makes you want to keep playing. I am a technique-focused teacher insofar as making sure any student of mine is avoiding bad and sometimes unhealthy habits in their playing. I do, however, try to find fun ways to work on technique, with the end goal being playing repertoire that is fun for the student. I believe technical exercises have their place in learning any instrument, but that it's important to spend the majority of your practice time on material which is ultimately enjoyable to play.

I do have certain sets of books I like to follow depending on the student's interests and age, but I am always happy to tweak the lesson plan to fit the student's needs. I also tend to supplement whichever books I'm using with material of my own, to make sure we're also covering important topics such as music theory and maybe a bit of relevant music history in the process.

About Joshua

Hi there! My name is Josh, and I'd love to be your guitar teacher! I've been playing guitar since I was eight, starting out playing rock and roll, then focusing on classical training for my college career. In both undergraduate and graduate school, I studied classical composition as a classical guit

I grew up on bossa, and wanted to learn how to play it. I had played guitar for years but mostly rock and folk. Josh was able to take what I knew and teach me how to play bossa music.

I never thought I'd study classical guitar, but Mr Josh showed me how important it is to have a good foundation to build from. Highly recommended!
Leeann
Great player and even better teacher! I didn't even know how to string my guitar when I started. Josh was patient and taught me everything I wanted to learn and more!

I was referred to JP by a friend and I am so happy with his lessons! I'm a songwriter and he teaches me in a way that makes sense to me and my craft. I finish my lessons feeling inspired and ready to apply everything I've learned so far about the guitar! JP is an awesome instructor!!

JP has been an amazing guitar teacher for the past few months. His style of teaching makes it so easy to learn during my in person lesson then practice on my own time at home. He’s patient and understanding and works at my pace. I highly recommend JP for anyone that has some guitar knowledge and looking to get better or to the person who’s never picked up a guitar. You won’t regret it.
Mason
JP is a phenomenal teacher/instructor and a musician himself. Has an amazing ear to grab any gtr riff, lick, or phrasing you want from any song you want to learn. He breaks down the theory into sections and steps, making it super easy to learn at your level and pace. He showed me how to find new chords within my progressions so I didn’t have to chase them up & down the neck of the guitar. Totally helped give me more confidence in my performance on stage. I highly recommend him to anyone at any level!

Guitar is among the most intimate performance instruments. Whether strumming it for rock 'n roll or caressing its strings for folk or classical music, it evokes an instantly recognizable emotional response. It's become the ideal instrument for expressing the vulnerability and uncertainty of love, the brief sting of agony, or any existential expression.

It's portable. It's loud enough to be heard in a crowd of voices, but quiet enough to be practiced in your bedroom. Musically its fretboard is based on the piano's chromatic scale. Its six strings accommodate both simple and complex voicing, depending on the player's skill or desired effect.

As a classically trained musician with 25 years of guitar performance experience in pop, folk, and rock music, I offer a range of styles, techniques, and comprehensive approaches to understanding and mastering this historic instrument, depending on your personal preferences. My focus is on exploration, discovery, and learner-directed lessons. My ...

"A.H.M.A.D. is no doubt one of the most humble, approachable, and skillful guitar teacher you can find around. I have been studying with Ahmad for the past 3 and a half months. Ahmad was not the first music instructor I had. He is however, the best one so far by a large margin. Since the first lesson Ahmad has been extremely professional and organized in his teaching methods. He is able to quickly identify my strengths and weaknesses as a player, tailor his lessons to fit my capabilities, and help me improve in great effectiveness.

I took lessons once a week with Ahmad, and every week I could see noticeable improvements because Ahmad assigned me homework that was fun and challenging but never frustrating. But beyond this, not only have I become a more skilled guitar player, through Ahmad help I was also able to apply a lot of the theoretical music knowledge in other aspects. When I hear a piece of music, I find that I am slowly able to identify parts of the music, break it down into logical steps, and connect the music to the fretboard of the guitar.

I am a college student with a busy schedule both on and off work, but with Ahmad I was able to greatly improve nonetheless. Thank you Ahmad , I really look forward to coming back to the area and be your student again."

"I have had one lesson with David, and it is enough to tell that he is a great teacher. He clearly knows how to play guitar. He is both encouraging and firm. He explained to me the expectations for my practice and what he wants me to learn by next week, but was also very understanding whenever I made a mistake. I told him about my experience in other hobbies, and from that he was able to use analogies that made sense to me that would help me learn the techniques he was teaching. I am very happy to have David as my guitar teacher."

"I really like Mike.

First off - he is SUPER punctual. The one time he was running late I even got a timely text message warning.

Second - he is very good at diagnosing issues and providing the right exercise/coaching.

Third - he is very flexible. I feel him supporting my music choices... not imposing his still or preferences.

And finally - he seems to me (I'm not good enough to judge) VERY skilled as a player... able to deconstruct songs, able to transpose quickly, able to find alternative strumming patterns.

I really feel very good about recommending him.

"Ahmad is very professional in his approach, he helps you evaluate the course and also tell him more about your goals. I had no knowledge of music at all and He did a god job in giving me some basic music theory crash course along with my daily practice sessions. He tailors the course as per your routine. its never one lesson fit all for him, he will gauge your level of expertise, your short and long term guitar goals(beginner, advanced etc) and then create a custom lesson for you. I really enjoyed and made good progress in a month's time. Thanks Ahmad!"
