I've been a guitarist my whole life, and I've been a teacher the past 10 years. I have a passion for helping students like you learn what YOU want to learn, and creating a clear path to your goals. I have a Bachelors in music from Columbia College Chicago, a thriving arts school in the heart of downtown Chicago. I've toured extensively as a songwriter, and written and recorded dozens of albums with the Chicago band Minor Characters. I now live in Los Angeles. I've helped beginner and intermediate students along into forming their own bands, play open mics, recitals, or just for themselves. Let's talk about what you want to do and if this is a good fit!

I studied jazz guitar with Derek DiCenzo at Ohio State University, and have performed extensively in the genres of rock, blues, country, and classical music.

Since 1998, I have taught as many as forty private students per week, many of whom have gone on to pursue the instrument through college, conservatory, and performance.

I spend a lot of time gearing my lessons to each specific student. Obviously we will learn songs that you are interested in. But in addition to that I write out specific exercises to help my students learn while also making it something that is fun and interesting to play so that we are not tied solely to learning from a book when it is not necessary. I can also help with songwriting, improvisation and other creative pursuits. The genres I am well versed in are pop, rock, classical, jazz, blues, funk, etc.

Private instruction includes everything from basic chording to advanced theory and technique, with a focus on the mechanics of the instrument. Topics covered include rhythm and technique studies, chord and scale theory, chord progressions, songwriting, musicality and performance, and improvisation. These topics are studied at a rate commensurate with the studentʼs ability.
