More important than my conservatory education and my experience as an educator and a performer is my passion for teaching music and acting and my undying belief that anyone can learn to be a musician and an actor.

I'm currently available to teach lessons in my own St. Augustine home studio and online around the globe.

I'm a cum laude graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey and a winner of its merit scholarship. I studied classical music there, grateful to have been taught by the likes of tenor Thomas Faracco, and renowned voice scientist and pedagogue, Dr. Scott McCoy.

After performing with the New York and Royal Philharmonics, the New Jersey and Virginia Symphonies, the American Boy Choir and the internationally renowned opera star, Andrea Bocelli, studying opera and piano at Westminster Choir College a
nd performance art and improvisational acting at East Carolina University in North Carolina, and appearing in shows and pageants across the east coast, I found my life's work in 2003 when I began teaching music.

I've taught hundreds of different students since 2003 with great success, from 5-year-olds with special needs to middle-aged professional opera singers, from a professor in Saudi Arabia to a 65-year-old doctor of music, from kids of Radio Disney to students of the famed Actors Studio in New York, from busy stay-at-home parents to retirees with bucket lists, from CEOs to touring singer-songwriters.

I've created and led a workshop about singing called, "The Whole Body Singer". I've written dozens of articles about music and music education for the blog at TakeLessons.com.

My extensive knowledge of the voice has encouraged and empowered hundreds of singers and prepared many of them to win competitions, pageants and auditions, as well as roles in operas and musicals, including lead roles in Limelight Theater and Curtis Camp productions. When a student comes to me in need of voice coaching, my job is to get to the root of mental blocks, to reveal why and how she's not singing at her optimum.

Before I received formal training at a conservatory, I learned piano on my own, and both have prepared me to teach almost anyone, with any experience, how to play.

The intensive training and education that I received at Westminster Choir College in songwriting, music theory and sight reading has benefited my students at every level.

My current work as singer and keyboardist in the acoustic folk rock duo, Timberwood, has strengthened my knowledge of a broad range of styles and genres. As a lifelong learner, I have a strong commitment to continuing my education. That's why I studied songwriting online with the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2014.

In the lessons that I teach, I'm flexible, positive and encouraging. While I want my students to have fun and love music, not dread it, I expect hard work and persistence. I am caring, patient, nurturing, and compassionate.
In piano lessons, I usually allow the student to choose a piece with which to warm up and then move on to technique and repertoire.
In voice lessons, I usually warm up the singer and discuss technique and sight singing before focusing on song choices. Joan Frey Boytim wrote a book for voice that I like to use, and I like the Estelle Liebling exercises for the more advanced singer. Hanon exercises are a big part of my piano curriculum, and I enjoy the Bastien and Alfred books for young and old. I have used completely random songs pulled out of a piano bench and a karaoke CD for kids. I will use almost anything I can get my hands on if it means effectively teaching music.

Acting lessons consist of exercises and games that apply learned concepts, with an emphasis on stage acting and Meisner technique, as well as monologue and audition coaching.

Currently, I have only online availability for guitar students.
Students under the age of twelve will use the Alfred Guitar Book for Kids. All other students will start with the Hal Leonard Guitar Method.

Parents, siblings and spouses are always welcome to observe lessons quietly.

Summer is fantastic. We first had her as an in-home instructor in Manhattan, and now that she has moved to California, we have her online. She is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about music, has introduced the kids to different genres, music theory and online music practice apps to keep them engaged and learning. She gives them homework "listening assignments" to help develop their ear for music. The kids have grown so much in their love of music and their ability to sight-read, play and understand music theory.

Summer is the best! She has taught my children throughout their middle childhood into their teens and during this time has introduced them to many different genres of music, which they have particularly enjoyed. In that way, she has not only taught them to play the piano excellently but has instilled in them an appreciation for music. In addition to being super-nice, patient, open-minded and very well organized, she challenges her students ceaselessly and pushes them to reach their potential. I've played all my life and have my own band. I started teaching guitar in 2008. I've worked with hundreds of students taking beginners to advanced level of playing. I offer lessons from 2 studios located in Tulsa and Broken Arrow. I teach from a variety of books and programs to help students become well rounded musicians. As for equipment, I use Marshall, Fender, and Line 6 amps, Ibanez and Gibson guitars, Guitar Pro for creating lessons, Garage Band for recording, and have a large collection of guitar effects pedals.
On average within 2 - 3 months a beginning student will be reading, counting, and playing songs.
My goal is to keep my students interested and happy while making sure they develop the proper musical foundation/knowledge that will allow them grow, overcome their musical walls, and become the musician they desire to be.
My philosophy is to teach students to be smart musicians. It does you no good if you can play a song but don't know what you are actually doing. So,

Music is my passion. I've been playing music since I was a child but didn't get serious with it until I was 14, that's when I got my first electric guitar. So, from then on I've been playing and studying music for over 16 years. I play and teach guitar, piano, drums, and bass guitar. I don't use just one method, I pull from my arsenal of acquired knowledge, books, and my own studies. I keep lessons fun and interesting. A normal lesson with me would consist of two parts the first 30 minutes we would focus on learning and practicing warm ups, exercises, licks, notes, scales, chords, arpeggios, timing, rudiments, dynamics, ear training, theory, technique, etc. And the second half we would work on a song or jam together. Depending on the age and level of student, after spending six months studying with me you will be a rock star! LOL. Well, you may not have a recording contract, but you will have gained a volume of knowledge and taken your playing up a few levels. It's all about how much time and practice you put in and how much you want it. Every student has there own pace and desire so I do my part to help them become the best that they want to be.

My name is Ruthie and I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in May of 2007 with a Bachelors of Music Education degree with an emphasis in voice. Through my collegiate experiences, I had the privilege of participating in a Concert Choir, Barbershop/A Capella Ensembles, Vocal Jazz Ensembles and Performance in Solo Voice. The jazz program at UNC is one of the finest in the United States, and to be selected as a member of one of the vocal jazz ensembles was an honor in itself. From these experiences I have gained knowledge about the importance of vocal performance and music advocacy. I accepted a position as a general music teacher in Colorado in the fall of 2007 and then worked part time for a school in Laguna Niguel, CA until June of 2012. I picked up the guitar over ten years ago to accompany myself while I sang. Having developed some skills, I can now offer my students the basics of guitar so that, in a pressure-free and supportive environment, they can truly get going. Excellent first voice lesson. Jillian is warm, encouraging, and very knowledgeable. I was surprised how many "technical" issues she introduced me to (optimal breathing & how best to practice it at home; appropriate use of falsetto at upper limit of bass voice range, etc.) . Looking forward to continued lessons. (Much better use of what used to be my copay for psychotherapy! I've also joined rehearsals with new Encore-NYC chorale group in Manhattan, for people over 55. Music is giving me a real emotional lift in my retirement.)

I cannot learn something without wanting to immediately begin sharing what I know. That's what inspired me to begin teaching, and it continues to drive me today.

My credo is, "Take fun seriously." There is a reason we say that we "play" music; it is meant to be entertaining, for the listener and the performer. I know you want to learn to play an instrument so that you have one more pleasure in your life, and not to take up a new profession. But I also assume the highest potential in my students. He is currently a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Jazz Education Network, Music Teachers National Association, National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and an Honorary Member of Tau Beta Sigma. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen, Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr., Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Carl's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. He has had additional instruction in lessons and masterclasses from Gary Foster, Dr. Joseph Murphy, Dr. Michael Cox, Bob Sheppard, Johnny Salinas, Dr. Kimberly Goddard Loeffert, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel, Dr. Jonathan Nichol, Dr. Griffin Campbell, Dr. James Laughlin, and Dr. David Dees. Carl's jazz directors have included Dan Gailey, Bob McCurdy, Dr. Jonathan Martin, Dr. Keith Talley, and Dr. Terry Segress.

Carl enjoys recording several instruments in his home studio and composing new music. His compositions that have been performed include his big band arrangement of Cat Battles by Joshua Redman, September in the Refrain (alto saxophone and electronics), Funk-o-matic (jazz combo), Smooth (jazz combo), and The Deadline Arrives at Dawn (alto saxophone and electronics). As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Carl performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Carl directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

Carl is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale. In April 2017, Carl performed solo tenor saxophone and orchestral clarinet in Ethan Bortnick's national PBS Special called "Generations of Music," which featured special guest, Peter Yarrow, from Peter, Paul and Mary.

Dr. Speath"s encouraging and forceful instruction has brought me in only five months to a point where I can actually make music. This has been a dream of mine for a life time and it is being realized. I've even bought glasses like Paul Desmond and wear saxophone themed t-shirts. I teach music the way it was taught to me, and I had in my opinion some of the best teachers in the world.

I like to start every student with a unique approach to their individual playing style. I work closely with the student from the first minute of the first lesson, first simply getting to know the student's comfort level with material, playing style, and proficiency level. From there I go into specific topics that need improvement - for some students, this might be basic techniques, and for others may be advanced concepts. I like to walk the line between nurturing and tough love - I think that the best teacher is the experience of stepping outside of your comfort zone, with someone there to point you in the right direction to walk.

Hi everyone! My name is Zack and I'm a guitar and violin instructor hailing from Chicago, IL, and currently residing in Los Angeles, CA. I’ve been playing violin since age 9 and guitar since age 10, gaining experience ever since playing live and in the studio, in bands and as a freelance artist. I graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2015 with a Bachelors Degree in Music Performance and now play in a metal band and pursue a freelance career. As a young student, I spent many years as a member of Midwest Young Artists, performing and studying classical music with Dr. Allen Dennis and jazz guitar with the renowned Frank Portelese, playing venues such as the Harris Theater in Chicago. I toured Greece and Peru playing violin, and studied classical performance with Vadim Mazo of Illinois Wesleyan University in Prague at Ameropa ’06. I was
a violin student of Gail Lilja-Kirkeeng from a young age, and was taught guitar by Rex Carroll of christian heavy metal band, Whitecross, and later when on to study rock and metal guitar with Joe Stump and Jon Finn at Berklee College of Music. I have opened for acts such as Five Finger Death Punch and Rob Zombie, and even accompanied Dream Theater onstage as the principal second violinist for their live DVD release, Breaking the Fourth Wall. My musical background is mostly based in classical music on violin, and rock music on guitar, although I consider myself very well versed in many different styles. Topics I generally like to begin new students with are scales and modes and how to apply them, basic posture and correct pick/bow technique and left hand placement, and the note names as they apply to the instrument and basic sight reading. I firmly believe that every student is unique with different styles, voices, and goals and that any lesson plan should reflect that. Whatever you want to learn, I’m here to help!

I believe that learning music should be as fun and inspiring as it can be to play. We all have a vast wellspring of creative energy within us, and the goal of the relationship between the student and the teacher is to help nurture and develop that latent talent. For this reason, my approach to teaching music is highly individualized. I start out with the premise that the student has unique gifts and my job is to help them discover what those are, and develop and refine them in order to make beautiful and deeply satisfying music, through whatever instrument and in whatever style they are drawn towards.

Depending on one's starting level of experience, some basic exercises will be assigned to develop core skills, with increasing levels of technical challenge and complexity. Elements of music theory will be woven into practical lessons. Students will have the choice to incorporate material from popular and familiar music into their studies, and as they progress they will be encouraged to

I began teaching acoustic guitar and voice lessons in 1984, also offering harmonium and tabla lessons a few years later. Some of my students have approached music mainly for personal enjoyment and deepening their self-identity, while others have used the skills they learned in their careers.

I've found that in order to be a successful teacher, I must be patient and compassionate, and try to always put myself in the shoes of a learner. I feel my greatest teaching strengths come from listening to my students, as well as drawing from my experience as a singer-songwriter and fingerstyle guitarist.

I'm grateful for my exposure to the music of different cultures, especially the fascinating polyrhythms of traditional African drumming and the deeply moving melodies of Indian Classical music. I had the good fortune to study these disciplines int
ensively with Master Teachers during my time at Dartmouth College, at Wesleyan University, and through independent studies in India. My teacher training at Pacific Oaks College further deepened my appreciation of cultural diversity as well as my sensitivity to different learning styles.

This experience has enriched my own compositions, as well as my ability to connect with learners from diverse cultural backgrounds, and to help guide people in developing a personal style free from artificial boundaries of genre.

Currently, I'm working on recording an album of original songs based on the poetry of Rumi, Hafiz and other mystics.
