I had a great experience because Catherine is an amazing instructor.
She taught lessons with a high degree of professionalism and care. As a novice, I was able to learn a lot because Catherine was patient and attentive to my learning style.

My two oldest children (one more advanced in piano than the other) began taking lessons with Catherine just this year. They have both shown significant improvement and love her as an instructor. They also look forward to practicing in between lessons. We could not be happier.

My violin and viola students study classical Russian technique--used by the best players in history. It involves efficient use of the body, both to avoid injury when playing and also to get the best possible sound from the instrument. Students progress in technique, musicality, and music theory.

About Elana
Hello,

My name is Elana. I'm a professional violinist and enjoy teaching students of all ages and levels. My students have ranged from ages 4-64. Their goals have ranged from pure enjoyment to those considering a career in music. My goal is to help each student play to the best of their abilities and for them to enjoy the lessons. Violin is my passion, which comes through in my enthusiasm during lessons. I am gentle and patient but also honest and very particular about what to look for when practicing.

I take great pride in teaching the Russian method. Not only is the technique I teach used by the best violinists of all time, it also emphasizes efficient and correct use of the body to avoid injury and develop a tone with richness and projection.

What I look for in a student is a commitment to practicing every day. It's an
adjustment in the beginning for many, but once established simply becomes part of the day, like brushing your teeth. Over time, students hear improvements from practicing consistently and this creates a very positive experience. The violin becomes a source of joy and confidence.

Violin lessons help develop skills such as coordination and focus at the highest level, persistence, confidence, creativity, patience, and many other "life" skills whose benefits extend far beyond music lessons. Many people who achieve success in a career outside music later in life often credit their music lessons as having been key in that process.

As far as my musical background, I received my music degree from Rutgers University, where I was a recipient of the Marryott Music Scholarship. Upon graduation I freelanced as a violinist in the NYC metro area. My major teachers include Neil Weintrob and Lewis Kaplan.

As a teacher I have 20 years of experience. I've worked in various programs and currently teach violin and viola lessons at a local private school, in addition to running a private studio of violin and piano students. My violin students have been concertmaster, principal players, and section players in orchestras such as All-County, Region I, and NY Youth Symphony.

Feel free to contact me with any additional questions you may have. I look forward to working with you.

I am a Masters of Music student at the Juilliard School with extensive experience performing as a classical violinist and violist in solo, chamber, and orchestral music. I have been playing the violin since the age of 5 and have participated recently in many well known music programs such as the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, the Music Academy of the West, New York String Orchestra Seminar, and Aspen Music Festival. I have experience teaching in violin sections in orchestra and group classes through the Tufts Community Music Program. I grew up learning through the Suzuki method, so I encourage learning by ear and emphasize the importance of efficient and organized practice. In a lesson with me, I would focus on learning classical violin technique in order to produce the best sound, while allowing the student to pick their repertoire based on their musical preferences, however always encouraging exploration of the classical genre!

About Julia
I'm a Juilliard masters student studying Viola and working towards a professional career! I teach both violin and viola, and am also available for practice help sessions or one time coachings. I have a Bachelor of Science from Tufts University, and I have studied at multiple well known music programs including the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, the Music Academy of the West, the New York String Orchestra Seminar, and the Aspen Music Festival. I have been playing the violin since I was 5 years old and viola since I was 15. I grew up learning through the Suzuki method, so I teach with an emphasis on developing a good ear as well as good instrumental technique. The most important thing I want my students to develop is a love for music in all its diverse forms and the instrumental technique that will allow them to involve themselves in that
musical world!

Born and raised in Jerusalem Israel, I was always surrounded by music. I started my violin lessons at the age of five and it was my first teacher who instilled the love for music and violin in me. It is the same feeling that keeps me constantly fascinated and challenged by music to this day and it is the experience I strive to pass on to my students. Starting my private studio in 2012 and teaching since has been a great source of satisfaction for me. Many of my students continued to study professionally and became orchestra members.
While I do specialize in classical instruction, I am able to instruct students in a variety of genres, including Jazz, Pop and Klezmer. In addition, I develop my own system which is based on the jewish russian tradition of violin playing and approach. This is the system that I grew up with and which have produced some of the world’s finest musicians in the past century.

About Avital
My career developments are primarily in music, but I also pursue interest in composing, philosophy and art. Currently working towards my PSD degree from the New School under Lucie Robert, I hold a Bachelor of Music degree from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and a Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Have performed in various venues including Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, Berlin Konzerthaus, Royal Albert Hall, Heichal haTarbut Tel Aviv and the Franz Liszt Conservatory.
I live in Brooklyn, New York and play on a Jules Grandjon Violin made in 1851.

I have over two decades of continuing professional performance experience in Classical solo violin, and have taught masterclasses in six continents. Though my expertise is in Classical violin, I draw from many influences, to many of which I was exposed in my tenure as the presenter of a TV program in Japan, "Untitled Music," the Guinness Book of World Records longest ever running Classical music show. There, I spoke and interviewed guests from many different genres in concert-style settings, as well as periodically performing with them. In my teaching, I stress efficiency of practice, musical authenticity, and open-mindedness.

About Ryu
Ryu has established himself as a significant voice in classical music, with a large and growing public in Asia, North America and Europe. Ryu’s career began at age seven when he made his debut at the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan, playing Paganini’s Violin Concerto No.1. Since then, Ryu has appeared as a soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including National Symphony Orchestra (DC), London Philharmonic, Münchner Philharmoniker, Wiener Symphoniker, Sydney Symphony, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Orchestre national de Lyon, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Hamburger Symphoniker and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. He has worked with conductors Lorin Maazel, Tan Dun, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Fabio Luisi, Leonard Slatkin, Kent Nagano, Myung-Whun Chung, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Andrés Orozco-Estrada and
Jonathan Nott. Ryu has performed in many of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Tokyo Suntory Hall, Sydney Opera House, Shanghai Grand Theater, Taipei National Concert Hall, Vienna Musikverein, Munich’s Herkulessaal and the Philharmonic Hall Gasteig. In January 2018 Ryu celebrated Bernstein’s 100th Anniversary playing his masterpiece “Serenade” with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, and in March he joins the New York Philharmonic touring Asia under the baton of Maestro Jaap van Zweden.

Ryu’s philanthropic work includes working with student musicians throughout the world, mentoring their development and conducting master classes in conjunction with the world’s top institutions. Efforts include the “Ryu Excellence in Music Initiative Scholarship” with the NYC Department of Education, as well as collaborations with institutions such as the Juilliard School and the Harvard Bach Society Orchestra. He does extensive musical outreach in developing countries in Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa.

In Japan Ryu’s features in media are numerous, including his own documentary “Ryu’s Odyssey”, a chronicle of his career and personal life from 1996-2006. He has served as spokesperson for the East Japan Railway Company. From October 2015 to March 2017, Ryu appeared weekly on TV Asahi’s show, Untitled Concert, a nationally televised program in Japan listed in Guinness World Records as “the longest-running TV program for classical music.”

Ryu records for Deutsche Grammophon in collaboration with Universal Classics Japan. In May 2011 he graduated from Harvard University with a BA in Physics, and is currently studying the violin with Prof. Ana Chumachenco. A member of the US-Japan Council, Ryu has been honored with an award from the Japanese American Bar Association as a Japanese-American leader. He holds a 3rd degree black belt from the Japan Karate Association and the World Karate Federation, and is fluent in multiple languages including English, Japanese, French and Chinese. Ryu performs on the Stradivarius 1722 violin “Jupiter” on loan to him from Nippon Music Foundation.

Disclaimer: I have cats! Must have minimum prerequisite experience of 7-10 years. Because of my sporadic touring schedule, I might not always be able to teach consistently. Therefore, if you're considering me, I highly suggest thinking of my lessons as supplementary.

By observing, hypothesizing, deducting, and problem-solving, my students will gain the skills needed not only to succeed in music, but also in every stage of life. I offer both lessons and coachings, in which we will cover violin technique (intonation, sound, phrasing, musicality, performance technique, audition preparation, etc.), and basic music theory (musical forms, rhythm, compositional techniques, etc.)
Lessons are tailored to the students individual levels and needs.

Looking forward to hearing from you!!

My daughter had played violin for a year before coming to Ariel and let me tell you this was the best decision I've made. Living in such a diverse area like nyc, you meet a lot of artists and good players but sometimes you just need someone who's good at teaching. Well Ariel is the perfect combination of both. She demonstrates skills of a very accomplished player while having the expertise and knowledge of a great teacher. My daughter is very stubborn and has a a very difficult time changing bad habits. Within a month, Ariel completely changed her bad posture and hand position! I am very happy with Ariel's teaching style and I am sure that my daughter will continue to grow under her teaching.

I came to Ariel with no previous experience with violin and she has helped me grow so much as a musician. I've always regretted not learning an instrument when I was younger but Ariel has been so helpful in making my dreams come true. She is the most patient and encouraging person I've ever had the opportunity to work with. Those 2 things alone would seal the deal but she also has such an extensive violin career and it is truly a pleasure to study with her.
