Chris was very patient with me. I had special challenges due to be an older student that started later in life. We communicated very well--asking and answering questions. Chris knew how to help me as I am challenged with intonation. He did not let me slide which is an excellent quality in an instructor.

When I had questions or problems that we were not able to figure out between the two of us he went to his instructor to ask. He was not afraid to admit that he didn't know. He respected me as a scientist who had challenging questions.

Overall, I highly recommend Chris as an instructor for viola.

Chris is super knowledgeable, flexible to make lessons work over Skype, and attentive to make sure the lessons are tailored to what I am trying to learn as a growing pianist. I’ve had a great experience, grown a lot, and look forward to more lessons!

I really enjoy taking saxophone lessons with Ana. She is extremely knowledgeable in topics related to saxophone, jazz, and improvisation. Her lessons are very organized, intellectually stimulating, and she provides just the right amount of structure while allowing me the space to develop my own creative ideas. I highly recommend taking a lesson with her. You’ll thank me later!
Christine
I have played clarinet for 5 years now and am working on music for solo pieces and band class. Ana gives me lots of material to work on and I am feeling more confident about my playing!
Amanda D.
I'm a classically-trained flutist and have been taking Jazz improv and theory lessons with Ana for four months. I have learned so much from her - she has opened my eyes to jazz and made it fun and approachable. The lessons have given me a deeper appreciation when listening to jazz, improved my listening skills, and made me a better player. I never thought I would be able to do improv, and after a few weeks of lessons it came very easily to me. I highly recommend Ana to anyone who wants to learn jazz improv, regardless of what instrument they play!

Music should never simply be a rote-learning process. We develop real artistry. My students learn how to interpret, transform, and create music. From the first lesson, we experiment with various musical "ingredients" and revisit these tools often as we move through a lesson series or repertoire. Students explore a variety of styles and learn to read, compose, and improvise. Students as young as five have created their own theme and variations on a favorite tune with these techniques.

"My son has been learning violin with Mr. Tigran since last 8 months. He started with very basic 8 months ago and last week his middle school won 12 trophies and he was at the center of the performance. Thanks to Mr. Tigran. Mr. Tigran has the ability to come to student level and bring a change. He is soft, polite and professional. My son is fully involved in violin now and looking towards next level. I am very pleased with his performance and looking forward that one day he will be playing like Mr. Tigran. During the last 8 months there were some occasions where my son was not able to meet the schedule appointment and Mr. Tigran was very accommodating with these situations. Mr. Tigran has the ability to relate music with daily life examples so kids can understand it better. A good communication is extremely important for a teacher and he posses this skill and knows how to apply it. I can see my son will grow very well with his music in future."

"I started working with Alyssa in person when she was teaching violin in Salt Lake City. Once she moved to Los Angeles I agreed to try the online lessons. I have found this method of learning to be very valuable. Alyssa has a unique way of teaching. While the traditional principles of violin playing are taught Alyssa includes mindfulness and breath in her methods. She also introduces improvisation and takes music beyond its notes on the page."

Violin Lessons in Houston

By Rebecca L. - Houston Violin Teacher

Are you interested in learning a musical instrument and having fun at the same time? The violin may be the perfect instrument to pick up! My name is Rebecca, and after living and teaching in both Taiwan and New York, I am now studying and teaching around the Houston area.

I believe that music has a broader meaning than many people realize. Music is not the only thing people take away from lessons; music develops the ability to concentrate and develops characteristics such as patience and dedication. That being said, music teaches very important life skills. Without a doubt, music is a great and special hobby.

Houston is a wonderful city to experience many diverse and unique music events! A great number of the country’s elite mu

...

sical art programs are all located in the heart of Houston, such as the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, Da Camera, The Mercury, and Rice Shepherd School of Music. Attending these programs and events can provide a great inspiration to you while taking violin lessons in Houston.

The Houston Symphony performs around three days a week at the Jones Hall, featuring top musicians from all over the world. Furthermore, The Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet are both brilliant performances to attend if you are wanting to see or experience something different. Uniquely, Da Camera concerts offer a broad range of repertoire, along with music styles ranging from classical to jazz.

On the contrary, The Mercury places a strong emphasis on the Baroque style of music. That being said, it’s the ideal orchestra to check out for those who are fans of early classical music! Equally important, The Mercury participates in community outreach and education. Additionally, the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra at Rice University is commonly known for being the best university orchestra within the United States. The symphony orchestra performs multiple concerts per semester, which are generally free for the public.

Family concerts are great opportunities for children to be introduced to music at a young age. Despite having never touched an instrument before, children often leave a concert feeling inspired and wowed. Often, it is the fun associated with listening, learning, and exploring different musical instruments that piques a child’s interest in music. The Shepherd School of Music organizes family concerts appropriate for all ages. Various instruments are shown in the lobby for kids to explore and see before the concert. For more information, all events are posted on the school calendar here: http://music.rice.edu/calendar/.

Last but not least, the Houston Youth Symphony is another wonderful resource for teens to experience and get involved in. It is composed of four orchestras made for students at different levels, where they can rehearse and perform with many students like themselves!

If music is an interest of yours, buying concert tickets are simple and affordable. Whether attending a concert as a passion or out of sheer boredom, individuals who walk in are guaranteed to take away a unique perspective on music. Concerts also make great family outings - thus are definitely worth a visit! Finally, attending concerts not only helps students become better musicians, it will also inspire them on many different levels. So, good luck in your violin lessons in Houston, and may you enjoy the wonderful selection of musical opportunities open to you!
