Beginners typically take 60 minute classes once per week at a recurring time. Young children typically take half hour classes and older children, adult musicians and those on a budget typically take 45 minute classes. The most common lesson length to start with is 60 minutes, as the teacher will need to tune your instrument and help you get set up. Some students choose to take lessons twice per week when a concert is coming up, to catch up from a vacation or if they just want to make faster progress.
In class, you will learn new techniques, receive guidance on how to achieve the best sound possible and learn songs that you like and that interest you. You are expected to take this guidance and practice it thoroughly at home until you feel comfortable with it, so that when you are in class next, the teacher can move on to a new concept or skill which builds upon the skill practiced at home. They will only move you forward once you can do the more basic technique.
When you have a love of teaching, you have a seemingly endless resource of patience. This is because what the student sees as "patient" is really just a small step in the educational process. It is a fraction of time just before a correction. When you have something new to teach, whether it is a new technique, or a correction of something being done improperly, and you know exactly how to break it down so it is understandable and accomplishable, you know it is always a short matter of time before the student gets it. And by short, I mean a matter
I respect others and what they feel and have to say. I treat others as I would want to be treated and lessons are always a pleasure to my students, because it is a pleasure for me to teach them.
I have been playing for over 26 years. I have played with a multitude of local orchestras and bands and have done countless studio recording sessions and live shows. All of this experience comes through in my teaching either directly (when it comes time for you to perform) or incrementally.
When you are learning, there is a vast sea of information. Not all of that knowledge is equal in importance. It is incredibly important to be able to distinguish what is important and what is not very important. All of my real-life experience, and continuing experience reveals itself in the form of ensuring my students know what is truly important.
Lest you get the idea that I am a wishy-washy, undemanding teacher, I can assure you this is not the case. Lessons are fun, but that is because they are productive. You will walk away being able to do something, and that requires hard work, and practice.

I can even work with you if you don't have a winning attitude, but it makes it more fun when you do!
HOW FAST CAN I EXPECT RESULTS?
Some students who were musicians previously leave the first lesson being able to play their first song. Most students however, who have never played an instrument before, can expect to be comfortable bowing (a huge part of the process - half the sound!) within the first few weeks, and will then move on to learning songs. We will be learning sheet music as well, on a very, very easy gradient. After the first couple months, I expect you to tell me which song it is you might like to learn most so that we can start working on it.

I teach violin at the New School for Leadership and the Arts, mostly to novice players, and I have experience teaching violin to children of all ages.
My primary instrument is guitar, which I've played for about 25 years in many different bands, styles, and genres. I studied music and classical guitar at University of Central Florida, and during that time I also helped teach violin to a class of third graders. I'm not a pro violinist, but I have plenty of experience working with novice players, helping them develop proper technique, sight reading, ear training, and other skills needed to advance to the next level.
I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is what I'm passionate about and it's what I enjoy. I want to inspire that same passion into the hearts and minds of others.

I am a laid-back teacher, fun, and I focus on the needs, abilities, and ambitions of the student. In turn, students must realize that learning an instrument takes a lot of work and dedication. One can't expect to learn very much if s/he only practices or thinks about the instrument during the lesson. If the student is willing to put some time into practicing, then I will help them go far!

My main goal as a teacher is to help my student realize their full potential and talent as a musician. I firmly believe that every single child has the ability to succeed at learning a musical instrument. With patience, open-mindedness, humor and love, a good teacher can help his/her students tap into their musical voices. With practice and patience, we can develop a solid foundation and work towards learning music.
I believe strongly in teaching what the student loves, so I am more than happy to work with my students on many styles of music, ranging from classical to musical theater to pop songs to bluegrass tunes. Strings have always been a great love of mine--violin takes dedication of posture to be comfortable, and a comfortable sound is a beautiful one. It is important that you select a teacher who can really push you towards a beautiful tone and musical expression, as well as one who knows what they are doing regarding the fine details of technique.
Currently I'm studying at Kean University, for a degree in Music Education K-12 with Teacher Certification.
I am a 3.8 GPA student who has been studying cello since I was 8 and piano since I was 3, and the other strings instruments since I was 15. I have always been good at all subjects, but have had a love for music. Music can benefit the brain in incredible ways, especially for children! Please ask me about these benefits and I can give you supportive academic research.
I have a permissive teaching style that is sensitive to developmental disability and mental illness, but also can be quite harrowing and strict if you have the desire to truly become a great musician. I practice all my instruments daily--I expect my students to do the same. :)

Born and raised in Jerusalem Israel, I was always surrounded by music. I started my violin lessons at the age of five and it was my first teacher who instilled the love for music and violin in me. It is the same feeling that keeps me constantly fascinated and challenged by music to this day and it is the experience I strive to pass on to my students. Starting my private studio in 2012 and teaching since has been a great source of satisfaction for me. Many of my students continued to study professionally and became orchestra members.
While I do specialize in classical instruction, I am able to instruct students in a variety of genres, including Jazz, Pop and Klezmer. In addition, I develop my own system which is based on the jewish russian tradition of violin playing and approach. This is the system that I grew up with and which have produced some of the world’s finest musicians in the past century.
I live in Brooklyn, New York and play on a Jules Grandjon Violin made in 1851.
I have over two decades of continuing professional performance experience in Classical solo violin, and have taught masterclasses in six continents. Though my expertise is in Classical violin, I draw from many influences, to many of which I was exposed in my tenure as the presenter of a TV program in Japan, "Untitled Music," the Guinness Book of World Records longest ever running Classical music show. There, I spoke and interviewed guests from many different genres in concert-style settings, as well as periodically performing with them. In my teaching, I stress efficiency of practice, musical authenticity, and open-mindedness.
Ryu’s philanthropic work includes working with student musicians throughout the world, mentoring their development and conducting master classes in conjunction with the world’s top institutions. Efforts include the “Ryu Excellence in Music Initiative Scholarship” with the NYC Department of Education, as well as collaborations with institutions such as the Juilliard School and the Harvard Bach Society Orchestra. He does extensive musical outreach in developing countries in Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa.
In Japan Ryu’s features in media are numerous, including his own documentary “Ryu’s Odyssey”, a chronicle of his career and personal life from 1996-2006. He has served as spokesperson for the East Japan Railway Company. From October 2015 to March 2017, Ryu appeared weekly on TV Asahi’s show, Untitled Concert, a nationally televised program in Japan listed in Guinness World Records as “the longest-running TV program for classical music.”
Ryu records for Deutsche Grammophon in collaboration with Universal Classics Japan. In May 2011 he graduated from Harvard University with a BA in Physics, and is currently studying the violin with Prof. Ana Chumachenco. A member of the US-Japan Council, Ryu has been honored with an award from the Japanese American Bar Association as a Japanese-American leader. He holds a 3rd degree black belt from the Japan Karate Association and the World Karate Federation, and is fluent in multiple languages including English, Japanese, French and Chinese. Ryu performs on the Stradivarius 1722 violin “Jupiter” on loan to him from Nippon Music Foundation.

I had to read books, watch videos, ask people how they practice, use my ears because I had no scores to any of the music I wanted to play, explore. I had to criticize myself, I had to remain conscious about my playing and what I think is missing in my playing in comparison to other players, analyze what is it that excites me in one’s music or playing. Most of all, I had the privilege to remain attentive to any new idea being suggested to me, because no one ever taught me what the “truth” is.
Be your own teacher. That is perhaps the only “truth” I would force upon my students.
As part of my teaching philosophy, I'm seeking to not only teach my students the skills they wish to acquire but to show them how to determine and teach themselves new skills they 'need' or desire to acquire.
