Beginners typically take 60 minute classes once per week at a recurring time. Young children typically take half hour classes and older children, adult musicians and those on a budget typically take 45 minute classes. The most common lesson length to start with is 60 minutes, as the teacher will need to tune your instrument and help you get set up. Some students choose to take lessons twice per week when a concert is coming up, to catch up from a vacation or if they just want to make faster progress.
In class, you will learn new techniques, receive guidance on how to achieve the best sound possible and learn songs that you like and that interest you. You are expected to take this guidance and practice it thoroughly at home until you feel comfortable with it, so that when you are in class next, the teacher can move on to a new concept or skill which builds upon the skill practiced at home. They will only move you forward once you can do the more basic technique.
When you have a love of teaching, you have a seemingly endless resource of patience. This is because what the student sees as "patient" is really just a small step in the educational process. It is a fraction of time just before a correction. When you have something new to teach, whether it is a new technique, or a correction of something being done improperly, and you know exactly how to break it down so it is understandable and accomplishable, you know it is always a short matter of time before the student gets it. And by short, I mean a matter
I respect others and what they feel and have to say. I treat others as I would want to be treated and lessons are always a pleasure to my students, because it is a pleasure for me to teach them.
I have been playing for over 26 years. I have played with a multitude of local orchestras and bands and have done countless studio recording sessions and live shows. All of this experience comes through in my teaching either directly (when it comes time for you to perform) or incrementally.
When you are learning, there is a vast sea of information. Not all of that knowledge is equal in importance. It is incredibly important to be able to distinguish what is important and what is not very important. All of my real-life experience, and continuing experience reveals itself in the form of ensuring my students know what is truly important.
Lest you get the idea that I am a wishy-washy, undemanding teacher, I can assure you this is not the case. Lessons are fun, but that is because they are productive. You will walk away being able to do something, and that requires hard work, and practice.

HOW FAST CAN I EXPECT RESULTS?
Some students who were musicians previously leave the first lesson being able to play their first song. Most students however, who have never played an instrument before, can expect to be comfortable bowing (a huge part of the process - half the sound!) within the first few weeks, and will then move on to learning songs. We will be learning sheet music as well, on a very, very easy gradient. After the first couple months, I expect you to tell me which song it is you might like to learn most so that we can start working on it.

I am a Masters of Music student at the Juilliard School with extensive experience performing as a classical violinist and violist in solo, chamber, and orchestral music. I have been playing the violin since the age of 5 and have participated recently in many well known music programs such as the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, the Music Academy of the West, New York String Orchestra Seminar, and Aspen Music Festival. I have experience teaching in violin sections in orchestra and group classes through the Tufts Community Music Program. I grew up learning through the Suzuki method, so I encourage learning by ear and emphasize the importance of efficient and organized practice. In a lesson with me, I would focus on learning classical violin technique in order to produce the best sound, while allowing the student to pick their repertoire based on their musical preferences, however always encouraging exploration of the classical genre!
I have six years' professional experience teaching privately, and I specialize in Classical, Jazz, and Popular styles. Turkish American violinist, Zeynep A, started studying the violin at the age of 5 as part of her music therapy treatment for her diagnosis of speech delay and Auditory Processing Disorder. Almost immediately after being introduced to the violin, Zeynep began to speak and following a year and a half of violin studies, she had her first solo appearance with Vivaldi’s A minor Violin Concerto, after winning the Peabody Concerto Competition.
As a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician, Zeynep has appeared in a myriad of venues such as Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Kennedy Center Concert Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Moscow Conservatory Great Hall, Mariinsky II Theatre, and Strathmore Hall. Future engagements include performing as a soloist with the Presidential Symphony Orchestra of Turkey during their 2019 USA Tour and recording a CD with the Turkish recording label, Lila Muzik.
Zeynep is the first prize winner in many competitions, some of which include the Juilliard Concerto Competition, the Dorothy DeLay Fellowship Competition at the Aspen Music Festival and School, the National Philharmonic Concerto Competition, and the Goldie and Feder Memorial String Competition. Additionally, in 2015, Zeynep was awarded the Ataturk Youth Achievement Award by the Ataturk Society of America in Washington DC.
Zeynep is currently pursuing her master’s degree at the Juilliard School as a recipient of the Ahmet Ertegun Scholarship, the C.V. Starr Scholarship, and the Molly Frank and Aliki Perroti Scholarship under the tutelage of Naoko Tanaka. Former teachers have included Oleg Rylatko, Aaron Rosand and Shirley Givens.
Community outreach and service has played an important part in Zeynep’s musical life. In 2013, Zeynep co-founded the group Sonatas Stopping Starvation. The project uses musical excellence to help develop citizens and leaders within the arts and the greater community. Their mission is to be of service as artists and citizens to organizations that work to fight hunger. Along with a school-wide food drive, they gave their first benefit concert in November 2013 at the Juilliard School. Zeynep is also a Morse Teaching Artist Fellow, a Gluck Community Service Fellow, and a Music Advancement Program Fellow.
As a Turkish American, Zeynep receives frequent invitations to perform in major music halls in Turkey. She was featured at age 9 on Turkish National Television while performing works of Kreisler and Massanet and she has worked with the violinist Cihat Askin in Cihat Askin and Friends project (CAKA) with performances including the opening gala of Istanbul Toy Museum.
Aside from music, Zeynep enjoys taking business classes at Columbia University through the Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange program, drinking tea, biking, and being an avid dog lover.

Hi! Welcome to my page! my name is Jen. I’m active freelance orchestral musician and violin & viola instructor in NYC and NJ area.
I welcome students of all ages, all levels of commitment and all ability levels. I have years of experience teaching with Suzuki books and other method training books. My lessons are always planned in a way that fits each students individually. I like to establish my lesson in a way where students learn correct techniques and explore their musical senses. I want my students to have fun learning music.
Most recently, I worked as graduate teaching assistant at University of Nevada Reno, where I taught undergraduate violin and viola students.
I received Bachelor of Music in violin performance at The Juilliard School. Later, I studied viola at Peabody Conservatory.
I hold two degrees in classical violin performance (B.M. from DePaul University and MM from New York University), and I have taught violin at NYU for the last two years. I feel very qualified AND excited about being part of anyone's journey on the violin!
Libby began her journey on the violin at the age of 4 in the musical community of East Tennessee. During her time there, she soloed with several local orchestras including the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Maryville College Community Orchestra, Oak Ridge Youth Symphony, and Knoxville Youth Symphony Orchestra and had her performance dubbed “ethereal” by the Knoxville News Sentinel. After high school, Libby moved to Chicago to study with pedagogue Olga Kaler and complete her Bachelor’s degree in violin performance at DePaul University. She grew homesick for the sounds of the Smoky Mountains and began exploring various fiddling traditions while composing and performing with new acoustic trio Ask Your Folks. Since that stylistic shift, Libby has learned from many friends and teachers including Matt Brown, Rayna Gellert, and most recently, Grammy Award winner Dom Flemons during a summer of research and music making at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Libby is currently a member of the oldtime stringband Ginny’s Kitchen and a newly formed duo project with banjo-fiddler Jake Blount, Tui.
During her time developing as a fiddler, Libby has also continued her classical violin career. In 2018 she graduated from New York University with a Masters of Music, where she studied with Gregory Fulkerson and served on adjunct faculty teaching undergraduate non-music majors.
