Hi! Welcome to my TakeLessons page, where I provide information about my background and teaching services.

I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. My music students include children, working professionals, performing artists, and seniors. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. My training at Columbia University and with private instructors focused on classical repertoire and theory, but I also work with students on popular music (i.e.Pop, R&B, Electronica, and Folk). Music theory (i.e. sight reading, chord progressions) and practices from Linklater, Alexander, Williamson movement, and Art of Practicing techniques are incorporated into my music instruction.

What is my background?
I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. I have developed a keen ability to assess and shape talent from years of training, teaching, performing, and working with the head of Arts programs to conduct admissions interviews, student evaluations, and performances. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. My training at Columbia University and privately with notable musicians focused on classical repertoire and theory, but I also work with students on popular music (i.e. Pop, R&B, Electronica, and Folk).

What material is covered during lessons?
Music theory (i.e. sight reading, chord progressions) as well as posture,
artistic expression, interpretation, breathing, and finger and pitch placement techniques are incorporated into my music instruction. Cold reading, audition preparation and technique, Shakespeare, scene analysis, and business strategies are examples of topics that may be covered in acting instruction. Linklater (voice), Alexander, Williamson (movement), and Art of Practicing (piano) methods are also employed.

What are the profiles of my students?
My students come from different walks of life: children coming from school who bound excitedly to my lesson door; teenage artists who have the passion and vision but lack the technique; working adults who seek reprieve from the stress of work by singing/ learning an instrument that they've always wanted to play; and seniors who want a fun hobby to keep active. I enjoy teaching them and watching them master the fundamentals while developing their own performance style (or even composing their own music)!

What is my teaching style?
Based on feedback, students appreciate that I am a teacher with a warm personality whose supportive, passionate, and fun approach and effective techniques help them attain the following: 1) a firm understanding of the fundamentals of music theory or acting technique; 2) an ability to effectively learn how to perform and practice singing/playing/acting a piece; and 3) a style of performing that minimizes tension, produces beautiful sound or a dynamic character, and/or allows them to fully express themselves. After a few months, students should have sound knowledge of all three.

My students and I connect, in part, because I remember being like them. On stage, I started out dancing and acting; I delved into singing and songwriting and then fell in love with playing the piano. The day that I learned how to merge those passions (i.e. singing while playing the piano) was one of the happiest days of my life! Now, whether I'm performing Shakespeare on stage, playing Chopin and Beethoven, or singing while playing tunes by Whitney Houston, I still get excited. Hopefully, I fuel that excitement in you, too!

What is the lesson structure?
Due to the comprehensive nature of my teaching style and structure, students above the age of 6 take lessons for 60 minutes; 30-minute lessons are only available for children aged 5-6. If a student wants to learn how to play while singing, I am happy to help him/her do so!

My studio location in Manhattan is conveniently near Midtown, Chelsea, Flat Iron, Murray Hill, Union Square, Tribeca, and the Financial District in particular and is easily accessible via public transportation. It houses an upright piano and seating for parents.

Nikole, is very warm and professional. I have never continued with voice lessons, I enjoyed the experience so much that I'm going to kick the bad habit of smoking and sit down and seriously figure my finances out to continue being taught by her. With over 20 years teaching experience, Nick is patient with children & adults. He has a creative, unique pedagogy emphasizing hearing through singing, ear-training & natural, organic listening. Nick instills healthy absorption of music while students have fun learning their music, sight reading, internalizing with focus on rhythm and time.
As a student, you will get to work on music that you, the student select as well as work on sight-reading, technique, ear-training. We will also work out of method books and use other sources of information.

Chairs, music stands, instrument stands, classical foot pedals, classical guitar pillows, guitar amps, guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, drum set. Students usually provide their own instruments but it's possible to borrow an instrument during the lesson at the studio on the first lesson. (free street parking right in front!)

Nick's pedagogy emphasizes ear-training, singing, reading and truly hearing the music we are working on. Rather than rote teaching and guitar tablature, he instills natural listening, transcribing, sight-reading and proper technique. Lessons are always enjoyable as Nick observes each student's unique needs and listen's to their song preferences and musical goals. Students have the opportunity to learn pieces and genres they select and they are trained to figure out tunes by ear (ear-training) and transcribe.

About Carolyn
Coming from a large extended family in Hawaii, I was surrounded by luau music, kachi-kachi dancing, Japanese bon dances, handsome local guys singing and playing their guitars and my aunties strumming their ukes and singing old songs. I reveled in walking alone in Nature or playing piano and singing in empty, stain-glassed churches – just wailing in the dark and colored light!

I studied: classical piano, organ, oboe, clarinet, violin, voice, and guitar. I sang in jazz trios and pop bands, earned income as a church organist/choir accompanist, and spent 15 years teaching private piano lessons to students of all ages.
I studied drawing and painting, I drew trees, animals, the ocean, sky and mountains, still life, and the people around me.

Upon arriving in New York City, I entered into a journey of playing at a Washington Heights gos
pel church, living in a building filled with musicians, accompanying vocal master classes, studying Sanskrit, Indian raga, world percussion, creative arts therapy and performance wellness.

I now compose and sing my songs - interweaving voice with keyboard or guitar. Besides teaching privately, I can be found performing my songs in clubs, outdoor festivals, coffee houses, and poetry/healing events. I currently attended a certificate program in sound & music healing and the focus of my music rests here. I incorporate many techniques to aid students in relaxation, breath awareness, and de-stressing.

Using traditional teaching methods, I create meaningful experiences for students by:

About Juan
New York city composer and guitarist Juan Calderon is a native of Ecuador raised in Colombia. He immigrated to Miami at age 20 to escape the political climate of the late 90’s, and resides in Manhattan since 2008.

Juan’s music blends elements from his unique life experiences, having been raised as an only child by a single mother in a bohemian environment. He was a recording and touring rock guitarist in Colombia, and he has studied East Asian music extensively, inspired by interaction with musicians and artists in China, Japan, and Indonesia.

His latest accomplishments include a performance of his composition “Reino Incierto” at Carnegie Hall (2015) and Sounds of the City, as well as a performance of his guitar quartet composition “Rising” by the UK guitar quartet.

Juan Calderon currently studies classical guitar with Mark D
elPriora, chair of the Guitar Department at the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a master degree in composition. His mentors include composers Susan Botti, Reiko Fueting, and electronic music pioneer Joel Chadabe. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Florida, where he studied jazz guitar with Tom Lippincott, and composition with Susan Epstein-Garcia.

Juan is also an avid cartoonist, collector of rare books and little cars, food adventurer and runner.

*** Lesson Details ***
Guitar teaching encompasses many disciplines. One has to be a bit of a psychologist in order to gauge a potential student needs and musical sensibilities. The mathematical aspect of musical notation and rhythm makes us part mathematicians. In the end, there is also a self-actualizing aspect to guitar teaching in the sense that we are always witness to those moments that made us decide a career on music.
During my years of guitar teaching I have encountered many types of students, and I have learned from them as much as they have learned from me as they make me question aspects of music that I would have never thought about. I have learned to not take for granted the definition of concepts such as rhythm and harmony, and to look at guitar technique from different perspectives as I find ways to accommodate to a student’s capabilities. Ultimately, it is also a job that requires a lot of planning and structure. My first step, generally, is to assess the student’s ability and interest to find material suitable for them. Then, I proceed to familiarize with the student’s musical tastes and sensibilities to assign practice material accordingly. For example, if the student is interested in rock or pop music, we will work on a particular song that fits his level and also solves a particular technical problem. During that process I will answer any of the student’s questions, and provide insight into musical terminology. We will also work on basic concepts of rhythm, melody, and harmony. My training as a composer and jazz guitarists also enables me to tap into the student’s creative side. In that case, we would start with a basic blues progression and blues scales, and work on the basics of improvisation or songwriting.

With a patient and intuitive approach, Juan tailors each lesson to fit not only the student’s skill level, but also desire for depth of understanding. When I first began taking lessons, I was only able to plunk a few chords and play along with a few basic songs. However, over the course of a year and a half with Juan, I gained a foundational knowledge of the classical guitar, as well as the confidence to site read and play a range of other styles of guitar music. He seamlessly integrated music theory concepts into song studies, helping me learn major/minor scales and chord shapes, and then apply this knowledge to better understand song structures and composition. It has been such a great experience learning from Juan, especially because he is both an exemplary teacher and guitar player!

I started playing guitar at age 11, taking lessons at the local music studio in Hackensack, NJ. I became heavily influenced by The Beatles after hearing their music and as a teenager played in local rock groups, having some success being in the bands Jona's Ark and The Yorkshire Pudding, opening for artists Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, John Mayall and backing up Gary U.S. Bonds. I started playing piano at 19 when I took a group piano class in college. I attended Berklee College of Music and studied guitar with Bill Leavitt and Pat Metheny. That's where I started learning about all the great jazz artists from Duke Ellington to Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Wes Montgomery to name a few. While at Berklee I also developed a love of the classical guitar and it's repertoire. After Berklee, I became a freelance musician and played guitar for
The Drifters, Del Shannon, The Shirelles, The Marvelettes, The Crystals, Chuck Berry, Leslie Gore and believe it or not Tiny Tim. I played guitar, harmonica, mandolin and banjo in productions of: Hair, Tommy, Big River, Fiddler On The Roof and Grease. I composed my own music and performed and co-wrote with others who also wrote their own music. I have always taught private guitar lessons as far back as I can remember. One notable student was Stevie Wonder's son Keita who I taught for 2 years at Stevie's home in northern New Jersey as well as CBS News Anchor Charles Osgood's daughter Annie. Currently I teach 20 private guitar students a week.. From 1994 to 2000, I was the guitarist for The Royal Scam (a Steely Dan Tribute) and during that period I was hired by Hal Leonard Music Corp. to write a guitar transcription book called "The Best of Steely Dan". I was also hired by Brother International Corp. to compose and record a national radio jingle called "P-Touch", with Corey Glover from the rock band Living Colour doing the vocal tracks.
In 1996 I went to William Paterson University to obtain my teacher certification in music education. After the 9/11 attacks, I co-wrote and arranged "America Home Of The Free". The song was used to raise thousands of dollars for the victims of The World Trade Center attacks. Presently I divide my time between teaching, which I enjoy as much as performing and playing guitar with a jazz quartet called ....and All That Jazz, whose 2005 CD "Reflections" was recorded, mixed and mastered in my home based 24 track recording studio in northern NJ. I am also involved in a mandolin / classical guitar project called Music Of The Ages and perform with a 10 piece band called Epic Soul.
As a teacher I am very patient with students and enjoy helping them reach their own musical goals. I emphasize knowing the basics and encourage students to study music theory and basic reading of standard notation. I always ask my students to bring in songs they want to learn as a way to motivate them to practice more.

*** Lesson Details ***
GUITAR: I expect my students to practice at least 5 days a week for at least a 1/2 hour per day. I use the Suzuki method for young students ages 8 to10. We continue learning basic folk songs by ear and then start reading standard notation and basic theory within 6 to 8 months along with classical guitar duets. For older students I use the Hal Leonard guitar method. After 3 months of lessons students can expect to know the basic open position chords and strum patterns to some basic songs as well as some famous guitar riffs and also be able to read some basic melodies in standard notation. After 6 months students will be able to play a 12 bar blues and improvise with the pentatonic and blues scales as well as learn moveable scales and chords and apply these to songs.

PIANO: I also start young piano students with the Suzuki method so they can play some five finger familiar melodies in a short time period. Then we progress to reading notation and eventually adding chord accompaniment to melodies. I use the Faber piano method for reading standard notation.

24 track recording studio, room for parents to sit 14' x 21'...completely furnished studio with guitars, amps, piano, drum machine, synthesizer, microphones...the works.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need a good quality and proper size guitar (for very young students) a music stand (for their home use) a foot stool, a metronome and books I assign along with an 8 1/2" X 11" blank manuscript book and a folder with side pockets to hold handout sheets. Piano students need their own instrument and the above materials minus the foot stool.

Music and studying music has always been a passionate experience for me. I have been so blessed with the teachers and fellow musicians in my life. I have performed in great jazz clubs in New York, on Broadway, and performing arts centers across the country. I'm currently playing in many great performing ensembles. I have put out two CD's as a leader and played on multiple CD's for other artists.

*** Lesson Details ***

My most important goal for each student is that they get to where they want to be musically.

I want the student to be able to play the way he or she wants to play. If you want to learn to play one song, that is great! If you want to learn to play one classical etude that is just as great! If you want to learn how to play in a salsa band, bravo! I treat the desires of my students as my curriculum. Each student will receive special prep time from me each week. I pride myself in taking the time and energy to prepare for each meeting. Every time you complete a lesson, it is my hope that you are walking away as a better musician.

In the beginning I hope to find what will musically interests you the most. Usually, you might have a goal that requires you to play on a higher level than you do presently. If that is true, we might take some time to figure out a road map to get you to that place. Along the way, I'm sure you and I will learn many new concepts and techniques that aid you in becoming the bassist/musician you want to be.

And rest assured, the teacher always learns from the student...this is the best part of teaching: learning from the student.

I have been lucky to play tons of different types of music. I believe I can give musicians and aspiring musicians a deep understanding of what is most important in many different styles of music. Music I have been lucky enough to study and play professionally: Jazz, Rock, Funk, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Blues, Classical, Pop.
I'm also a very good transcriber, so if there is a song you heard on the radio we can definitely play it! Ear training could be an area in which I could be of service to you as well.
I have many arranging and composing credits and I would be glad to help students in this area whenever requested.

Love my lessons

John is an amazing teacher all around. Very professional and good at getting me to understand things which may be a bit confusing. I am currently reading and playing between four books and I never thought it would be possible especially just after taking lessons for a year. Sometimes I feel a bit frustraited when I am not able to play certain pieces or when I dont understand a concept but John is great at breaking everything down and making it easier. I am now realizing how my piano skills can be utilizied in my other music projects. When I attend my lessons I am reminded why I love having them so much. With him as my instructor I can see my skills improving and I know I will only get better. I recommend piano lessons to everyone and if you are looking to have a great teacher John is your go to person !

Jeonghun Arron K. is a composer, arranger and singer.

He started his career in music by performing in many local bands and also working for game companies and movie OST in South Korea, after he got a degree in Music Composition and Education from Baekseok Arts University in Seoul in 2005. He found ‘Let Us Music Inc.’ and had worked as a studio engineer and a co-producer from 2003 to 2008.

He is a scholarship winner of Nyack College School of Music in NYC, where he studied music composition and singing. He performed as a choir member in many classical concerts; New York Philharmonic: PHILHARMONIC 360 at Park Avenue Armory, Requiem (Bradley Ellingboe) at Carnegie Hall and Nyack College Concert at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center.

His band 'Almost an Orchestra', released an EP album in 2012. The band arranged performed music for Oc
cupy Olympus, performed by Magis Theatre Company at Flamboyan Theatre, New York International Fringe Festival in 2013.

Amazing instructor! I have taken Korean classes before but it was a struggle. The first day of my tutoring, he explained the basics in such an easy and uncomplicated way. I learned more from that first lesson than I ever had before! Arron also does an excellent job of tailoring the lessons for me. He reviews what I do know quickly and spends more time on the things I don't understand or am struggling to understand. Again he explains what I don't understand is such a simple way and even more comforting he doesn't get frustrated or make me feel dumb when I do struggle. Highly recommended!

Classes with Arron have been really helpful. I think if you have classes with him, you're getting a great value. It seems very important to him that I understand what he's been teaching and that we complete the planned amount of work for each lesson.
Not only that, but he has even been kind enough to extend his teaching beyond the virtual classroom by answering questions that I've had between classes through messages. It is so helpful to have someone who knows what he's talking about to answer the tough questions that are too hard to find the answers to with Google.

Paolo Colagrossi was born in Campobasso on May 23, 1989. At the beginning of his musical path he performed in several Music Festivals in Italy with the band La Stella Rossa del Kinotto (Bonefro Rock, Vinchiaturo Music Festival, Rockstock, Italia Wave).
In 2007 - 2008
is joining the Young Jazz Puzzle for Europe, a project that
brings together young talents from all over the world to
perform alongside musicians such as Pierre Vaiana (Django
d'or 2009) and Tuur Floorizone.
In 2009 - 2010
he moved to Rome where he pursued a scholarship to attend
the diploma course at St. Louis College of
Music. He is then
admitted to the Conservatory L. Refice of Frosinone where
he graduated in jazz guitar with the highest marks. During
these years he is a guitar teacher at the Suaviter music
school in Rome and collaborates with local musicians.
In 2011
he obtains an Erasmus scholarship to continue his studies at
Lemmens Institute in Leuven (BE). During this period he
performed with his quartet in different local clubs including
the Music Village in Brussels.
In 2012
he is admitted to attend the Master's program in Jazz Guitar
at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where he studies with J.
Van Ruller, M. Van Der Grinten and M. Van Ijterson.
In 2013
he collaborates with composer Johanna Groot Bluemink to
perform pieces for solo guitar and orchestra at the
Composers' Festival in Amsterdam.
In 2014
he joins the CVA Big Band directed by artists such as John
Clayton (Doublebassist of Count Basie's Orchestra) and
Justin Di Cioccio (Director of the Jazz Department at the
Manhattan School Of Music).
In 2015 - 2016
he performs at the Amsterdamse Theater School the music
for the opera "Eer Was Eens" by composer Luca Petracca.
During these years he also has the opportunity to deepen
the language of jazz and improvisation by taking private
lessons from Lee Konitz, Peter Bernstein and Lage Lund. He
performs with his band, the Paolo Colagrossi Quintet, and
records his first album as bandleader, "Melodie Dal
Mezzogiorno". ".... The album has a strong artistic unit and a
good balance between strength and stillness. ... 'Melodies
From the Mezzogiorno' is a successful project. "Jazzflits.
In 2017
he is a guitar assistant at Fara in Sabina's Jazz Clinics and
move to NYC with an O1-B visa (for individuals with
extraordinary ability in the arts).
