I have been teaching music theory part time since 1972 and full time since 1998. One of the most important aspects of learning music theory is going beyond "what to play" and teaching you "why you're playing it". Once you have a grasp of basic theory concepts, you'll be able to learn new songs twice as fast, and with a great deal more accuracy!

Jesse began studying guitar at the age of ten, and in his studies has developed an unwitting passion for playing and teaching. Bay Area native Jesse has studied with classical guitarist Angel Miguel Lejarza Leo, flamenco guitar virtuoso Jason McGuire, and has worked under the mindful instruction of classical guitarist Nicholas Goluses at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, New York. There Jesse completed his Bachelors in Music (Classical Performance) with distinction, and was honored with a Performer’s Certificate, demonstrating excellence in guitar performance. During his undergraduate studies, Jesse performed in masterclasses led by the prestigious GFA winner, Tengyue Zhang, and Bach expert, Paul Galbraith. His time at Eastman has given him a strong background in music theory; he is an advocate for the written and aural analysis of music, and stresses the importance of composition and instrumental exploration. As a performer and teacher, Jesse specializes in ...

About Jesse

I love music and have been composing and performing for many years. And although I love to compose and perform, teaching is probably my favorite aspect of working in music. I get the most joy in teaching when an individual learns something new, or when things start to "click" so to speak. Further, I

Jesse is an excellent teacher. He is calm, warm and incredibly patient with my 6 year old daughter. After having a thoughtful discussion about how we should start lessons, we agreed on an approach that would further encourage her natural enthusiasm for music. She loves it. Jesse has also been very flexible with offering zoom and in person classes. I have been really impressed with how well he holds my daughter’s attention even over zoom. He is a wonderful teacher and I could not recommend him more.

Jesse masters the art of making teaching be FUN! He is an incredible musician, but knows how to connect with kids to open up their world to love and learn music. My 6 year old son and 7 year old daughter both do ukulele lessons with Jesse, and it’s a highlight of their week. As a parent, I’m excited to have them learning an instrument, and at the same time, I see it building their confidence too. Being brave to practice singing and playing the instrument, despite feeling nervous about it. Jesse has a beautiful way of connecting to the kids with humor and encouragement, so they feel both comfortable and confident. I’m so happy we started music lessons with Jesse, and honestly cannot recommend him enough!!

Jesse structures lessons for the skill of the student and the direction the student wants to go in. Emphasizing the students abilities. He is knowledgeable in all aspects of music. Jesse explains concepts well and also ensures the student understands what is being thought. Great guitarist and great teacher.

I love to teach music theory at all levels. Music Theory helps you understand many aspects of music, including why certain notes and chords sound good together, finding the right key to sing a song that is in your voice range, improvisation and soloing on your instrument, timing, rhythm, creating original melodies, thinking outside the box for composition, and many others.

About Mark

I have played on tour with several professional bands, playing rock, pop, blues, African, metal, and country. Now I am a bandleader and perform live in various bands and record original music as often as possible. My music has gotten airplay in many countries. I started taking guitar lessons a

DeAnna has excellent credentials as a pianist and music theorist, but more importantly for me she is a patient teacher and good communicator who works hard to ensure that I learn and understand even the most basic skills and techniques. She is also fun to talk to and be with, and her love of music is infectious. She is an excellent teacher for an older student, and I imagine for younger ones too.

But as far as I know you gave a great class on the basics of theory, which was wonderful. Thank you so much for your excellent class. Please let me know if I need to do anything more to change it to singing lessons.
Thank you!!

"I had the pleasure and honor of being one of his students in Mexico City while I was in music college. He's a very disciplined teacher (never missed a class) and he has complete dominion over the subjects he teaches. Roberto's not only an amazing guitarist but he has a unique way of teaching music theory and history that makes you quite familiar with the different approaches to music over the different ages. He also shows a legitimate interest over his students, he challenges then and even owns when he's pointed out mistakes by them. During my time as his student I also realized that he was quite respected by the other professors. Fair warning: he can be a little sarcastic but he means no offense whatsoever to his students and fellow musicians."

Music Student Face-Off: Memorizers vs. Readers | Which is Better?

As you learn songs and work through your music books, do you memorize the notes? Or do you read along every time you play? In this post, music teacher Vanessa G. discusses the pros and cons to the approaches...   Imagine your teacher gives you a piece of music to study. What's your process? Do you listen to a recording, memorizing the melody and the stylistic aspects before you begin, and then as you play? Or would you sit down and sight read the notes, and perfect it from that star …

Why You Should Learn (At Least a Little) Music Theory

One of the most common weaknesses for amateur musicians is a lack of music theory knowledge. Many people assume that learning theory is difficult (it isn’t) that it has no practical purpose (it does), or even that it will actively make them worse at making music (quite the opposite). I’m here to convince you that learning a little about how music works is one of the most important skills you can develop and should absolutely be part of your daily practice routine. Here are five reasons w …
