While music theory is very challenging to learn, it is one of the most valuable tools to have in playing music. the theory i teach from guitar DIRECTLY transfers over to any instrument. And while some teachers just expect music theory to be taught and learned easily, i take a different approach. Starting with the basics of music theory, the musical alphabet, moving to simple staff and tabs, the things i teach all immediately follow into each other one after another. Simple sayings and funny acronyms I've found help students with things like the name of guitar strings and how to follow the sharps and flats of the musical alphabet. I take a hands on approach to theory instructed in a way that is easy to follow and fun to learn!

Analyzing a piece of music is almost like solving a puzzle. The only difference is, this puzzle often has multiple solutions. This is what makes music theory a special subject because for many composers who created pieces before modern day music theory, we are merely guessing their intentions but have no definitive answer. The only way to master this puzzle-solving process is repetition, repetition, and more repetition. Teaching students how to first dinstinguish the pieces of the puzzle from one another, then learn to break them down, takes time and patience. The most important task for the tutor is to let the student work through the puzzle with minimal interjections so they can understand how each piece fits together and enjoy the mystery of theory and analysis.

Music theory can be studied as a separate lesson or it can be incorporated into a performance area. As a music teacher of 47 years, I have primarily taught music theory as an integral part of my music lessons. I believe that learning music theory works best when using the piano keyboard.
