Strum and sing your favorite songs! Rhythm, fingerpicking, singing and playing, soloing, chord melodies and more. The foundation of music lessons is developing good listening and good timing. These are skills that all the best musicians have. That, along with some study of ukulele basics will provide a foundation for us to approach the kind of music that inspired you to look up a uk teacher. My hope is that you will become a well rounded musician and uk player, and that we'll both discover new music :)

Something about the freedom in the framework of four strings seems to make the Ukulele limitless to me. The Uke and its history has always fascinated me, and because I have Hawaiian and Portuguese relatives I almost feel it my obligation to play ukulele. I've been playing Tenor, Soprano, and Baritone ukuleles for 10 years and with it, have written jingles for NBC, recorded three albums of world music inspired compositions, and have recorded and played with artists like Phoebe Bridgers, Cody Simpson, and Annika Bennett at the Kennedy Center and other venues around the world. I would love to teach you all chords and voicings up and down the neck, chord/melody parts (so you can provide both the harmony and melody simultaneously) and teach you all your favorite songs with simple and emotional finger picking and strumming patterns that'll never go out of style. Let's fill in all the gaps together and work on your ear training so you'll be able to hear any song and immediately be able to ...

Joel is an accomplished performer, composer, songwriter, and educator who draws from several pedagogical techniques to create a curriculum that is fun, active, inquiry-based, and student-driven. He is a professionally licensed K-12 music teacher in the state of Colorado with a master's degree in music education who has taught in public schools and privately for 5 years. Work collaboratively to set goals, pick repertoire, and build a strong musical foundation. Come prepared to sing, improvise, analyze, and play.

Beginner

Intermediate
Learn about common variations of the tonalities you already know and start to venture into more complex rhythm ideas like polyrhythms. Also start to build the chops to learn parts more accurately when learning songs.

Advanced
Expand into more complex polyrhythms as well as asymmetrical meters. Also expand harmony and melody to include modes and chromaticism. Push your skills through original creations or original arrangements of existing material.
