I strive to create an environment in which students are inspired to discover, create, learn, express themselves and have fun. I focus on strengthening students' foundational techniques, through scales, etudes and other materials and then applying those skills in pieces and songs that are designed to build a good basis of musical knowledge, helping students to become confident in their musical abilities.

Brittany is very well prepared for our lessons. She's very encouraging and although I've only had two lessons, I've learned a lot and she gives me plenty of exercises to do on my own to improve as well.

1. Working in a smart way so you would reach the best from your potential in a comfortable way.
2. Understanding that each person is unique and in that matters, the way of learning, of relating with the teacher and approaching to the violin playing.
3. Having fun while practicing and during the lesson.

Lessons are fun. My philosophy is that students should have music in their lives and benefit from the lessons they take now for years to come. Learning to play a musical instrument will help students with math skills, study habits, and develop a skill that will last for a lifetime.

After 3 months students will understand the fundamentals of their string instrument, know how to care for their instrument, warm up properly, be able to read and play introductory passages. After 6 months the student will have learned basic music theory, how to read music, and have advanced through playing multiple songs.

About Betsy

Music is the biggest passion in my life. I love being able to share that gift with my students, and look forward to their progress as much as my own. I continue to grow and develop as a musician, and love connecting with people through music. My students all learn to love and appreciate music, t

No two students are ever alike. I've learned that using only one method may not benefit all students. Therefore, I use a variety of methods, some of which include Hanon, the Bastien Series, Suzuki technique for Piano and Violin, and countless others depending on what the student wishes to achieve. I have found that my most successful (and satisfied) students are the ones that express to me their specific musical goals, and then I am able to find a combination of methods to help them practice, rehearse, and refine their style of interest.

Lesson Style
Lessons are uniquely tailored to the students' goals, be it to become functional with an instrument or to dominate at an audition. We will go through warm-ups that will place emphasis on technique, explore various methods so that the student may decide which one gets them the best result, and then work through the repertoire not only for proficiency, but also for interpretation, precise yet passionate phrasing, and of course, to ...

"My son, Donovan, studied violin with Ms. Nelson for four years at Alan’s Music in La Mesa, CA. He began at age four and I was a bit apprehensive about finding a teacher who would be effective with a younger child. Ms. Nelson was the perfect fit. She selects music that is varied and interesting. She is flexible too. When my son showed an interest in learning Superman, she found the music and supported him. We love her patient, gentle, but firm approach. Ms. Nelson has high expectations and is very open-minded about what young students can learn. From the start, she incorporated teaching music notation & music theory at age-appropriate levels. She is extremely knowledgeable and shares her knowledge with students in an engaging and comprehensible manner. She instills a love of music in her students - what a gift! I can’t recommend Ms. Nelson’s music instruction enough.

-Gina Vattuone La Mesa, CA

Ms. Nelson is a very nice and funny person. She is a good violin teacher because she is encouraging and always plays the music before I play it to see if I like it.

- Donovan Maes, age 8, La Mesa, CA"

"Thanks to Jacqueline, I have been able to pick up the violin again (after not playing for many years) and build back my technique reasonably quickly. She has an expansive library of musical exercises and songs that are perfect for making your practicing more efficient and your playing sound better. Over the last two years I’ve started to see her as less of a violin teacher and more of a violin guru. I high recommend her to any new/old violin student."
