My teaching career began while I was a Conservatory graduate student. Teaching and performing are complementary aspects of being a musician. Instructing others provides a deeper, more thorough understanding of my own approach to playing. Several decades of performing in professional orchestras and chamber music ensembles grants a life time of practical experience to share with my students.
While the serious pursuit of a professional level of accomplishment on two diverse instruments such as the violin and the flute is unusual, the idiomatic characteristics of each one have given me unique insights into other. Over the years I have discovered concepts that have enhanced my performing and teaching of both. These ideas have allowed me to present an integrated approach and perspective for both instruments that not many other teachers would have.
My pedagogical philosophy provides the aspiring student with a greater understanding of the other instruments with whom they will ...

Jami was an amazing teacher! She was personable, encouraging and alleviated all my fears and concerns. She understood my busy schedule and was very accommodating. The lessons were more relaxed than I had initially anticipated. It did not take long before I began feeling comfortable handling the violin and bow. Through Jami, I also learned a great deal about the history and construction of the violin, music for the violin and music theory.
Jami taught a mix of Suzuki, scales and multiple technique and method books; all complementing each other on my path to progressing as a violinist. As an adult, it was nice to gradually incorporate more tunes a mature adult would appreciate playing while continuing to build on the basics. After the first few months, I particularly enjoyed learning how to play violin duets with Jami or having Jami accompany me on the piano. I always left my lessons with a feeling of accomplishment.
I only ceased lessons due to Jami relocating, but I am looking forward to online lessons once I am more technologically capable of doing so. You will not be disappointed if choosing Jami as a teacher!

Over the past 12 years, we've given over 3,000,000 lessons to happy customers around the world.

Diane is a great Teacher.
We are very pleased that she is teaching our young daughter (12) to play the Violin. At the beginning we were a little bit nervous since this was the first time for my daughter to be in contact with music and it turned out to be great.
Diane has been very supportive, always finding better ways to reinforce the lessons and making sure her students understand every practice objective. She is patience, very flexible and she always emphasizes the importance of having fun while one learns to play an instrument. She works hard to prepare and keep a good record of every single lesson.
We are excited, but most important, our daughter is enjoying learning to play the violin. Thanks Diane!"

Our eleven-year-old child "J" has been taking violin lessons from Maureen for one year. J expected to pick up the violin and play right off the bat, but the most fundamental part of the process is learning to read the music. This was somewhat frustrating and disappointing to J at the time, but Maureen encouraged and reinforced the basics so that a solid foundation is established. She encourages regular practice time rather than demanding it, communicating to J that the reward to consistent practice is improvement. J feels great about the accomplishment. Self-discipline has been instilled through this process. We enjoy hearing the progression of skill level at practice time over the past year. The sound is lovely. J is allowed to choose music that J is interested in. While Maureen is pleasant and responds immediately to any scheduling communication with us - the parents - she is first and foremost J's teacher and communicates all homework to J (not us). J is becoming more independent and responsible through this journey, enjoying the instrument and appreciating the skill of accomplished musicians. Maureen has also helped J with vocal exercises for school performances, so she is a versatile instructor. J looks forward to going to the lessons with Maureen and is sad when there is an off week."

Popular Violin Articles from our Blog
The violin is often considered by musicians to be one of the most challenging instruments to learn. Its roots trace back many centuries and it was clearly a definitive instrument in shaping classical music all over the world. One of the reasons it is considered a difficult instrument to learn is that it's a fretless string instrument, making violin music notes appear to be inexact, yet fingering must still be done with precision. The reward for learning this sweet-sounding elegant instrument, ho …
