As a student of mine you can expect to improve your playing skills week to week. I can teach from the very first lesson on. Students will learn techniques to improve their playing and will play fun music. If you are interested in learning improvisation, I can help with that, too. I enjoy teaching violin, viola and cello.
I am most passionate about teaching students to become independent, critical thinking musicians who will be able to rely on their own knowledge to learn new music as they go along. I stress music reading, ear training, and strong fundamentals in playing. I am very encouraging, love spreading my love of music.

About Melissa

I began playing violin in elementary school, and immediately knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My first words as a baby were lyrics because I sang before I spoke. I played violin until 11th grade when I fell in love with the sound of the viola. I studied music performance

I teach from the earliest beginner through adult. My violin students are currently performing for different schools and ensembles. When students are performing with orchestras, much time is spent working on that music as well as their regular music.

My teaching philosophy is that music is for ALL ages and ALL abilities. I love teaching foremost because of the connection between student and teacher; I have been really blessed to have some wonderful mentors throughout my life, and I value being able to mentor others. I am here as a teacher to see you for your unique set of strengths, interests, and goals.

My first lesson was very good. She took the time to explain and we progressed at a good pace. She explained things and showed me proper techniques to hold the violin and the bow. Overall the lesson was fun and exciting.

I started working with Alyssa in person when she was teaching violin in Salt Lake City. Once she moved to Los Angeles I agreed to try the online lessons. I have found this method of learning to be very valuable. Alyssa has a unique way of teaching. While the traditional principles of violin playing are taught Alyssa includes mindfulness and breath in her methods. She also introduces improvisation and takes music beyond its notes on the page.
Maggie
Alyssa was very thorough and met my objectives.

I like making music fun. With the knowledge that playing an instrument is very difficult, my approach to teaching is to make each task seem as easy as possible. I promote the art of listening to music just as much as playing the notes on the page. I incorporate all the important aspects of violin playing: posture, sight-reading, technique, scales, and musicality to turn all my students into the best musicians they can be!

About Annarita

My name is Annarita and I am a violinist from Des Plaines, Illinois. I began playing at the age of seven, and by the time I was in high school I realized I wanted to make playing and teaching violin my career. In 2013, I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in music from Loyola University Chicag

"Tigran is a skillful, kind, patient and honest teacher. I’m a beginning adult learner and have been progressing very quickly with his help. Tigran’s teaching is structured and organized while keeping the lessons challenging and interesting enough to want to keep going. I value his time and knowledge. I also intend to continue learning the violin from Tigran for the long term. HIGHLY recommend!"

"Julie? Yes.

I wanted to start taking the violin seriously, and Julie was certainly the best teacher for that (and still is!). She helped me prepare for my audition for my school's chamber group and although I did not make it that year (being that I had started lessons a couple months before my audition day), I did the next year. Not only that, I made it by a long shot. I was fifth chair, first violin. Even before then I noticed how much I had improved studying with Julie. She not only worked with me on how to efficiently practice and approach the music itself, but taught me proper technique to yield the best sound--for instance, using the ENTIRE bow, an important thing to do... She is patient, her instruction is invaluable, and improvement is guaranteed (given that you also work hard). It is also superfun playing duets with her <3."

"To follow up, Jonathan is not only a very talented musician; but also takes his time with my daughter to help her understand, comprehend, and improve. The evening after our first lesson with Jonathan, she asked if she could play more (more often and longer) in lieu of chores - WOW! Never thought I'd hear that from my daughter; but Jonathan made the session enjoyable and encouraging to her. THANK YOU!!"

"It’s been a long time since i first met Dr. Chin Kim, however, I clearly remember how his lesson was so scientifically approached and technically making sense in every details. Since then, I kept playing for him and got much ideas and much help from him which I still do time to time.
Although enough of his degrees, he constantly studies the music (I also have seen him taking a music theory class) and he is very diligent in self-enrichment.
Dr. Kim is very friendly to his students and he could be a good adviser not only in playing the violin but in elsewise, too.
I hope lots of musicians get a chance to meet him and play for him. I guarantee it’s worth much"

Violin Tips: Developing Your Bow Hand

Before you can get to the double-stops and harmonics, you'll need to learn how to develop your bow hand. Without this foundation, other techniques may be compromised. Read on for a tutorial and bowing exercise from Portland, OR violin teacher Greg A... It can be mesmerizing to watch the fingers of a fiddler run up and down and across the strings, fast as lightning. But the motor that’s doing the bulk of the work and producing the beautiful tone is actually in the bow hand.  Before picking …
