I am currently a violin instructor and chamber music/ ensemble coach at University of Southern California. My previous teaching experiences include violin private lesson instruction and chamber music/ensemble coach at Yale University and New England Conservatory Preparatory School. I have been a teaching artist at Porterville Summer Strings for two summer seasons, giving individual instructions and coaching violin sectionals.
I am a graduate of Yale School of Music and New England Conservatory. My teaching focus primarily on good foundation of technique and relaxed posture/physical set up, while inspiring musicality and developing personal expression. I am familiar with a vast variety of classical repertoire/etudes/ scale systems and exercises; however, I often compose/ transcribe personalized etudes and musical pieces according to each student’s need and interest. I also work with music in different genres. I emphasize on the importance of good practice. I help my students to ...

I started learning violin from Dr. Dimitry 1 month ago because, unlike other teachers, I found Dr. Dimitry very honest in specifying the subtleties and nuances, especially the snaggy ones which make the violin one of the most challenging instruments to learn. Although his classes were very expensive, I chose him as he was a straightforward and experienced violinist and I never compromise on the quality of teaching. Also, being a doctoral student myself, I know what it means to earn a Ph.D. and that too in music.

Now, it has been one month, and I enjoy his classes. His analogies and examples are an apt way of understanding the techniques of playing the violin. Though Dr. Dimitry is an advanced violinist, he is very patient with absolute beginners. To sum up, I would highly recommend him to people who are very serious and determined to learn and practice the violin.

A true professional and a great teacher! I have been taking violin lessons now for 6 months with Dr. Dimitri Olevsky, having switched to Dimitri after having had a mediocre experience with my previous teacher. Wow…what a difference. Dimitri ably blends his extensive knowledge, talent, and seriousness about his craft with a witty sense of humor. He is able to simplify the complexities of violin technique so that it is truly feels accessible. Highly recommended.
Alexander
Dr. Olevsky was immediately able to improve my playing with direct, practical advice. He is concerned with efficient practice and in making the maximum amount of progress in the time that one has. He is highly knowledgable about the audition process and the real day to day of being a professional performing violinist. I have been playing for 15+ years and find Dimitry's lessons very challenging and stimulating.

As an instrumentalist and composer, I have the privilege of an active and successful career in Music, performing across the country with world-class artists, as well as writing music for some of the most sought after international performers.

I believe Music is, most importantly, a tool for communication. As a teacher, I strive to show students how to use this tool on their path towards clearer, more confident self-expression, and in so doing, further myself along the same path.

Kristapor is a wonderful teacher. He not only taught my son violin, but also inspired him to be a better violinist. He spent hours with my son to come up with a high standard audition tape for applying a summer music camp. My son got accepted & had a great time learning music at the camp. Thank you, Kristapor!!!!

I took violin lessons from Kris for nearly two years, until moving out of LA. He is an extremely talented musician and teacher. During these lessons, my violin technique and musical expression both considerably improved. Kris is very patient, and able to teach multiple methods to successfully master various violin techniques (such as vibrato). Through implementing improvisation into the lessons, Kris can also bring out the student's musical creativity and confidence, which not only helps aspiring composers, but guides violin students in adding expression to the music they're currently learning. He encourages students to challenge themselves, but effectively teaches all of the techniques necessary to accomplish their musical goals.

He is also a brilliant composer, and is an excellent composition teacher as well! Although my lessons were mostly focused on violin, he provided much useful advice for improving my compositions for orchestra and symphonic band as well.

I highly recommend Kris as an instructor for music students of any proficiency level!

"My 12 year old grandson has been playing violin since he was 5. He started playing with Nikita in August 2017. Nikita is correcting all the bad habits that have crept into RJ's playing. I can see a huge difference in his confidence as well as the quality of his playing. Nikita has been extremely patient with him and has been very flexible with his lesson times due to sports schedules. Thank you Nikita!"

"Susanna is a great teacher.

I have never played a violin before, and she is walking me through the process with patience, clear instructions, different interesting and fun ways of explaining concepts, which make lessons flow easily. By the time the lesson ends, I can hardly notice that an hour has passed by.

It is a joy to have her as a teacher. I have had a few questions off schedule, and she has never failed to answer them promptly.
I look forward to every lesson I have with her to keep learning to play this beautiful and amazing instrument."

"I have been a student of Michael’s for approximately 7 months. My only previous experience with violin had been one year in elementary school band class and 8 months with a private teacher. When my private teacher’s lesson schedule changed, I was introduced to Michael and was greatly impressed by his skill level and teaching style. I have learned so much more than I had expected in each lesson, like how to self-tune, use a metronome, shift, and various other techniques. Michael constantly offers feedback on how I can execute techniques better, and I feel that this helps me to learn more effectively. He is always challenging me by giving me harder pieces and scales. I have even been told by my high school orchestra conductor that I have improved so much and she is constantly surprised by how fast I am learning. I highly recommend having Michael as a teacher for anyone looking to learn how to play the violin."

However he instantly connected with Landon and said he has a fantastic time. I absolutely love how Landon has a gift to communicate music without watering down terminology but slowly speaking so that children can understand. He truly has a gift. We look forward to the next one."

"Family Music Teacher

We have enjoyed having Maureen as our family’s music teacher. My son started taking flute lessons with Maureen in 2009 and advanced through the levels very quickly. He plays flute in YOSAC (Youth Orchestra of Southern Alameda County). He also plays saxophone and tried out and was selected for the Alameda County Honor Band. Maureen worked with him on jazz theory and improvisation and he plays in the jazz band at school. With Maureen, he worked through all six levels of Master Theory and is ready for the college level AP Music Theory at 14 years old. He also completed the MTAC (Music Teachers’ Association of California) Composer’s Today workbooks and used http://www.noteflight.com to write his own music and participate in composition contests. My daughter has been taking piano and violin lessons with Maureen and has been doing a great job. She is playing classical music on violin in school and in YOSAC (Youth Orchestra of Southern Alameda County). On piano she is learning to play the blues and jazz, as well as learning theory and composition. Both of my children have been able to successfully participate in the LaHonda Summer Music Camp. We have had a great experience with Maureen throughout the past 5 years and have enjoyed seeing her each week."

5 Maintenance Tips for Violin Bows

All musical instruments require attention and maintenance. When it comes to the violin, however, it is easy to forget that the bow needs as much care as the instrument itself. After all, the way you treat your violin bows will affect the way the violin sounds. If too much resin builds up on the hairs, for example, the sound will come out wrong. While it may not be as costly to repair or replace violin bows, why waste money when it’s easy to keep your violin bows in good working condition? …
