Guitar is my number one specialty—particularly classic rock, alternative rock, and popular styles, with a strength in bluesy solo technique. I have a modern teaching style, and I am very up to date with current music trends. I tend to focus on practical and transferable music skills—you know, the things that allow you to play with other musicians, learn new instruments, and be truly creative on the guitar! I am very adept in subjects related to real world music knowledge and application, such as songwriting, music theory, music recording, and music performance. Whether you're a hobbyist wanting to strum your way through folk classics, or a future musician looking to write songs and start a band, I have a way to make you love playing the guitar!

About Derek
My name is Derek, and I am a musician and music instructor based in Tempe, AZ. I have played music for nearly 25 years, during which time I've coached a diverse range of students, played hundreds of shows locally and regionally with several musical acts, and participated in dozens of recording projects as a session musician, producer, and songwriter. I strive to create a fun, relaxed learning environment, and students often commend me on my patience and positivity.

Many of my students have gone on to join signed bands, embark on national tours, jam at open mic nights, or simply master a few songs to play on the back porch with good friends and family. I believe I can teach anyone, and that there's always a way to reduce the complexity of learning. I aim to keep all lessons practical because I want to help people become musicians. Absol
ute beginners to advanced players welcome.

I'm flexible with musical styles, and I love how eclectic my students' musical tastes are. Whether it's rock, pop, indie, folk, country, jazz, or blues, one thing is true—a great song transcends genre. That's why I love to teach music theory and the building blocks of a song, including melody, harmony, rhythm, chord progressions, and chord structure. These skills give students the ability to learn their favorite songs in minutes, as well as write their own music.

I know how tough it can be to find the right teacher, so go ahead—check out the subjects I teach! Also, be sure to skim through the reviews that my students have left me, as I'm quite proud of them. If you have any questions, send me a message by clicking the "Ask Derek a Question" button above.

Now let's get started!

Derek was amazing! In the first lesson I learned more then I have in months with others. I felt he really took the time to understand where I was, and what would help me most. I didn't feel rushed and the way he explained concepts was amazing.

He is obviously a talented musician but has the ability to take that knowledge and make it accessible and understandable.

I would highly recommend Derek for any level of guitar player.

I teach the basics of learning acoustic guitar technique including: Selecting an appropriate guitar for the student, correct holding of the guitar, finger and hand placement, guitar notes and scales, guitar tablature, reading and playing guitar chords, strumming and picking, playing guitar songs from most genres and music theory. I also teach electric bass guitar and ukulele, beginner through intermediate. I teach guitar in most genres of music (except hip-hop and rap). I have been playing acoustic guitar since I was 10 years old, and have a great deal of experience in playing most genres and techniques, I am used to accompanying groups of people in different settings on the guitar. I learned to play ukulele as one of my first instruments. I learned to play electric bass guitar in stage band and in a rock group in high school. I love the guitar and it is one of my favorite instruments because of its versatility.

About Karen
Karen R. was born and raised in a musical family in Lindstrom, Minnesota. Karen has loved to sing and play instruments almost all of her life, and became passionate about music early in her childhood. She has played 7 instruments proficiently including piano, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, ukulele, trombone, recorder, and voice (also an instrument). As a child, Karen took private instruction in piano and classical guitar. She sang and played guitar in her first band in the fifth grade! In high school she played trombone in band, bass guitar in stage band, and sang in the high school choir and stage chorus. In high school, she also sang and played acoustic and bass guitar in a rock band called the 6 pack, who performed for school dances and community events. Karen was also the singer and guitarist, leading the Young Life group. Even though
Karen has had training in many instruments, she has had the most training in voice.

As an adult, Karen has sung extensively in church choirs, women's ensembles, and has been a featured vocal soloist at church services, Christian retreats, and women's ministry events. She was extensively involved in vocal music at Grace Community Christian Church, where she was the singer and guitarist leading and teaching songs to women Bible study groups, preschoolers at vacation Bible school, and Kids Praise Club for elementary aged children. For Kids Praise Club, she also taught the children the choreography for the performances. Presently, Karen is a Choir Director for the K-6 Choristers group at First Presbyterian Church (FPC) in Mesa, AZ., and also taught singing and choreography to the children at VBS at FPC. Karen also had a main roles as Mrs. Paroo in The Music Man in April of 2013, and Mrs. Bucket in Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in April, 2014, The Jailer's Daughter in Wind in the Willows, and Mrs. Brill in Mary Poppins, Mrs. Darling and a Pirate in Peter Pan, performed by the First Players at FPC. Additionally. Karen is presently a substitute elementary school and music teacher at Grace Christian Academy, Bethany Christian School, and teaches General Music K-12 at Young Disciples Christian Academy part-time.

During Karen's college career, she was a voice major at Mesa Community College (MCC) and Grand Canyon University (GCU). At MCC, she performed in the Sun Valley Chorale (SVC) and Cadence women vocal jazz ensemble. SVC performed classical songs at the Mesa Arts Center, and Cadence performed jazz songs for MCC events. Karen was also involved in musical theater at MCC. Karen was an opera singer at Night at the Opera, and a Broadway singer at Broadway Bound, both at MCC. At GCU, Karen has been in the President Singers, Canyon Singers, Canyon Chorale, and Union Choirs. Canyon Singers were the honor students and ambassadors for GCU who traveled locally and out of state to recruit students for GCU. As a voice major, Karen has had 9 semesters (4 ½ years) of private voice instruction under the tuteladge of Dr. Cathy Hauan at MCC, and Dr. Sheila Corley at GCU. Karen has three degrees from GCU: A Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a Minor in Music, a Master's of Education in Reading and Curriculum, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. Music is Karens passion and she desires to teach it to all ages and stages of people. Music is the universal language and creates joy and healing in the soul.

Presently, Karen owns her own home music studio called Starshine School of Music in which she teaches piano, voice, and guitar. Karen also teaches Take Lessons music students (an online music student placement company) piano, voice, and guitar in her home. Karen is also an active Mary Kay Consultant.

*** Lesson Details ***
Karen's teaching style is very patient, nurturing, encouraging, and fun-loving. Karen is a teacher who sets loving but firm boundaries and guidelines. She implements structure and organization, but is not overly strict and harsh. She believes in encouraging, loving, and imparting knowledge with her students so that they will maximize their potentiality and their inner musical stars will shine.
Karen teaches piano, voice, guitar, and music theory for beginning through intermediate (for voice she teaches beginning through advanced). The curriculum that Karen uses is varied according to the student's personality and learning level. She uses her vast knowledge and information from her education and past experiences, and also Alfred Essentials of Music Theory, Alfred's Instructional books, Hal Leonard Pro-vocal Series, Faber Piano Adventures for all levels, and other resources. She also uses an assignment lesson plan book so that each student will know her clear objectives, what is expected of them and so that communication is established with the student's parents if the student is under 18. Additionally, Karen uses incentives, a point system, and rewards for self-discipline, consistent practicing, musical accomplishment and growth, and a good attitude.
Karen's students learn and perform remarkably well because of her very loving, organized, and comprehensive teaching style. They progress in amazing ways on a weekly and monthly basis. They look forward to coming to their lessons because they are treated with such respect and care. They know that Karen has such a passion and love for music, which is so contagious and is passed on to them. Therefore, these music lessons are enjoyable and enriching for the teacher and student alike.

Build a foundation of techniques to be able to play riffs, scales, chords and songs as quickly as possible. Build strength and dexterity through different patterns and have an overall understanding of how the instrument works and how to be creative with it.

About Aaron
Teaching drums professionally since 1998, Aaron has influenced hundreds of budding musicians to get the most from their instrument. He has studied privately with Rob Laytham (Modern Drummer columnist), Joe Leroux (marching band guru), Gary Chaffe (legendary drummer) and many others throughout the years. He has taken the best techniques and teaching styles from his influences and molded them together to form what he considers to be the most effective and inspiring method available.

I teach drum set in nearly every style and hybrid imaginable, as well as percussion and drum circle facilitation.

Accomplishments include recording 7 albums with various groups, touring with national acts across the west coast, drumming for the Warner Brothers Television house band, and still actively playing live shows and recording.

*** Lesson Deta
ils ***
I put my focus on inspiring students to explore their own creativity with the tools and techniques that I give to them and nurture. I think it is very important to cover the basic skills that the school districts expect from their music students (sight reading, proper technique, note recognition, rudiments, timing, feel, etc.). I also feel it is important for a student to find his or her style and an ability to use the fundamentals to create music that they enjoy. He has written a method book based on the fundamentals of playing a rhythmic instrument with an emphasis on allowing the student to find their niche and lead a group through a piece of music or tastefully support it.

My studios are fully equipped with sound systems, the latest recording gear, acoustic and electric sets, hand drums and dozens of other percussion instruments. I believe that the more resources a person can draw from, be it intellectual or physical, the more fulfilling the learning experience will be.

Each lesson, my students will take at least a page of music that represents the concept that they are focusing on, and a goal set to accomplish by the end of the week so that they can build upon what they already know in an effort to put the big picture together. Ultimately the student will learn when and how to utilize the concepts that they are practicing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
A Yamaha electronic drum set in my Mesa Studio allows me to control volume and dial up any sound imaginable. I have full acoustic drum sets in other studios that I use for recording and private lessons. Often I will integrate guitar, keyboard, or other instruments in to the lessons if needed.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Sticks, Practice Pad, tuning kit, binder and books with teaching supplements.

*** Specialties ***
Music, Drums, Percussion, Theory, Composition, Piano and Guitar.
Drummers should be well versed in all genres of music. Rock, Jazz, Latin, Swing, etc.
Most of my students begin with concert and marching styles on a practice pad, then advance to the drum set.
I teach note recognition and placement, rudiments, linear playing, moeller method, rhythm theory, sub-division of notes and time, and the sight-reading to support these techniques.

Whether you've just started out or you want to take that next step to becoming a better guitarist, I'm here to help!

About Andrew
My name is Andrew, and I've been a musician nearly my entire life. I have a Bachelor's degree in classical guitar performance from Arizona State University, but my background goes far beyond classical music. My performance experiences range from playing violin in my high school symphony orchestra to playing lead guitar in a Santana cover band, and just about everything in between! As a teacher, you can expect me to be positive and encouraging. My biggest goal is to inspire you and help you discover a similar passion for music as I've developed over the years.

*** Lesson Details ***
While I do expect students to practice consistently, I always do my best to tailor the lesson plans to their wants as well as their needs so practice is both fun and challenging. For students pursuing classical music, I'll typically start them in a book an
d reading sheet music, but for just about anything else, the lesson plans will be more customized to the taste of my students and will not require music reading ability in most cases. After the first few months, my students can expect to have a solid understanding of music, their instrument, and what steps to take to reach their long term goals.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I travel with my own guitar and bass guitar, but for piano and drum lessons, the student will need their own instrument and a quiet area to get the most from the lessons.

*** Specialties ***
While I have a degree in classical guitar, I have several years of experience with blues and classic rock, specifically on the electric guitar and drums. Aside from those, I enjoy all genres of music and have plenty of musical experience outside of the aforementioned genres.

Hello, my name is William. Thank you for taking the time to read about what I have to offer you. Are you interested in learning to play the music you love, using techniques that are actually healthy for your hands?

My instruction involves healthy, ergonomically sound, efficient, time-tested playing techniques combined with customized lesson plans, including original instructional materials, established texts, theoretical education, and material chosen by the student.

I offer training for acoustic as well as electric (steel and/or nylon string) instruments and provide instruction in popular music styles as well as formal classical.

Quality practice coaching will make a profound difference in your ability to learn and play music effectively, but it takes time. That's why I offer full hour lessons at a reasonable price ($49). Practice well and you will play well.

About me: I earned my Degree in Music Education from Shenandoah Conservatory where I studied Classical ...

About William
I am a professional guitar instructor. I earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and graduated with High Honors. My formal training includes classical guitar performance, jazz guitar and improvisation, music theory and arranging, psychology, piano, violin, recording, and much more.

With over 25 years of teaching experience and well over 30 years of experience playing music, I have enjoyed working with students as well as other musicians with broadly diverse backgrounds. I have performed solo, played in rock bands, blues and jazz combos, duos, trios, and classical guitar quartets as well as large guitar ensembles.

Students currently studying with me include young through older adult and retirement age students with performance goals ranging from the private, personal enjoyment of playing music, to professional and semi-profess
ional aspirations.

I strive to provide a friendly, comfortable learning environment my students can thrive in. I won't pressure you to play in recitals in order to increase my studio size, but I will greatly encourage you to play an active role in customizing your own individual curriculum. As soon as you have the skills to do so, you should be learning to play the music you love.

Regardless of what your musical goals are, I would love to help you learn the skills you need to reach them. Thank you so much for your time.

I've been a self taught student via the internet for a year and a half and I recently moved to Phoenix and decided to take a stab at taking lessons. I've been taking lessons with William for one month and I can honestly say, I've learn more in my first lesson then I've learned the year and half I've been playing on my own. I was blown away with his patience, knowledge, and passion for teaching guitar.

William is definitely worth more then what take lesson charges. His lessons has super exceeded by expectation. I highly recommend taking lessons with him, there so much information he teaches regarding reading music, the proper way to hold the guitar, proper technique, learning scales, the proper way to hold a pick and proper equipment selection base on your style.

I can go on and on, but the bottom line is choosing William as a teacher will be an investment with your guitar playing and I promise you will not be disappointed.

I've taken lessons from William for several years. He helped me choose several of my guitars and worked with me on my acoustic, classical and electric guitars. His knowledge is extensive as guitars are his life. I've had other guitar instructors who teach to make money, or on the side. William on the other hand, teaches because he lives guitar, it's his passion.

William is exceptional with many of the technical aspects that improved my playing efficiency and increased my safety on the guitar. You might ask, "What do I mean by safety?" He taught me how to hold my guitar and reinforces playing it in a manner that reduces the potential for injuries and allows me to play for longer periods of time without getting tired. That's very important if you love the guitar!

No matter what style of playing I'm interested in, William has been excellent in showing me how to achieve the sound I'm looking for. If I want to play a particular song and he doesn't know it, all I have to do is play it on I-Tunes for him. He immediately shows me how to play the song, or adapt it to my level so that I can.

William is a patient and enthusiastic teacher that encourages and challenges me to continue to improve. That's why I continue to take lessons from him and recommend him to anyone who is serious about learning to play.
Cheers,

I chose to take up the guitar later in life (after retirement). I did not read music nor did I feel that I had any rhythm. William was extremely patient with me and brought me to levels that far exceeded my expectations. William has a rare ability to be able to put a person at ease and reduce their tension level. Sometimes it was through playing and sometimes through playing. He was able to read my apprehension level very well and seemed to always choose the correct method. I moved away from the area and thus far have not found a guitar teacher with the same abilities. Regardless of age or ability, I would recommend William to anyone. Were it not so expensive I would gladly fly back to Phoenix once a week to continue my lessons with William.

I approach each student differently. Every musician and person is unique. That being said I believe everyone learns differently. I make learning guitar fun by focusing on music that my
Students are passionate about. I discover where their strengths are and build on them
for confidence as I continue to include exercises that build on skills my students are having difficulty with, without them even knowing. I beleive teaching music deserves a custom approach. I also truly believe if your not having fun playing music, you're not going to get better. I teach with the balance of fun and strengthening weaknesses. Theory, chord transitions and shaping are my focal points.

About Chad
I have been a professional recording artist song writer since I left my job as an electrical engineer for the FAA 3 years ago. My specialty is songwriting. I think everyone has at least one good song in them. When it comes to learning our musical crafts, I truly believe a good environment with good people all having a good time is the best fundamental approach! I do not believe there is one certain way to learn things. That is why I (like many others) will learn certain subject easier using custom approaches. The three most important areas to start in are the EM Ionian, the c-a-g-e-d system, and the minor pentatonic. Beginning with these fundamentals will help YOU, the growing guitarist to understand why what your playing works.
