About Pete A.
Close
The guitar is my primary instrument, and I've been playing for close to 20 years now. I've studied with some incredible teachers (Tomo Fujita, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny, Dave Fiuzcynski, Don Glanden, Kevin Hanson) who have taught some incredible students (like John Mayer, Eric Krasno, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and B.B. King), and I aim to pass down that same valuable information to my students. I teach all areas of guitar and I specialize in jazz and blues. As a student, I experienced several different music education curriculums, and I'm highly focused on adapting my teaching style to best suit each individual student. Unlike a lot of private teachers and music stores, I teach the essentials of whatever route students want to take, whether it be intense studying and preparation for music school auditions or just learning the basics and being able to play your favorite songs. If you have any questions about anything at all, feel free to get in touch with me.
About Pete
In 2011, I successfully obtained my master's degree in Jazz Studies from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. The master's program was an intense submersion in music performance that shaped me into the musician that I am today. I was lucky to study with Don Glanden, Mike Kennedy, and Kevin Hanson.
I am also well versed in computer recording software and DAWs. I teach students how to use software programs such as Logic and Reason as well as notation software like Sibelius and Finale. With some basic training in these programs, I can teach a student how to effectively record and produce professional quality recordings so that a student can write, record, and produce their own music.
*** Lesson Details ***
Because I've studied with some legendary teachers who have taught some legendary students (like John Mayer), I'm able to pass on to my students the same knowledge that these incredible teachers passed on to me. I guarantee that I will be unlike any guitar teacher that you've had before. Along with instrumental training, I offer extensive lessons in music theory and ear training. My family is full of educators and I've experienced the teacher-student relationship from a young age. I am fully committed to developing lesson plans based on the route that a student wants to take, whether it's just learning the basics and playing along to your favorite songs or engaging in serious study and preparing for college auditions. I am available to teach at any location within the Philadelphia area.
*** Stylistic Focus ***
I specialize in jazz and blues. At Berklee, I was able to take instrumental labs that spent an entire semester focusing on the playing style of certain guitarists. I've taken the Wes Montgomery lab, the Pat Martino lab, the Jimi Hendrix lab, the John Scofield lab, and the Stevie Ray Vaughan lab.

About John S.
Close
I can teach beginning guitar students how to play their favorite songs. Also, how to read tabs and chord charts. Advanced students can learn theory and jazz improvisation. I can help students who have been using a capo learn how to play bar chords so you will no longer need a capo.
Guitar students should be at least nine years old.
I do not teach finger picking style.
About John
One of my main specialties is working with very young students and total beginners. There is a special skill to teaching young children that can only be developed through experience. For the older student, or the student who already has a musical background my specialty is helping you learn the styles that have always been of most interest to you. I can also help older students gain a broad understanding of music through some basic music theory.
**
I can teach piano or keyboard to beginners and up to advanced students. On guitar and woodwinds I can teach beginners and up to intermediate level students.
My teaching style is fairly relaxed and very positive, but I will try to keep the lessons on a course that is going to benefit you the most.
For younger piano students and beginners I prefer the Alfreds piano system. The songs in the Alfreds books allow for immediate playing and note reading without any tedious memorization. The beginner books contain a lot of fun songs that kids really gravitate toward. For older students I try to gear the lessons toward whatever musical style you prefer. For students who have only had traditional piano lessons I can teach you how to read pop and jazz chord charts, as well as how to turn those chord charts into fully arranged music. I can also teach improvisation and the skills that are required to play specific styles of music in a professional band.
For my younger guitar students I have a variety of beginner material I have collected over the years, but for my older students I prefer to work on songs of their choice.
My beginner woodwind students will work with a Yamaha method book, while older students can learn improvisation and theory if they like.
I also can lead Orff styled tuned percussion ensembles. The Orff style of music performance allows for students from entirely mis-matched musical backgrounds to play music together, even on their first day of class.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Professional digital piano, many other keyboards, guitar, bass guitar, saxophone, flute, and four Orff tuned percussion instruments. I also have a comfortable seating area for parents, guests or observers.
*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide multiple keyboards, a guitar, saxophone, flute and 4 Orff style tuned percussion instruments, as well as countless books and literature.
*** Specialties ***
I play keyboards professionally in jazz, RnB, rock, reggae, Latin rock and other styles. I can help the student who has only had traditional lessons branch out and learn how to read chord charts, which in turn teaches them theory.
I am a certified Orff teacher as well.

I've been playing guitar for 30 years. I have been an active songwriter/performer for 20 years. I teach in plain English and get results quickly. Basics, fundamentals and even advanced theory is great but if you don't feel musical you aren't having fun and why else would anyone do this? More than anything else learning and playing guitar should be fun.
