About John

I have an associates degree in music and I have been teaching lessons for 10 years now. I also have experience as a substitute teacher. As a substitute, I have taught all grades, all subjects, and I have helped out many kinds of students each with their own way of learning.

Besides teaching, I love learning too. Anytime I have a question I immediately start seeking out the answer. Learning never stops!

*** Lesson Details ***
Ever wondered how musicians write music? Why do they make the choices they make? Why do those choices work? Why does music work the way that it does? I can answer all these questions and much more.

With me as your guide, I will unlock your musical superpowers and make you capable of things you didn't know were possible. I have many different methods for teaching not only technique, but how to listen, and ho

w to think creatively so that you can unlock your full potential.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide my guitar, picks, and tuner and that's really all you will need as well.

I'll occasionally bring my laptop with me to use some music software to assist in my lessons.

I'll always have pens and paper so I can make notes or diagrams if needed. I highly recommend that my students have a spiral notebook so I can more easily cater to them.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in many musical genres including rock, ska, punk, progressive, jazz, folk, and more. Music theory is a big part of what I do as it's the universal language of music. If you learn enough theory, you can learn ANY instrument.

Private Music Theory Teacher

music theory is covered in the most subtle ways and more in depth when needed. How to build a chord, invert it and play, understanding major and minor keys

About Charis

I have a B.S. in Music Education. I have worked with several disabled students patiently guiding them, finding creative ways to make music accessible to them. I believe it is not about me or the parent, but the student. I work with children of all ages believing that we can find a way that works so that in a few months you see results. Anyone can learn to sing or play but not everyone is going to enjoy it without the right approach and teacher. I don't want to hear a student say that the teacher didn't listen to me, they wouldn't entertain my ideas.
In my studio I have a studio piano and a keyboard. We have monitors and microphones and the ability to record. I encourage the composer to the pop music player, from the classical artist to the Broadway singer.
Currently, I have several students that compose their own music, helpi

ng one of those students to become a copyrighted artist.

*** Lesson Details ***
For the child I have had the most success with the Bastien method and for the Adult pianist I usually use Alfred's method books. I constantly have access to musicnotes.com to download any current or older hit in addition to the method books. I want you to learn to note read and then to play by chords. I never want the student to lose their creative, artistic ability. They should feel welcome at all times to add input to the lesson. I want you to have fun learning and find the ability in you to make music. Please contact Takelessons if a time does not suit your availability. I may be able to work something out.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I own my music studio w/ piano, seating for parents. I have vocal equipment, microphones and monitors

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will have a music bingo game with me and whatever else is needed to supplement the lesson

*** Specialties ***
I teach any style and method that is needed, but prefer Bastien, feeling it doesn't drag the information out. I teach note reading and playing classical music to playing by chords and learning how to split the voicing

Private Music Theory Teacher

I have been teaching Theory as part of the lessons for over 23 years.
Theory is the analysis of what is behind the music.
I always include Theory in the lessons to help the students understand their music.

About Teresa

I am a graduate of Northern IL University with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. I have 22 years of teaching experience where I have traveled to the homes. Students enjoy my passion that I have with the instrument.

I started teaching in 1991 and have been teaching several students since then. Attending teacher workshops keep me at a current updated level and I want to help the students learn to the best of their potential.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very thorough in my teaching, which includes lesson, theory, technique, and performance
methods. I use a very easy, flexible approach when it comes to the kids and their personalities. I expect a lot out of my students, yet still want them to learn and have fun.
After three months with me, they will have learned how my teaching style is and will be able to play several

children's songs.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I don't provide any equipment when I travel except their books for the first lesson. I would expect the student to have a well tuned piano or a basic keyboard. The student also needs a notebook so I can write their homework down for them as well as myself to keep track of where the student is in their progress.[

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching Alfred, Bastien, and Faber and Faber. I teach General Music, Classical, Jazz, and Popular. I teach mainly through the method books, and then use other supplementary materials as well..

My daughters had their first piano lesson today with Terri. I can honestly say that I’ve never met anyone so patient and sweet natured and professional like Terri. The first time I spoke to her on the phone reflected her nature in person. Shes very knowledgeable with the piano music. She knows how to level herself with my 7 year old and specially with my know it all 5 year old. After the lessons she updated me with their progress and commented on my kids strengths and weaknesses. She just didn’t talk to me as her client but she talked to me like a friend. Her smile radiated through the music she teaches. We all loved her.

Music theory is the basic foundation for every good composer and songwriter. There's a lot to learn and a lot that can be used in your own music. Even if you only want to play guitar and not write music, music theory can help you be a better improvisor, increase your harmonic knowledge, and play better in group settings.

About Jeremie

I'm a self taught guitarist who has been playing for nearly 20 years. I have played professionally in numerous bands and ensembles ranging from jazz to folk to rock, and I've been writing music for the same length of time. I currently perform with one of my students from TakeLessons named Mackenzie O'Brien.

I graduated from Columbia College Chicago in May 2014 with a BA in Music Composition. I studied under composers: Drew Baker, Kenn Kumpf, Ilya Levinson, and Marcos Balter. I've performed and worked with members from the groups, Del Niente and Chicago's Composer's Collective.

I build my lesson plans around each of my students based on their interests. I'll try to incorporate music they enjoy into their music regime. I keep lessons pretty relaxed, but will challenge a student who is looking for something m

ore difficult. I go at the pace you learn best at!

Bass guitar, ukulele, song-writing, counterpoint, orchestrating, arranging, music theory, and composing are subjects I'm well versed in and love to teach to other people.

I'm experienced with all kinds of music software, such as: Pro Tools, Logic, Garage Band, Cubase, FL Studio, Finale, Sibelius. If you want to learn how to write, record, mix, and master your own music, there's never been a better time to learn.

Want to take your music to the next level? Can't quite figure out why that band's chords sound so hip? Confused on how to write for an orchestra? Composition lessons with me can solve all of these problems! We'll create a curriculum uniquely tailored to your goals, covering subjects including harmony, voicings, melody, and orchestration, and focusing on the musical styles you're most interested in. Weekly assignments and personal interaction will ensure that your writing skills can only get better!

About Thomas

Piano, woodwinds, trumpet, composition
Chords, sight-reading, theory, jazz, classical, and pop

No one ever regrets learning an instrument… yet many grow old wishing they had taken music lessons! A talent they’ll be able to develop their entire life, your children will thank you for giving them the chance to learn music. And bonus points for you: after just a couple years, you’ll have free entertainment every Christmas!

Or maybe YOU’RE the one that wishes to learn! It is never too late to begin learning an instrument. Everybody has the ability, and if you’re determined and interested, there’s nothing stopping us from achieving this very special goal. (Interested in learning to compose? Scroll to the bottom to learn more.)

Everybody learns differently, and everybody likes different things. Whether it’s improvising or singing alon

gside a song you love or reading through a classical concerto, I’ll help prepare you or your child to tackle a wide variety of styles, without missing out on any of the basics that turn good players into phenomenal musicians. We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun. Music lessons include:

1. Building a really strong foundation so it's easy to interpret or understand any part, and to play it with the right amount of practice.

2. Learning to sight-read music, so you can play it well as soon as possible.

3. Learning how to improvise (make-up) music, learn music by ear, and to understand and create chords, which lets you play music in different ways.

4. Play different styles from classical to jazz to popular music.

5. Learning how to practice efficiently so you can learn music as fast as possible.

6. Composing our own original music.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.

It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.

Learning an instrument is one of those few skills that will genuinely last you your whole life. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it.

Now get out there and make some music! But start by signing up for lessons. I can’t wait to get started!

---

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.

Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. Step by step, we’ll work our way there.

We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!

The first lesson was successful. My particular background in piano is unique, and my needs are atypical as well. I thought Thomas assessed my abilities, lack of abilities, and goals well and quickly. He started me on a different perspective on looking at music (reading the staff) that seems very helpful. I'm encouraged.

Music Theory can be taught within an instrumental lesson (voice and piano) or in a lesson by itself. I LOVE music theory, and if you've never liked it or been able to grasp it before, it's time to change that! Beginners will master fundamentals such as note-reading, keys, time-signature, rhythms, intervals, scales, chords, and harmonic progressions. Intermediate to Advanced students will build on these skills and learn part-writing and score analysis (both tonal and atonal). Private lessons are an excellent compliment to music theory classes taught in schools, especially for any student who needs outside tutoring.

I am a composer with a Master of Music in music theory and composition from New York University.

About Natalie

Natalie is a NYU and BMI Workshop trained composer of songs, musicals, and concert music who has helped many songwriters find their voice and fine-tune their skills. She is particularly adept at identifying what is keeping a song from working (whether it be music, lyrics or both) and helping writers get to the heart of what they want to say.

Natalie's work has been heard in New York at Lincoln Center, 54 Below, The Duplex, Laurie Beechman Theatre, The Flea Theatre, and Greenwhich Music House, as well as in San Diego, LA, and Nashville. She wrote the music, book and lyrics to Home/Front which was produced in 2014 to sold-out audiences. It was a semi-finalist in the New York New Work Festival in 2016 and in currently in development for a U.S. base tour.

Other musicals include: Across a Wire (reading 356 Studios, New York, NY), Hall

Pass ("Flyers and Fryers," Rancho Bueno Visto High, produced by Blake McCarthy), The Big C (songs, Dramatists Guild), "Performance Anxiety" (music/lyrics, The Flea Theatre, Raw Impressions Musical Theatre Marathon), andThe Music of Natalie Lovejoy (The Duplex). She is listed in The Directory of Contemporary Musical Theatre Writers at Contemporary Musical Theater.

Natalie holds a Masters in Music Composition and Theory from New York University where she studied songwriter and concert composition with Dr. Steven Rosenhaus. Natalie is an alumnus of the famed BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop in New York whose other alumni include Alan Menken, Robert Lopez (Avenue Q, Frozen), Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home), Tom Kitt (next to normal), and Flaherty & Ahrens (Ragtime). She also studied songwriting through the Johnny Mercer Workshop at Northwestern University with Craig Carnelia, and Andrew Lippa, Nashville songwriter Lari White, and Amanda McBroom ("The Rose").

Natalie loves working with composers and songwriters of all ages and ability levels. Please click on individual lessons to learn more.

"I took composition lessons with Natalie and looking back on my work before starting with her, it was scattered, lacked structure, needed honing. She is already a crazy talented composer herself and it translates to her teaching. Natalie is really great at asking the right questions. Why did you write this? What are you trying to say with this piece? What feeling are you trying to tap into with those chords? I can attest to writing with much more confidence and just as important, REWRITING with much more confidence. If the song doesn't work she will let you know but subsequently, she will let you know what DOES work and what to build on. Very supportive, as well as very critical, in the best possible way. It means she cares about the work you're creating. So much so that after running several rounds of rewrites by her, I completely trust the product I am putting out there. I will continue to come back to Natalie to hone my craft." -- Tristan S, composition student, New York, NY

About Hannah

After studying piano for almost 10 years I decided I wanted to learn a new instrument and began taking violin lessons when I was 16 years old. In spite of people telling me that I was “too old” to learn to play the violin, I continued practicing and one year later I joined my first orchestra. In 2016 I graduated with a BA in Music from the University of Massachusetts Boston and I am now the violinist of Boston-based fusion rock band " The Sunset Kings".
In November of 2018, I released my Spanish debut single "Ni Una Más" under my artist name "Hannah Schzde". "Ni Una Más" is now available in every music streaming service world-wide!
In addition to offering private violin and piano lessons and performing with The Sunset Kings, I am also a studio violinist and perform with different orchestra pits in the Boston area while I continue to wri

te and record new material for my upcoming debut EP.
***Note: My availability is flexible! Please send me a message if my calendar doesn't fit with your schedule and we'll work it out!***

"Shon Morgan is absolutely the greatest most talented musician and music teacher I have ever had the privilege of learning from and playing music with. I
am a drummer/guitarist/vocalist. We did some touring gigs together in our earlier years and he was already amazing back then. He sat down and taught me the circle of fifths off the top of his head in one conversation. I learned so much just playing along side him. So not only is he an amazing player, but he is also very well suited and experienced as a teacher. He is the most knowledgeable musically but patient and kind personally. He plays and teaches multiple instruments and vocals really well but he stands out tremendously on bass guitar! You can not go wrong having Shon Morgan as your teacher, period!"
