I specialize in contemporary music theory and also have an intermediate knowledge of classical theory. Students will learn the basics such as roman numerals for chords, all the way to advanced concepts such as chord scales, modulation and chord substitution. Unless otherwise requested, all lessons will be taught using music notation.

About Sam

Hi! I'm a recent graduate of Berklee College of music where I majored in professional music. This included music theory and guitar instruction, as well as reading and writing music notation and charts in different styles. I also play frequently, including shows at The 9:30 Club, The Howard Theater

Sam is great! He is attentive and great with my 9 yo. He is also flexible and easy to schedule. We plan to continue in-home guitar lessons with him for a foreseeable future.

Terrible experience. I bought a package of 20 lessons for my 9yo nephew. He looked forward to it ever day from Xmas to the first week of January. Sam canceled the first lesson only 2hours prior its beginning. Then canceled the second lesson 10 minutes before he was supposed to be there because he “forgot” he had a “recording session today”. During the only lesson my nephew had, Sam didn’t show any ability to tailor a lesson to a child. Instead he gave him a pick, which dismayed me, and taught him a rock song we never heard of.
When I contacted the company they were very nice about it but I had to challenge their vetting process of teachers.
Dara
It was an excellent lesson! I really learned a lot from it. I was able to learn one song and start on a second on my first lesson only! Definitely recommend Sam to anyone thinking about picking up the guitar!

Since high school, music theory has always interested me. For my students this means theory will almost always be included in a lesson, not just to know it, but to know why and how it influences the notes we play. Due to my college experience, most of my theory knowledge has a jazz tinge to it, so some terminology might vary between that and classical language. Regardless, if you're looking to learn how to use a Babbitonian Matrix, or where to apply a Hexatonic scale, or even just want to know what notes make up a chord, we can definitely discuss it and have a good time doing it.

About Tommy

My name is Tommy. I've been playing bass and guitar since I was 11 years old. When I was in high school, I won my school's Duke Ellington Jazz Performance Award my junior year. Around this time I began to work at my neighborhood's local lesson shop Let's Play Music! off of W Broad Street in Falls C

I teach some music theory as part of the ongoing lessons to almost all students but I encourage those who are interested to study the subject more thoroughly. I use the book 'GETTING MUSIC' which I co-authored (published in 2014) as the textbook for theory study as it provides a strong grounding and understanding of notation, scale construction, interval construction, chord construction and an overview of basic harmony principles and practices.

About Dennis

I have been teaching guitar for 25 years in the Washington DC metro area. I work with students 12 years of age and up, but I am especially experienced at teaching adult students regardless of whether they are beginners or have previous guitar experience. I have performed in acoustic Celtic, new age

Tom
Dennis has been a wonderful guitar teacher and mentor for me over the last 18 months or so. I am in my mid-50s and was starting essentially as a beginner when I signed up to work with Dennis. Thanks to Dennis' patient and individualized approach, I have made great strides and am pleased with how I have progressed. While he is a very accomplished guitarist, he is also a very experienced teacher. Dennis' teaching approach is not to ask the student to follow a rigid learning plan or replicate the journey he took to mastering the guitar, but rather focuses on tailoring the lessons to the student's abilities, musical interests, time constraints, learning modes, etc. The bottom line is that I enjoy working with Dennis each week and practicing what he has taught me.

The pandemic has obviously thrown a big wrench into the giving of guitar lessons. Before, Dennis was teaching me at his house. We now meet online using the Takelessons platform. Online lessons took some getting used to and are clearly not optimal, but I think Dennis has become more and more adept at making it work as well as possible.

I heartily recommend Dennis as a guitar teacher.

Dennis is easygoing and great to work with.

This was my first ever guitar lesson and I thought it was a blast. The instructor took the time to explain best practices and why they were so important. I also really enjoyed seeing the instructor's passion for the guitar and that passion made the whole experience even better!

Why You Should Learn (At Least a Little) Music Theory

One of the most common weaknesses for amateur musicians is a lack of music theory knowledge. Many people assume that learning theory is difficult (it isn’t) that it has no practical purpose (it does), or even that it will actively make them worse at making music (quite the opposite). I’m here to convince you that learning a little about how music works is one of the most important skills you can develop and should absolutely be part of your daily practice routine. Here are five reasons w …

Understanding Music Theory Through Colors

Struggling to understand a music theory concept? Sometimes, all it takes is a tweak to the way material is taught for a student to really grasp it. Here, Pittsburgh voice teacher Jennifer V. reveals her unique ROYGBIV method...   Has your child ever come home in tears because they just couldn’t master a skill they learned in school? You listen, wipe their tears and tell them “Tomorrow is a new day,” and “I know you can do it!” But the next day he or she comes home upset about th …

Music Student Face-Off: Memorizers vs. Readers | Which is Better?

As you learn songs and work through your music books, do you memorize the notes? Or do you read along every time you play? In this post, music teacher Vanessa G. discusses the pros and cons to the approaches...   Imagine your teacher gives you a piece of music to study. What's your process? Do you listen to a recording, memorizing the melody and the stylistic aspects before you begin, and then as you play? Or would you sit down and sight read the notes, and perfect it from that star …
